Pass on this one

I really loved the first 2 books and each book kind of ended up on a hopeful happy note. This third book on the other hand was a very difficult read.

Like the typical stereotypical amnesia plot, Toru loses his past memories completely in the first 2 books, and then suddenly 6 years later in this book he regains his past memories. The only problem? He's lost his memories of the last 6 years. Honestly, I really hate these type of cliché plot devices, and this one really took the extreme on the turnaround personality.

After regaining his old personality, Toru, is now an abusive thug who constantly abuses Fujishima, his adoptive brother, and forces him into sex. The physical abuse is pretty revolting and the most painful part is that Fujishma takes it in silence for a whole fracking year w/o complaint.

I actually had trouble reading this book, and frankly just skimmed it. Maybe one day I'll read it thoroughly but I honestly just regretted buying the book altogether.

I actually thought by the end, that Toru would end up remembering his lost 6 years as well, but he never did. So from beginning to end of the third and final novel, you have the POV of this character that is completely new. He's vicious, mentally unstable, a drunk, obsessive, and everything bad you can think of for this guy. I really really felt sorry for Fujishima, and kept hoping that Toru would revert back or remember his lost time. But in the end, the story ended on a happy ending. Even though Toru falls in love (I think); he's still a complete dickhead who doesn't really care for anyone but himself. Good bye cake baking loveable Toru forever. Now you've got a seme who might flip his switch at any moment and justify all his abusive behavior.

I hated reading about the physical and sexual abuse, so while I recommend reading the first 2 books for all BL fans, this book is definitely not a recommend read.

Such a depressing novel

So finally I read it after looking for it for ages.. anyway.. what I can say is.. THIS IS REALLY A DEPRESSING NOVEL..

I dunno if it's just me being a crybaby or not but I cried.. in like EVERY SCENES!

Tohru regained his memories but he forgot his 6 years of memories when he had the amnesia.. meaning he forgot all the times he had spent with Fujishima in those 6 years and only remembered his hatred for him. You can already tell what will happen. Without his memories, Tohru came back from who he really was. The abusive, impatient and very horrible person to Fujishima. Aww.. just remembering that makes me cry.

And even if the scene is not really worth crying over.. I can't help myself but to cry a little because I keep remembering those sweet times that Tohru and Fujishima had shared before. If felt like Cold Sleep and Cold light were a waste instead. Seriously.

Though it was STILL a happy ending.

But ugh. I really really loved Tohru in Cold Sleep and Cold Light.. he was so sweet and all.. but in this novel.. I can't help myself but to HATE HIM COMPLETELY!

I mean, I remembered this particular line of Tohru in Cold Light:

"You keep saying I'll leave you when I get my memory back, but that's not true, I won't. Because I love you. No matter what the me before I lost my memory says, I'll convince him. I'll tell him I love you."

It was really so sweet that it moved me to tears. And the last scene in Cold Light.. wherein Tohru baked a cake for Fujishima on his birthday. That scene was sooooo sweet! So whenever I remember that, my eyes were starting to get teary because I know that in this novel.. that Tohru will never ever come back...

For me in my opinion.. the Tohru (who regained his memories) is not really inlove with Fujishima. He's just obsessed with the thought of "I don't want to be alone anymore" and that's why he's still with Fujishima in the end.. but I hope that's just my imagination.

I hated both Tohru AND Fujishima here. I don't know why Konohara Narise choose to write down this novel because it ruined the two prequels. Prequels which I liked.

So, like most people have already commented, skip this one. Let sweet cake baking Tohru live on in your imagination rather than ruining him by reading this novel.

Knowing Konohara Narise...

...and as much as I like her work, I should've stopped reading after the second book of this series.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
This third book is basically 120+ pages of abuse (physical/sexual).

I understand the back story and the events that lead to this development, but seriously, I don't need a whole book solely dedicated to it. Then his behavior seemed to just be accepted and forgiven several pages at the end. Well, we get a bit of development regarding Takashima's photography aspirations too, I guess.

Also, localization for all three novels are so shoddy--I've seen better fanfiction written by teenagers. A translator doesn't always equal a competent writer. Hire some proper editors jfc. A fan translation of another Konohara Narise novel outshines all three of the Cold series, and frankly doesn't give her work any justice.
