Description
Hoshi no Yakata centers around the employees of a suburban S&M club. The characters are beautiful, the storylines are charged with angst, and the artwork is very explicit.
The stories takes place at Hoshi no Yakata, a humongous Euro-style mansion, and Airenrou, another club located a few hours' drive from Hoshi no Yakata.
Name of the 5 volumes in the series:
1) Hizamazuite Kutsu ni Kiss wo (Kneel Down and Kiss my Boots) 2) Kedamono wa Ori no Naka (A Beast in the Cage) 3) Yokubou no Mitsuryousha (The Poacher of Desire) 4) Toraware Hito no Ikisaki (The Prisoner's Destination) 5) Doreitachi no Jouken (A Slave's Condition)

this is definitely graphic! If you're into s/m go ahead and read it. Well I'm not into s/m but surprisingly I enjoyed reading it. The story behind all the weird stuff they're doing had me interested enough to read the entire thing. ^_^ and I agree with ares6..what they did to Sumiya was horrible. I for one do not want to be branded by someone I don't even like. eww
This manga is not really a realistic impression of BDSM. The bottoms in these Stories are not really respected nor are they following the rules of security and SSC(safe, sane and consensual). They don't really care if the mental health of the submitting one breaks. It sometimes is even the whole purpose of there game, to break them and make them depended. I still have to say that I liked the Story to some extend. Cause it is set in a brothel you can imagine the rich perverted clients who think they can get everything if the money is right. My favourite character would be the Master cause he shows concern for his workers(sometimes), stops the brute clients(normally) and is a little manipulative. But he has bad sides too. The smut is present and rather hardcore, but there is also a storyline. So all in all I think it was worth reading and the art was nicely done. If you like BDSM and don't care if it gets a little hardcore, you should read it even if you are not that into yaoi
I was always interested in bdsm but I'm more turned on with soft bdsm and without those complicated bondage materials: leathers, weird things they wear. [I rather like normal clothes] First time I read this manga, I was a little overwhelmed. It was hardcore for my tastes. But then when I started reading further into the story few years after my first encounter, I found that I really love this manga. Most yaoi or yaoi which deals with bdsm have no plot. It is very simple and intended for readers to just get sex scenes out of it. This manga has hotness in it (and a lot of it! >-<) But also it has actual plot and I love how the mangaka portrays character's feelings and thoughts behind their actions. Also I find most characters to be very loving, and kind in their own way.
I'm totally in love with Sumiya. He is kindest character and caregiver in my opinion. emilyslash(-- I totally agree with you. I hate characters who are trying to make Sumiya into a slave. The reason why Sumiya is so interesting and amazing is because he's the perfect master and he should always be the master. (As long as he stays as all master role I don't really care if other characters switch or not) I totally agree with you on ch 8 thingy. It was so painful reading chapters after that but I really recommend you should since after this painful thingy, I love Sumiya even more! If you can't handle it, do something like I did and just skim or just look at the pic and quickly get over the cruel parts. I looooovvveee Sumiya's strengths~~ Even after the humiliation and painful heartbreak he had, he stills tends to other people's pain and guilt. You see when he's being the master and doing all sm activities, he is actually releasing other character's pain and guilt. This is most obviously seen right after Sumiya gets back from that horrid experience he had. Master gets really guilty about the incident and Sumiya takes that guilt from him. That part actually made me really sad and amazed at Sumiya's strength and kindness. I mean who can actually help out other person while you still suffering from nightmares of what happened to you? Sumiya helps everyone in the mansion. It appears as if Sumiya doesn't really care about his slaves but he has deep concern and love which was really romantic and warm.
And I don't know why people have so much issues with feminine and beautiful guy characters but I really love those type of guys compared to handsome types so actually I really liked that part. What I like more than yaoi bdsm is bdsm with girl as master and guy as slave. In this manga, usually masters tend to look much younger and shorter than slaves so it felt like slaves were guys and masters as girls so I really got turned on by it! Majority of yaois have big bulky guy semes and really small pretty guy ukes and it is pretty obvious that this is just guy on top of a girl theme going on. But this one actually is switching who gets on top or bottom so that part is pretty fair and equal.
I hated total of two characters in this manga. Yuuki and Nanasaka. Gosh Nanasaka is a total jerk and Yuuki, that guy is the worst! Take advantage of Sumiya's feelings. :'( Wish both of them just die.
Anyways would love it if more mangakas create this type of mangs with plot, character development, deep insight into characters' feelings and emotions, and hotness. I guess most authors just want the money or they are plain lazy. Back to the point, this manga is awesome!
I'm not into BDSM but I liked this manga, all five volumes, and I guess it's because Hoshi no Yakata is really romantic.
I liked the extra of the second volume the best, it's awesome.
For those who don't like any kinds of violence and/or too feminine looking guys... Well erm I don't like them either but I still like this manga, so maybe you should just try and read it
Obviously, if you can't handle bdsm/yaoi, OR if you have no interest in it, OR if you looking for an extremely deep and intricate plot, don't read that. ELSE, it's a must-read !
I really really liked this series, BUT the prerequisite was that there were 2 chapters that I had to skip. First one was Sumiya
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
getting raped by that annoying SOB Nanasaka. In my mind Sumiya is the master's uke ONLY, and that's final.
Second one was the major part of the final chap, in which

the master is supposed to be raped as well. In my mind, the master is a SEME ONLY (Sumiya's <3) and that's also final.
But apart from those 2 chapters, I've read and enjoyed every part of the series. In its own category, it's a masterpiece. The art is gorgeous, and the characters are very distinctive and individualized.
My two favourite characters were the Master and Sumiya <3 (maybe that's why I had to skip above-said chapters). And I've read a whole bunch of softer yaoi, allegedly 'with a real plot', in which the MC's personality was not even remotly as interesting as those two's.
The only character I didn't like, that I hated in fact, was Nanasaka or whatever his name is. He was an annoyance and a turn-off in the story, imo, in addition to being a whiny and self-obsessed drama queen. A real pest. As I said, I didn't really read the most harmful chapters, but I know that it would have been a major turn-off if I had. So yeah really the series would have been better off without this guy.
In the end, Hoshi no Yakata is directed at initiates, but if you're interested, it's really worth reading.
This was a great manga! I liked the fact that there was some hardcore S&M action but the plot followed along perfectly. There is emotion to all the characters (besides lust). I expected this to just be a PWP so I didn't want to read such a long one at first but when you get into it and understand the characters lives within the brothel it all works out. Sumiya's my faave character! Oh and I think only after reading the first book Hoshi no Yoru ni Furete will you understand the very last chapter. It's really cute too i think.
One of the few manga's I have ever read in which the hardcore BDSM sex was well balanced out with plot. That's right, it had PLOT. The story and its characters are both well told and as the chapters go on, you end up finding out just "that much more" about the characters personality and backgrounds too keep on interested beyond the smex.
Upfront, the story is told (for the most part) in between the different kinds of sex, torture and bondage scenes. The manga-ka put in just enough story too keep you reading, but I never felt that the manga had "paused too long" between scenes. Even if it wasn't full out smex, even the 'down time' had some form of bondage, be it piercings or... well, its BDSM, think of something. xD Plus, you get some kind of BDSM for (pretty much) everyone.
Although this book may be almost too much for newcomers into the BDSM scene/genre, coupled with the unique (sometimes feminine) artwork can lead the overall experience to be more then slightly off-putting and negative as a whole. It's important to give this manga a change (with an open mind!) and you may be surprised yet. It might just take the place among the top ten favorite smexy manga's on one's (personal) bookshelf.
What really impressed me the most it's the art, simply breath taking. I wish there are more yaoi mangas with such incredible art. I also loved the hot scenes even if S&M is not my thing. I believe all this enjoyment was possible because there is a plot behind the art and a very interesting one. The plot made me read the manga almost all in one afternoon. Definitely a must read even for those who are not into S&M - like myself.
While I like SOME stories with the whole Master/Pet thing happening (I LOVED Fukujuu No Gakuen), but DAMN this is WAY too extreme for me. When you start introducing needles and asphyxiation, I'm outta here! UGH.
But, if you're into hardcore S/M and all that, then you'll enjoy it.
The art was very old school, which was kinda interesting. Other than that, it's not my cup of yaoi...
This is one of the absolute best Yaoi series I have read. If you like BDSM, D/s, hard and sexy and aren't squicked easily, this is for you! It offers an exploration of the many darker and basic faces of humanity with characters that have depth and multi-faceted personalities.
"Behind every exquisite thing that ever existed, there was something tragic." "The mutilation of the savage has it's tragic survival in the self-denial that mars our lives."
I was drawn in immediately, feeling for all the people at this club. The all had their own histories and issues to work through and each one's story was intriguingly and deftly delivered.
The art was incredible. The tools in the BDSM lifestyle were drawn clearly and beautifully. The only complaint I had was an occasional 'too feminine' look that didn't appeal to me for some of the characters.
The pain and the joys were all very evocative and believable. The decisions made by the characters made sense to me and kept me reading. I think this is really a niche piece, though. It helps if one has done a little research into the mentality of this lifestyle and the needs within the deeper recesses of humanity (that are often beaten out of us or shamed out of us in current society) that these types of activities can fill and allow a person to grow and understand themselves.
I think that Maia-sensei could have gone even more indepth with the back history of some of the characters. I would have liked to read more of their past tragedies and accomplishments that made them who they were in the present.
