Description
From Yen Press:

When Roman architect Lucius is criticized for his "outdated" thermae designs, he retreats to the local bath to collect his thoughts. All Lucius wants is to recapture the Rome of earlier days, when one could enjoy a relaxing bath without the pressure of merchants and roughhousing patrons. Slipping deeper into the warm water, Lucius is suddenly caught in the suction and dragged through the drainage at the bottom of the bath! He emerges coughing and sputtering amid a group of strange-looking foreigners with the most peculiar bathhouse customs...over 1,500 years in the future in modern-day Japan! His contemporaries wanted him to modernize, and so, borrowing the customs of these mysterious bath-loving people, Lucius opens what quickly becomes the most popular new bathhouse in Rome-Thermae Romae!

Note: Won the third Manga Taishō and the Short Story Award at the 14th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2010.

Hilarious but not for the average reader

Thermae Romae [literally Baths of Rome from the Latin] is, honestly, one of the most absurd and hilarious series I've ever read. However, a large number of people don't feel the same way, since there's been a lot of bad ratings and reviews on Thermae Romae lately...

I did a little research and found two things in common. Most people, not all, who didn't like Thermae Romae don't have extensive knowledge about Roman history. Sure, Yamazaki Mari gives an extensive historical lecture after each chapter, but people don't usually read those... Evidently if someone who has no idea what Roman baths are picks up Thermae Romae, they'll be thinking "wtf??" the whole time. But if you're someone who had a background on Roman baths in the past, you'll be saying "LMAO, I see what you did there to xxx concept!" throughout all the stories. I took Latin and Roman history before reading Thermae Romae and I found it hilarious.

The other thing with readers who didn't like Thermae Romae was that they don't know how to suspend their disbelief. This is a common thing that happens to comedy series. Yes, the premise of the story is stupid and corny as well as historically inaccurate about Lucius and the Japanese, but Yamazaki Mari knows what she's talking about. She did quite a bit of research on Roman baths. Other than the Lucius and the Japanese part, most everything else is historically accurate. She's spinning a new comedy on an old historical element. Since this is a comedy, so don't take the content too seriously. Have fun reading it! Don't over think!

Basically you can describe Thermae Romae as more of a comedy edu-manga type. If you don't want to learn about the subject [Roman Baths] or haven't had prior knowledge on it, you wouldn't like it. You would also need to suspend your disbelief. Thermae Romae is what many people like to call "stupid reader's manga" because you need to dumb yourself down to enjoy its full comedic quality. That means no over analyzing and no over thinking while reading this.

This and her Steve Jobs manga which is also reviewed need more love no question about that!
The realistic art is great, the setting is fully fleshed out and the idea itself is quite original too. It is also neat to see a manga about hot springs and nudity in general that isn´t a softcore porno. Better slice of life exists(usually from Fellows!) but the essence of the sub-genre is captured very well. I can certainly see where the recognition in japan came from. The research is also very impressive and the many editorials about japanese and roman culture are a very insightful. Overall a great read for culturally interested readers of all ages and genders.
