I absolutely love the gambling mangas by Fukumoto Nobuyuki, but this one was just bad. Initially I thought this was because it was essentially the first mahjong manga of the author, but that's not exactly the case: Ten's serialisation started one year prior and was much better.
My main issue was lack of realism - I did not expect that issue from this author.
The story features both assault and poisoning, and the protagonist, a middle schooler, doesn't even consider calling the police. What the hell?
And in terms of ability, Tenma is just an utterly unworthy protagonist in comparison to all the later mahjong manga, yet he's considered to be some sort of genius despite winning mostly due to luck, and always in the last round...

It's quite obvious how Fukumoto bagan his distinctive art style once you read this manga. It's more a collection of oneshots of 6 games of mahjong, but interesting none the less. There isn't as much twists, turns, and tragedies as his other mangas but of course it's only six chapters. It even gives a bit of background into how Tenma finds himself in such crazy situations.

Give if a go if you like his other mangas, it is definitelly worth it.
