Description
On the outskirts of Neo-Hong Kong lies a mysterious Chinese-style garden. Legend has it that anyone who looks upon the fairy of the garden will die before the night is out.

Five years ago, Douglas Pyke was charged with discovering the true nature of this fairy, but when he accidentally killed a woman in the line of duty, he left the police force forever. Now, a cabbie and sometime private eye, he is asked to find a missing scientist and confront the mysteries of the garden once more.

Pointless?

If I can't answer the question 'Why did the author decide to write this?' after finishing something, it generally indicates that it wasn't all that great. I'm not sure if it was trying to be overly artsy or something, but no point eventuated and no explanation of anything was given. Interesting idea, but undeveloped.

There's plenty of tough guy angst and a beautiful client for Our Hero, but Hyakka Teien is missing the sexism that is all too common in attempts at sci fi noir. This dame gives it an A++ for gorgeous art, compelling characters (despite the one-volume length!), and enough action to keep things moving. It's more of a philosophical series than an action one, but there are some stunning shots of gunplay in amongst the flowers, mist, and sweeping panoramas of 2020s Hong Kong.
