Description
Related/spin-off to Spawn (American Comic) by Todd McFarlane

Spawn: Shadows of Spawn wisely does not retell the U.S. comics story of Al Simmons. Instead, we get an all new character, Ken Kurosawa, also known, unfortunately, as Double K. Ken is a savvy street thug with a heart of gold. While he may be a crook, all his earnings go to caring for his ailing sister, Mariko. But Ken's rubbed the wrong people the wrong way and dies rather horrifically in a car bomb. As with Al Simmons, who is referenced several times in this first volume, Double K makes a deal with the devil. He'll trade his soul just to be with his sister again. As with any deal with such nefarious creatures, Ken finds himself "alive" again seven years later. Dressed in a bizarre costume and sporting incredible power, Ken has a new role to fulfill, that of a Hellspawn. A number of questions are raised about Double K's purpose as a Hellspawn and the possible redemption of the wicked. But like the original Spawn the questions are left unanswered in favor of action and comedy.

If you come to this manga and haven't read the original American comic, I highly recommend that you start reading that first before coming back and reading this. You'll get a lot of references mentioned if you do this. And, the American comic is much better.

If you have read the American comic, you know the basics of how everything works, but do know that they change some of rules found in the original. If you come into this manga expecting to see all the grotesque stuff that you see in the American series, you be sad to know that the most grotesque they get is Spawns face. The series felt like a nice vacation from the Jim Downing story arc (the current comic story arc at the time of this review). Is it good, no. Is it enjoyable, yes if you want to have a night of brainless entertainment. You could get through this in around 4 hours.
