Description
From Viz: There is a world of myth and magic that intersects ours, and only a special few can see it. Misao Harada is one such person, and she wants nothing to do with magical realms. She just wants to have a normal high school life and maybe get a boyfriend.
But she is the bride of demon prophecy, and her blood grants incredible powers, her flesh immortality. Now the demon realm is fighting over the right to her hand...or her life!
Black Bird received the 2009 Shogakukan Manga Award for shoujo manga.
Misao is just weak and perverted. Pretty much cried in every chapter, and like some of the administrators who had stated below, she acts all pure and innocent and acts like she doesn't want kyo to touch her but lets him do what he wants with her anyway. The story is good, I just cant stand the female lead. Especially her perverted face sometimes.
because girlfriend cannot go 2 pages without crying. In the beginning I noticed it but thought it had more to do with her new situation, but as I read Volume 13 it's become apparent that no, she's just a really weak female character. Like other reviewers, I also agree that I only read each new volume because of the time I've already invested in it.
Okay, rape is defined as being forced to have sex against your will and without your consent. Therefore, if Misao, however stupidly, offered to have sex with Kyou then it is not rape. Secondly, characters - and that includes women - have done much, much worse things in (shoujo) manga than have sex with someone they love to save said person from death. I'm not advocating it, I'm just saying that there are worse things shoujo heroines have done in order to "save the person they love"...like having sex with the person they don't love, but that's a different matter. A lot of people describe Misao as weak and relying on Kyou. This is true; but how else is a perfectly normal girl supposed to survive demon attacks etc. if she has no powers? Isn't it kind of impossible for her to do anything but rely on Kyou and his bodyguard people in order to survive? The plot is okay - it's there, there is an end point which the mangaka is getting to in a roundabout convoluted, way (nevertheless, though, she's getting there). I, for one, am quite curious about the prophecy and what could be so terrible about it.
In short, I feel like a lot of these negative reviews are a bit harsh. Most shoujo is, unfortunately, like this. The fact that Misao is not a super innocent, super naive heroine, and that she doesn't freak out when her boyfriend kisses her, is kind of a plus.
You'll need a better understanding of Japanese folklore (and at some points, Japanese global culture) to really appreciate this manga...that's all it takes to become a great reading! Sorry for my English btw...
Girl is passive and is a disgrace to females all over. there is very little character development with her. first, she's weak against attacks against demons. then she does nothing about it. doesn't learn exorcism or anything to protect herself, instead she just relies on the bishonen kyo all the time to save her. does she have no shame? i mean, she could learn some self defence courses and even get someone to help her learn some exorcisms so she can live without kyo around!

she willingly lets kyo pretty much date rape her every time she sees him. she's all, no i don' twant to do this! but lets him anyway.
you know how the picture of her on the front of the book normally looks like some bondage/rape scene? the whole story's like that.
it's horribly sexist. if you came looking for a decent heroine, LEAVE NOW! the girls is stupid and naive and not so innocent. it's not even formulaic shojo! i nice shojo wouldn't show

date rape scenes! date rape by the way can be defined as sexual assault by someone you know that's not consential. kyo goes around kissing misao in.... places.... and she says no, i don't want this but he just continues and she lets him. stand up for yourself girl! and at the end of chapter 25 or whatever, when kyo's about to be killed- SHE OFFERS TO HAVE SEX WITH HIM TO SAVE HIS LIFE. IN FRONT OF A CROWD PRETTY MUCH WTH?
well. at least that was what it implied by the cliff hanger. i stopped reading after that.
i'm not sure why this got an award and everything.it's an embarassment to manga and an embarasment to women.
At first I thought "Not ANOTHER one like this..." but the plot has picked up and it is starting to become more than a romance. So intense, hot and badass. I don't actually mind that she' s a tad weak, as every once in awhile I like to see a manga where the girl needs to be saved by her dark knight. Personally, I think he is such an awesome male lead that he makes up for her weakness. I see why this is so popular and I highly recommend it. Also an update: Sh** just got amazing! Seriously, near chapter 55 it begins to get intense!!!
Actually, this manga is really nice and good. But what made the manga "look" terrible is probably Misao. I hated the fact that she's so annoying and weak, relying on Kyou all the time. Not to mention that she's so stupid. Honestly. Especially in chapter 50. Whatever did she do that for?! (Not giving spoilers! Hurhur! x3) Her action was so silly that when I read chapter 51, I still think that what she "did' wasn't necessary. She said she knows it's betrayal to Kyou, but why did she still do it? No common sense at all. The fact I gave it a 10 because of the other characters like Kyou and the 7 retainers as well as the flow of the story. More like the plot. It's unique and interesting. I LOVE THE TRIPLETS! They are so adorable! Another reason why I love Sakurakouji Kanoko's work! Her chibis are really awesome. It makes you wanna pinch her chibi character's cheeks.
I hope the manga is not too long, although I already read the latest japanese raw. Misao and Kyou's relationship might be lovely dovey, but I find Misao always confuse herself as well as doubting her love or Kyou's love for her. And then, she kept on thinking of whether to follow Kyou's path or her families. Then in the end she wants to choose Kyou. What the hell? If she already made that decision, then she have to let go the other one and forget about it. Ugh. I hope the mangaka will fix her up a little in the end. PLEASE!!!
The only reason why i'm still reading this is because i feel too bad dropping a series that i've been following for so long. However, plot wise, this series is getting annoying. Oh and the main protagonist is dumb, weak, and ANNOYING. Maybe it's just me, but i'm getting annoyed with everything about this manga. Maybe i should drop this series after all. yup, gonna do that.
At first i thought it was gonna be one of those long draggy pointless stories but wow has it gotten better, by around chapter 30+ it gets REALLY good. Not that before chapter30 it's rubbish but it was just normal I suppose. Idk what people are saying about being unable to like characters cos I love some of them.. I think you should really give it a try
