Good plot development. Meh art that gets better. Deaths lack impact/meaning.

TBH, I dropped Attack on Titan once. I didn't like it in the beginning. People died faster than I could properly recognize their characters, especially with the artwork. I expected the MC to grow stronger and kick ass, but that never happened. He was mostly just a raging ball of a fury, and I didn't really care for his feelings because the deaths happened so fast.

Then I watched the anime, which introduced the characters just enough for it to hit you in the gut when they die and accompanied it with great OST. This is probably one of the few series where I prefer the anime over the manga.

Then I continued onward with the manga, now with a fresh emotional attachment to characters. The deaths still feel emotionally lackluster in the manga, but I think the plot is very solid. Typically once a manga gets to the 'conspiracy revealed' phase, the series deteriorates really fast in terms of story. Plot elements become outlandish and unfit for what the original story was supposed to be about. The mangaka reeled it in right before it got to that point and connected it to rest of the story, so I appreciate it. Just in general, the story is very intact with all the politics and history.

I Like How Isayama Writes Tragedy...

...but not his characters. (I've followed this series since it was made into an anime but I think now's as good a time as any to leave a review for the manga.)

I'll admit, this series has gotten me a bit emotional (particularly the prettied-up anime adaptation) but as I read more and more into the series, I'm surprised I don't feel any attachment towards any of the characters. There are only a couple of characters I can name that received actual, note-worthy development and I won't name them for the sake of spoilers.

As I said before though, Isayama sure can write tragedy. It's realistic how horrified the people are by the idea of titans breaking through the walls and just destroying their homes and lives. However, I think I've shown more of an emotional reaction to the dying background characters than to the main cast and that's actually fairly disappointing in the long run.

This series is a diamond in the rough in the shounen genre for me. The lack of character development just makes me want to scream because of how much I love the horror-based tragic element the series carries.

Good but bad

I started reading the manga after i watched the anime, and i really liked it, it was really amazing. but the latest chapters felt rushed and the story behind Historia seems so fake to me, i just couldn't believe the author came up with such a thing, i was waiting for a better development. So i dropped the series and will read it again in a few months. I'm very disappointed with this manga sad

Good but starting to rail off.....

I dont really feel like i have to add more on why this is great, i mean it has been said, the story is great and the art is okay but still readable. The first 60% of this manga had me hooked and really amazed me. However i feel like now that this has become popular its been heading a bit more down hill. What i mean is the Author said that he was gonna end this at a certain point but after its fame he decided to extend it. And boy is he doing that. The previous Historia arc was so slow and bad in my opinion. I love this series for the intense situations, survival, action and all the mysteries involved. However we got a REALLY long arc that was basically a Espionage story of over throwing the government and what not.... The reason i disliked it was it didnt feel like the same manga. Everyone was just doing random stuff and they were making the story over convoluted just to extend it you could tell. They said to "save the basement for later" when that was one of the keys to the whole story! Plus Eren man i dont know what to make of him anymore. I loved the Eren that was determined, head strong and willing to do what it takes to survive and protect. However that whole arc he didnt feel like the lead at all. He just felt like a side character. He kept just being protected or needing to be. Hes not living up to the hope of man so far at all. Anyway a new arc is starting soon and i just hope that now that we got that filler like arc out of the way that this will get back to what made it great. of course ill update and change this review and rating once it things change

Not bad but...

I saw the anime first and it was pretty good, the plot was very good and interesting, same as characters.
But when it finished I started reading the manga, it was good (although the plot was significantly slower than the anime, I was reading chapter after chapter and I didn't mind at all, until I reached the latest chapter at the moment, then I realized that the plot was actually really slow and complex, since chapters are released monthly the plot got really slow for me.

Anyway, it's still a good manga for me and I read it when chapters are released.

Good at first

This was good manga at first, probably because it adopt similar concept to zombie, except instead of fighting slow moving monster they fight a giant with some as tall as 50m, to make thing cooler instead of building giant robot to fight it they use simple sword and cannon, and born super survival manga ever created, except just like any zombie or related survival genre if it drag then it became boring, and that's what plaguing this manga it could just end at chap 60(since it is 40page perchapter so it was equal 120c) but they drag it long put some politic in it and then BAM!! boring.

Too slow

My complain about the manga is that one chapter per month is freaking slow. I realize it is published by a monthly magazine, but seeing how the story progress... the plot tend to grow bigger. Monthly release is better if it's not... Too varied. Will it be another Berserk? Since 1989. I got cool down while waiting shingeki for a long time just to read it. It's still interesting but.. Not as addictive as others. Thus said, shingeki anime did awesome job. I'm usually manga person. Preferring to read manga than watching anime. Only a few anime based manga i like better than the manga. Shingeki is one of them.

Lost direction

This manga started out amzaing as an almost steam punkish survival story.
The MC was easy to connect to with his strong emotions and we quickly bond with his squad mates.
However the last half of the manga has been pretty poor.

The pace of the series became extremely slow. This is due to the manga becoming politically focused, where most of the manga is political wheelings and dealings.
After Eren became a titan I thought we were going to get a lot of awesome battles with him against the titans. However this is not the case as the mangaka has created reasons for him not to change which follows the shonen cliche of restricted heroes. Most of the time Eren has spent sitting around while other people do stuff.
When the mysteries behind the world are revealed I am reminded of the last season of LOST. Where I'm thinking "wait is that. what a let down" when the mysterious are revealed.
Also was really hoping that we would get more of the perspective and motivations of the 3 titans that infiltrated Eren's squad but that has never materialized.

Oh my...Anime is better though

I watched the anime and then read the manga.....and god I cried so many times...(just me? ok)

1) Anime Experience
Watching the anime, I cried in the very first episode, and then again in 2nd episode,... and again in 3rd. I was a sobbing mess because of how raw the atmosphere of Attack on Titan was. Eren's desire for revenge made me cry even harder because, honestly, I just did not think he stood a chance against those giant muscular monsters. Mikasa was my saving grace.

2) Manga Experience
I didn't get quite as emotional reading the manga due to the black/white images and off-beat art style. However, the story is definitely there--so I was drawn to the manga nonetheless. Everything unraveled more quickly in the manga, which made everything a bit more confusing and harder to digest. But the UNFILTERED violence and raging emotions bridges the gap and kept my adrenaline pumped up while I read the chapters.

This manga definitely makes an impact, and now I'm so emotionally invested in so many different characters that I can pretty much guess how much more water I'll need before this manga finishes. Frankly speaking, nobody in this manga is safe. A couple of my favorite characters have already died off in horrifying manners, and I'm just praying for the rest of the cast to live a lil bit longer!

Art is not the best compared to the other series I'm reading and this manga feels really slow at times. If I was rating the anime I'd say 10, but the manga is an 8 for me because I can't understand everything that is happening in the action scenes. It may be just me though. The plot is excellent and gives you questions that you want to be answered. So far, few of my questions have been answered, but there are hints to every other question I have so I am faithful they will answer them.
