Description
From Aerandria Scans:

The story is told as a collection of allegories based in a medieval fantasy setting, but aimed at mature audience. The main character is Helga, a girl who lives completely ostracized from her fellow-villagers, but she seems to enjoy it rather than suffer from it. The people in her life, whose stories we also get to explore, are her best friend Eda, the kind young mayor and two of his servants. And in the heart of the village and the story is the bell-tower which changes everything with its chime...

I loved it but still didn't quite get it

aiish's comment was very helpful in explaining just what was happening. I knew only the fringes of what the story was trying to convey and I'm not sure if that's because I'm less perceptive than others or if it's the fault of the author for being ambiguous. Maybe a bit of both? (I ain't taking all the blame here!) Still, a very interesting take on discrimination, coming-of-age, and otherworldly forces beyond our perception.

Master of Sin

@ aiish
Master of Sin is a woman. From the very first chapter, her breast are noticeable, even in tight-fitting clothes. There are also a few "Sakura" moments.

These two, are from chapters 1 and 2, respectively. Haven't read more so far, but other than The Prince/Mayor being gay because Master of Sin's a man, I am inclined to agree with your comment.

This was very confusing the first time I read it, but then after reading it again I had my own understanding of it. So here it is:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Obviously the Prince was the chosen one by the Virgin, to remember her when she sleeps and watch all the sins the Virgin couldn't bare to watch. When she sleeps and is not looking at everyone, they awake at night and remember who they really are. I'm not entirely sure how Helga remembers, but it's probably because she, and her mother, sinned when Virgin was still awake. Therefore, their hair turns black, signifying adultery, or something like that.

Master of the Hand, MH, was a man who loved Helga's mother, or possibly just another black haired woman, and actually slept with her. As it was said, his hair use to be blonde but had turn darker due to their sins. So he blames himself for killing Helga's mother because she was executed for it--- SO this makes one wonder who Helga's father is... Hmmmmmm...... Either way Helga and MH falls for each other, because she reminds him of his past lover. Anyhow, I loved the way the author use this trying-to-remember-forgotten love theme to bring a strong angst to the manga, very heart wrenching! (Excluding the [maybe] incest thing.)

As for the Prince, I mistaken he was gay cause I thought Master of the Sin [MS] was a guy, but no she was girl. You can tell he loves her (not sure if in the form of lover, best friend, or sister), but there's obviously guilt or sadness involved when he sees how crazy MS becomes when the virgin is sleeping. That's why he had decided to reject her love, obviously after having slept with her when the bell had tolled before. I'm pretty sure their feelings are mutual, so that was why he didn't give his love to the Virgin, but when he wanted to save Helga from execution, he sacrificed his love and ran towards her,. That's why the curse on the town was lifted, and I believe the Virgin wanted to love and be loved in return. That's why she called Mayor, her "Prince."

In the end, a villager mentioned that the island was possibly surrounded my monsters and I believe this is because the Virgin was one, but I'm not 100% sure as well. Helga and MA became Major of that island with the help of Eda, and the Prince and MS, AKA Johanna, met up and probably traveled together. Everyone had forgotten about the Virgins and that's why the Prince questioned why he cried when he saw the doll, because it was like the Virgin had become nonexistent, like it mentioned in the manga. 'If it's not remembered, it pretty much doesn't exist.'

Surpasses Expectations

For something that was written by a hentai writer, this was extremely artistic. The plot was a little bit cliche but nevertheless I found it interesting. I loved how the manga gradually revealed more about this mysterious town and its ways. And again, the art was surprising shoujo-esque and simple. I can see where some of 'mature' scenes may be coming from though. A unique read, and I would've looked for more works from this author had she written more of this kind.

I think that it should have ended with the execution. The fact that the Virgin was so easily defeated was a little strange.

I however think that this story is more about how those people who are rejected from the dating pool can feel such jealousy and anger over the unfairness of it (like johanna) and she tries to control the people, however at the end, she dissapears allowing them to live their normal lives because she realises her own hatred is consuming her. I don't get the plot with Siegfried, I was confused. It did not seem like a happy ending when he

ended up with Helga
because he only wanted to do her because he reminded her of his previous love and she was a replacement. Suddenly their relationship becomes a loving one in the last pages and that is completely weird. Not to mention that she was a child at the beginning of this manga....

I think the tree suffered the most in this manga XD

It's surprisingly good for a josei

I think this series is good. The characters are interesting, especially Helga of course, the sexual desire in the last chapters was ok. However, it seems to me that the story concentrates more on the love between characters and the discrimination against the mail girl was just a little. And I don't think I get the "allegories" that the summary was talking about. Perharps it was the sex scenes with the trees ? If only the art were less shoujo like. On the other hand, if this is what a typical josei looks like, i suggest we remove the seinen/josei barrier immediately.

fast-paced supernatural romance

All the bad reviews made me think I'd hate this or be let down. But I actually like this - it isn't really about character development or a coherent plot, but a slowly developing sense of the mystical.

It is a bit too fast-paced - like the story should've been twice as long - and if you don't like speculating on what happened or who/what this is or how supernatural things come to be, you'll hate this. The character plots and relationships resolve satisfactorily, though, so you aren't left with a cliffhanger relationship - just a big sense of mystery...

Good start, but shitty end.

The start was good. A complex fantasy world was painted. Complex feelings. It reaches a climax. I cry. Perfect (10/10). And then - everythink crumbels. The story makes a random turn within the last chapter. The big conflict is discarded (through unexplained supernatural stuff...). The ending sucks (1/10). Do not read it. Not worth it.

TL;DR: Good start, worse ending.

I have ambiguous feelings towards this manga, it's not terrible, I think the kind of story that the author wanted to tell could have been good. However, I can't quite put my finger on it exactly but, all the allegories are just over the top and in the end it just comes off as something told in a basement cafe by a person in a beret, emphatically pounding a bongo drum after each finished sentence. But perhaps this is just my own preference, being fond of more subtle storytelling as I am smile
