Very rough

Lack of contrast in inking + lacking a clear transition between the scenes.

There are better manga that depict historical black music in a more engaging way. It's not enthralling, intense, and lack readability. The subject matter could have been portrayed in a more interesting way with proper pacing and panelling.

The author's later work pretty much resolved the issues but he also genre shifted.

Masterpiece of gorgeous drawing. The exquisite opening section of this manga leading up to the hero's embarkation is a tragedy of legendary caliber! The rest of the story makes some absolutely bugnuts left turns.

I think the pacing stumbles in the middle, and the magnificent scanlation - possibly the manga itself - has no ending (!), but these unfortunate quibbles by no means diminish the greatness of what it achieves. Maybe a bitter restlessness is more true to the subject than any tidy conclusion could ever be. Every fan of comics should check out Me and the Devil Blues. It is extremely bizarre that this heavyweight is so little-known.

A Real Blues Legend

Great in every sense of the word. The art is beautiful and has a realistic style. The devil is charming, offers real temptations, and leads people toward a sinful life. The characters are portrayed as real people with virtues and vices, faults and charms. This is by far the best manga I have read so far.

One of the best manga I have ever read, Devil Blues affect my opinion and judgement of manga with the same impact as Death Note. It is sadness that it was cancelled. I believe this manga have the possibility to success in the US, because the story is too foreign to today Japanese. I only wish that there might be a chance for this manga to continue. What an experience to have read this.

Supremely Exemplary

From the art, to the story-line, to the music, to the characters, to the setting, to the issues... everything about this manga screams "Amazing." The excitement of the story will entice the reader with every page and the depth of the characters will make even the most vapid reader empathize with RJ. Easily one of the greatest "fictional history" books I've ever read and easily contends for a spot along the other manga classics (which is astounding considering this amazing series got discontinued after a meager 4 volumes.) Definitely a must-read for any fan of manga.

This manga was so good, I mean the story is so original and no cliche I've ever heard of was there. It was an accurate portrayal of southern racism during the prohibition times and a great supernatural story. Whoever discontinued this needs to get shot

The only minus of this manga is that it's only 4 volumes. It's rare to find a manga where everything is portrayed with such mastery. It's even rarer to find a manga with such an art - maybe there are none? Anyway, every comment written about this manga can be summed up by "Read this". If you're wandering what's manga mastery - this is it.

It was refreshing to read something different from your usual manga.
I agree with all the other comments below. The only complaint I have is that it didn't really focus much on the music as I thought it would. In fact you didn't see much of it at all, except in the beginning.
Now, if this was completed, I would probably rate it higher, but unfortunately it won't.

Like the other commentators have said, its hard coming up with the right words to describe this manga while doing it justice. One way to put it is that it makes every other manga out there seem almost childish and amateurish when compared to this. This is a work of art to put it simply and should be read by anyone who considers themselves a fan of art. I have also never seen a Japanese mangaka create such realistic American dialogue, it amazes me at times while reading this, that this wasn't written by an American who lived during this time period.
