A more or less original story with lots of potential
by Joese

The idea of each knight having to act a certain way is quite original, many other characters of different series gain powers in a similar manner, but its flawlessly executed in this series. Even the interactions between the knights are part of their personas.

The story follows their leader, who has the most restrictions and is rather frustrated by them, just as his predecessors. And the power they gain is quite underwhelming compared to their own abilities and it's given by a god whose existence is questioned by the very knights that represent him.

The story isn't perfect. Since it's a Shoujo, don't expect an extremely complex story. From the beginning you'll probably expect who the death knight is (they constantly hint it). But It's still a good read since to has to resolve everything staying in his persona.

The comedy is a strong point, and lots of things are inserted to ease the tension created by the rather grim plot of the first part (you could probably skip the MC taking care of his appearance and give less focus to the characters with a sweet tooth when they're eating). Though if they really did that or focused on other mature aspects they DO mention ... it probably wouldn't be a Shoujo.

All in all, I'm definitely not part of their target public, but given it's on old manwa I'm quite impressed, the story might seem to go slow for all the added parts, but considering the length of each chapter and how they're advancing towards the conclusion of the ark every moment, it leaves new manwas in the dust (I abhor most new manwas because they usually only contain what I considered the added parts, are short and go nowhere plotwise).

What a great world, wow!

The characters are really great (I want to know more about basically every single one of them), and I really love the bond that all the Knights share. It's very funny in a lot of places, but some of the humor can be pretty gross and sexist (like, as a throwaway joke, Sun says he's jealous of a serial rapist at one point). There's also some pretty graphic descriptions of torture - they even show some of it - which might not be what you're expecting going in. The plot is good, though, and the world it's set in is amazing, so well fleshed out. I definitely recommend reading this before reading the novel; the manhua's story ends in the middle/beginning of the novel, and I was taken by surprise and felt incomplete because I was expecting it to keep going.

Basically, this was a really great introduction to the world of Sun Knight, which is one of my favorite fantasy worlds, it's just such a cool concept. I probably won't be reading this manhua again because the novels just go into so much more detail...but, if you aren't a fan of light novels, then this is still good on it's own 🙂

The art is good in its own way (dunno how it's called but I think this style has a special name). But what is the best? The characters! They are terrific. This manga is very psychological, imo, and Sun Knight is just... well, I totally root for this cynical and clever (and handsome, eh-he-he) man. Definitely worth reading!

A funny read, refreshing idea in the middle of tricky kingdom theme. I really love the sun knight's personality, and his interaction with other knight. They're such a badaas, especially the sun knight! He looks like someone pure outside, yet he could be an awesome mastermind behind a big change in the country.

My absolute favourite

This is seriously my favorite thing to read of all time. It's funny, witty, wonderfully satirical (not like those "parody" anime that fall into the same traps they make fun of) and surprisingly complex. I haven't found anything else quite like it even though I'm an avid fan of most genres of manga/anime/light novels. Something that really makes this work stand out IMO is the theme of duality that runs throughout; all the characters are the exact opposite of being one dimensional, and it is extremely interesting to see the various facets of their personalities and character they are characterized with and how different they can be. The main character Grisia Sun is one of the most complex yet interesting characters I've ever seen portrayed in an anime/manga/light novel series. He represents all good and benevolence and pure kindness, and shows it really well. Except, he's also narcissistic, lazy, manipulative while still having the capability to actually be a good person (at least towards the other Knights... Sometimes)

Even the plot is quite well thought out, with no loose ends -- seemingly insignificant things from the start do actually play parts later on, making for a coherent and detailed reading experience. Even though it sounds a bit like I'm praising LSK as a literary masterpiece though, it's not. It's just a really good light-hearted read with surprising depth that I think anyone would enjoy.

To the males: yes, this is classified as shoujo, but it's actually a bit misleading since there are literally no distinguishable shoujo elements (not even romance) which I can find at all, coming from a former mega shoujo fan.

Edit: just noticed I posted this review on the manwha, not the novel. In my opinion the novel is much better to start off with since there aren't many chapters of the manga out yet. So read the novel of LSK!

Usually when a novel I like is adapted into a manga/film, I dislike the adaption because I'm constantly comparing the two. But with this manhwa, like 1/2 Prince, sticks to the novel without being boring- and it still is as hilarious as ever!

The characters are very intriguing with their double personalities and the plot is extremely intriguing. Don't be put off by the art in the first few chapters- the style was changed after reader's complaints and the new style is more suitable to the dark undertones and thickening plot.

I would definately reccomend this to any person to read, whatever their taste- try it!

A fun read

I like the satire and the humor that pierces the dark ambience. smile Though some of the writing is a bit simple, it's still very enjoyable and much of the humor involves poking fun at the "tropes" in fantasy stories and bringing it to a new height. I've always wondered how anyone in their sane mind could parade around in such flashy armour(as in: those villains). Well, guess what? This time, both the goodie and baddie sides are equally ridiculous in their flash. Though much of the humor is light but it can also be rather dark, a la writing for Chinese movies and literature.

I really like the personalities of the entire cast and the main is such a narcissist! The interactions between many of the characters is quite amusing and Pink is one of my favourites.

The artwork is a bit sparkly but all the same, I'm really glad OS Cat has improved by leaps and bounds from her previous series, where much of the art had potential but a lot of the panelling was a big mess. There's still a bit of odd panelling in Sun Knight but overall, the dialogues and scene flow quite smoothly.

The pacing is really fast, so the writing develops very quickly. Now, that's a far cry from a lot of fantasy which can take over 500 to 1000 pages just to find out who the villain is. Also, the overall plot is still developing so I can't really comment too much on it. It could go into something quite complex and sophisticated or it could remain as a simple but engaging title. Who knows but it's a fun ride so far. smile (Yep, I haven't had time to read the novels so far.)

Btw, I preferred this over 1/2 Prince 'cos the writing was less cluttered.

I love this manga! Bishies galore!!! (not just because of the bishies but its a bonus) I think this manga is hilarious! I love the main character too. His personality is very refreshing as in its not very typical for shoujo and ive always loved personalities that are different from appearance and anitheros. So this manga is right down my alley.

I strongly reccomend it!

The first chapter(s) or so might turn you off because the characters don't even look like they're in their twenties, but keep on reading. What happened was that fans got so outraged that they wrote to the author, and we basically got the awesome 'hey-they-actually-look-twenty-years-old' art.
