Description
From Tokyopop:
Rain Jewlitt, known as the Methuselah, is a spaced-out, immortal, 624-year-old man dressed in priest's clothes. He's got eternal youth and a large price on his head... put there by those questing after the secret of his immortality. Machika Balfaltin is a tomboyish, energetic 14-year-old girl who, upon the death of her grandfather, sets out to kill Methuselah, the one bounty her assassin grandfather, Zol the Grim Reaper, couldn't kill. Instead, however, Machika ends up being saved by Rain again and again from other aspiring bounty hunters attacking them both. Sound like the beginnings of an odd relationship? You won't believe where their journey takes them...
Well, this is.. so far.. manga that can create tear in my eyes. I couldn't stop feeling sorrow and sadness when Rain started to recall back his memories 600 - ago. It was so heart breaking and to think he can still smile all the way in his 624 Years Old. ( I recommend to listen to Close Your Eyes song while reading this manga). Seems like he smile all the way long but keep the sadness in his heart. How heartbreaking is that?
On happy side, Rain is sooo eye catching and worthy to drool. He has everything and whole perfect package for you to dream about him every night. I couldn't stop laughing when there's time he make silly big grin and stupid things. He seem's childish but on the same time someone you can relied on. How sweet is he?
For the author, I praised Ozaki Sensei. I don't know that female mangaka can create something "shounen" like but have shoujo element in it. The art was perfectly neat, the storyline get along well and also the way Ozaki Sensei expressed everything in this manga.
The reason this manga got 10/10 ( i shud give 10.5 grrr.. ) is :- 1. The art <-- coz' I care about it sooo much before start reading the manga 2. perfectly character development and expressions 3. the storyline and plot goes well and the manga genre know where to show up it's not something show up any time 4. the atmosphere. Read it. Then you know what I'm talking about. (special reason )5. that can create tear in my eyes? Nuff said.
And, I couldn't help it. I love "PURE ROMANCE" type of manga
I don't understand why this manga isn't more popular, really. I discovered it years ago and have been following it religiously since I began. I think perhaps the author touched upon a subject that people cannot easily imagine, and definitely can't relate to--immortality. Rain has lived for over 600 years, watching people die. It's hard for any real human to sympathize, as its a pain we could only crudely envision. As far as my imagination goes, I think I can conceptualize it quite well. And perhaps that is one of the factors that I love, that despite all the pain the main character goes through he can still manage to smile. I am sure I would be unable to. There are far more intrigues than that, however. The main basis is romance, but it hardly overwhelms the rest of the plot. It's fast-paced, adventurous, heartwarming and altogether tragic.
I've read a complaint that "the bad guys never get killed when the protagonists get the chance". I'd like to form a small rebuttal in defense of the manga.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
The main antagonist, Yuca, is also immortal, and has lived for who knows how long. But despite his wrongdoings towards Rain, he was evidently his friend. The only time Yuca had slept was against Rain's back. They have a bond, and it's not as simple as "Let's kill the bad guy because he's bad." Rain wanted to help Yuca, and even if he couldn't he claimed he would kill him if he had to, in order to save the people of the world that he still believed harboured humanity.
On another note, this is the only manga I have ever rated 10 out of 10.
Immortal Rain is epic. There really is no other way to describe this manga. It has everything. It has plot, action, adventure, mystery, drama, and romance. The plot is just phenomenal. It's the kind of plot that ties everything together and leave absolutely no loopholes. The plot ties everything together structurally and emotionally. There's just so much back story that makes the main character, Rain, so interesting. Every character has a story, and every character grows tremendously in this manga. The chemistry and the emotional depth between the two main characters is just perfect, and the twisted logic behind the emotions of the other characters are so eerie that they're addicting. This manga is a must read.
I honestly didn't expect much from this series when I first picked it up. The only reason I bothered to look at it was because of its positive user rating. Turns out the series is pretty awesome! I really like the relationship development between Rain and Machika. Not only is the romance great, the plot is pretty awesome too! My only beef with it is that Catch-22 issue with the antagonist.
definitely one of the best manga i've read. it's a good mix of shoujo and shounen, but the romance probably makes girls a bigger target. fast-paced, great plot and art, and wonderful character development (aka yay romance between rain and machika!). what's not to love? (besides the fact that we're all dying to read volume 9 TT___TT) seriously, go read it. now.
Meteor Methuselah is one of my favorites of all time. Though, if you are going to read it or pick it back up again, I recommend that you at least try to finish the first three volumes to see if you're hooked. It honestly didn't grab my attention, but after pulling through, it became my favorite manga of all time. Also note that TokyoPop has only released volumes up to volume 8. There are a total of 11 volumes and the rest have to be bought or you can read the scanlations online. (But please support the mangaka by buying her books if you can!)
Many of the characters are loveable. Some you might hate in the beginning, but most managed to prove themselves to be amazing in the end. Rain is a lovable goof and he has been described as being too kind, one of his flaws pointed out in the manga. Machika... I'm going to have to agree with another reviewer that yes, she does cry a lot. Rain does have to save her many times. I won't spoil it, but near the more later volumes, I do feel there are some positive changes in this. Yuca, I really enjoyed thinking of him as the villain in the beginning, but in the end, after learning more about him, he also became my favorite character.
The art is beautiful. It does get even better in later volumes. Ozaki is amazing at portraying emotions through her artwork and she's even great at showing motion in her fight scenes.
Now that the manga is over, I'll really miss it. I hope the author will create a new story someday.
I love Rain, I love Machika, I love Yuca, I love Sharem,... I just love the whole cast! The only exception to the rule would be Freya. The way she treated Rain just isn't right. She couldn't appreciate him at all. She seems to be quite shallow.
I realy like this manga. I don't realy get the plot though... Is he looking for that angel reancarnation? But the events are interesting after a while. The art is very good, clean and pretty(Rain is such an eye candy^^ can't stop looking at him... I get stuck on pages because I want to look at him more) *cough* besides this the other chars are also good. And realy love the romance that is between them, very cute and not to much^^ better than many other shoujo manga.
I read it and decided to get a hardcopy 'cause it was that good!! It's unfortunate that TokyoPop is gonna drop all their mangas, so I hope some other company will pick this up.
I'll say this manga is more shounen than shoujo. It have its cool epic moments like the fights and its sweet moments with the romance. Storyline is fluid and hooks you on. Character developments gradually grows and you don't feel like you got cheated out of anything. I can't wait for the next volume!!
---Edit--- Finally got a chance to finish this up. Again, I wish some other company pick this up. I really REALLY want to complete my set in hardcopy.
Rain's character development was really deep for me. As we get to know his story, I feel that's how his personality came from. Some people might call him weak and pathetic, but i think he's just your typical strong-but-very-kind guy that is trying to protect his precious people. He's simple-minded and kinda dense, just like me. I don't like to think of really complicated stuff. If I like it, I like it. If I hate it, I hate it. He puts others first and is a really REALLY caring guy. I'm not going to spoil it for people, and I think he thinks of that PERSON as his own brother, like familiy. It's like having a family member who does something selfish and stupid, yet still forgive that person. I totally could relate to Rain and for someone to call Rain STUPID should try to understand Rain where he's coming from
And as for Machiko, I think shes your typical girl who is very emotional. I can relate to that. She's a young girl, why can't she be a crybaby? At the age of 14, girls goes through emotion. They are happy, sad, etc etc etc. I remember I was quite a crybaby when I was young. It helps explain Machiko's insecurity sometimes. Her only close person to her, grandfather, died already and now she doesn't want Rain to leave her. I can see that as being real. She's not annoying.
Anyway, if you wanna read and give it a try, go ahead. For me, this is among the best I've read and it was among the first hardcopies I've bought. I'm still hoping for a miracle that the rest of the volumes will be licensed so I can happily put the rest of the set on my bookcase.
I am really new to shoujo genre, and can't compare to other shoujo mangas, but I just can not express my fascination from the first chapter to the last. The story is griping literally from the begining, and it holds you to the end with the same excitment. The good part of this manga is that there is no repetative chapters like "the gang saved the day again and gain new friends in the village, oh adventureous life". I personally hate these types of manga, and this one had a part in the begining where there was real danger from becoming like it..but actually the storyline is developing with the characters, and for the characters. I absolutely LOVE every character, from the main antagonist to the main protagonist- everyone says that the leading female is kind of whiny, but considering her age and circumstances in which she develops, she has every right to be. And even if she is portrayed as a strong woman warrior, her crying is what bring us closer to her-afteall she is just a human and a child. You will definetelly love main protagnoist Rain who is portrayed as an optimistic, goofey, happy, kind character, and the main antagonist Yuca, who is a direct contrast to Rain..they are perhaps like the sun and the moon, each one has its charm in certain circumstances. this is obvious in their physical appearance as well. So, yeah, definitely read it. it took me one day to finish it, although its not that short. AND THE ART is beautiful. You will enjoy it to the fullest.
