Description
Protagonists Ren and Rai fell prey to the Diabolo in an attempt to save the soul of Ren's cousin, 7-year-old Mio. Although they fail in their attempt, they were 'rewarded' with powers they would each gladly trade for the life of the young girl.

Just who - or what - is the Diabolo? What enticements does he offer the kids at school? And, if they accept his 'bargains,' what foul fate awaits them on their 18th birthdays?

Why the critical comments?

I wonder why this manga has so many disapproving comments. Is it because there's no romance? Or because the story is fast-paced and ends in epic tragedy?

My advice to you would be; ignore the low rating and the comments. This story is pretty well laid out, considering the limited number of volumes.
The plot-line moves at a rapid rate, and the characters' personalities are developed rather superficially; but somehow, that doesn't deaden the suspense at all - I'd have to say it actually made me all the more curious, and I read all three volumes in one sitting.
If you're the kind of person who has to have everything spelled out for them over the course of several (filler) chapters, and like reading character histories and flash-backs that are laid out in tiring, long-winded detail, you will definitely dislike Diabolo. However, if you enjoy figuring things out and tying up a couple of loose ends on your own, and if you have a good imagination, you are sure to like it.

The ending was dark and morbid; but therein lies the main draw for me in this series. It doesn't try to glorify or hide the cruelty and brutality of this world...instead throwing it in the readers' faces with each passing page. It is unusually realistic for a shoujo, and I approve of how Oohashi Kaoru doesn't shrink from showing us that selfishness and jealousy are a part of human nature...as well as the primary cause of our downfall.

The art is not bad at all. I wouldn't describe it as 'beautiful', but it is clear and precise - and each character is drawn with an individual flavour which made recognizing them quite easy (That is not a strong point of most manga, I can tell you!)

If you feel like reading an supernatural action-oriented manga which delves into the human psyche (albeit in a rather shallow fashion), try this!

The story is very gripping, but it's hard to figure out what's going on. The art is nice, but it doesn't flow well with the action. It's a constant fight just to keep up with where and what is happening.

Ok, so maybe the first volume doesn't spend 3 whole chapters introducing a single character and moves along at a swift, slightly confusing pace, but the story is there and all important points are addressed eventually. This could have done to stretch out for another volume maybe but I loved it just the same. The characters are fairly deep despite the shortness of manga and the artwork is amazing. The plot is so bittersweet and beautiful. The ending fits very well to the theme of the manga as well, I would class this as a tragedy though.

Pretty horrible plot...

Eh, while I admire Kusonagi Kei's ability in creating characters with varied personalities, she just isn't very good at maintaining a cohesive storyline. Though she's listed as the artist, I'm quite sure she probably had a hand in the story as well, since both the author and artist are sisters and they need to collaborate to create a storyline.

And I agree with Deva that the plot gets more and more illogical as it progresses. Actually, by the time I was halfway done with the story, I got so exasperated I dropped it.

Anyways, give this one a pass: the story is pretty shallow and compared to Madness(yaoi) which I read a while ago, the latter was far more entertaining and with better and more cohesive action scenes.

Read only if you don't mind looking at good art while suffering a storyline full of plot holes. I'm fairly sure there're far more similar series but with better entertainment value.

This manga is full of story holes and in the third volume it`s getting pretty illogical. The art is not bad but that`s the only good or special thing about it.It`s a pitty the first volume had some potential.

It must have been around...two years ago, I think, that I first read this series. It was the first series (or manga in itself) that I ever bought. Completely floored me. I loved the art, the theme, everything. It still sits there on my bookshelf, and I read it every now and again.
Ah, the memories.

Mh, probably the author meant "Diavolo" (Devil in Italian), but since v and b in Japanese have the same sound, they messed up. Nice. Too tiring to get a hold of a dictionary?
