It's called this not after the broadcasting channel that many people are probably associating it with. The series gets its name from a type of movie theater back in the early 1900s, which is shown in this page of the manga.

It's a nice book; I really liked the Puu Inu no Mori story.

As the other person commented, the actual title is "Nickelodeon Aka/Nickelodeon Red."

True to its name, Nickelodeon is a collection of very short stories. A girl steps on a landmine and is blown to pieces, so her head casually asks her friend gather her body parts back together. A boy finds out that every year, his late brother used to challenge a giant demon to a sumo match for fun. A girl wishes on a shooting star for her friend's saliva to turn into alcohol. Fairytale heroines suddenly awaken to cannibalistic urges. There's a story for everyone!

Plot: 4/5. There is a new story with every chapter, resulting in 39 stories total. Seiman Douman had plans to double that number, but the magazine was unfortunately cancelled before that. Still, Douman manages an incredible variety of stories, ranging from the wild west and Nazi Germany, to outer space and puppet shows. The characters are very unique and quirky, and many well-represent a diverse selection of sexualities, genders, and personalities. A variety of creatures are featured in the stories as well, both good and evil, big and small, creepy and not-as-creepy.

Storytelling: 4/5. Each story is told in just 8 pages. The storytelling is thus very straightforward and to the point, while still managing to fit a very compelling plot and thought-provoking theme. Most of the stories have a comical - and somewhat disturbing - tone, while many others deal with contemplative tragedies and moving themes. The plot devices are as diverse as Douman's characters and situations, as he uses many unusual subjects from life, creating very unique situations that the readers can either connect with or feel curious over. Some references he has made include kopi luwak, the Alien franchise, Jesse James, the Columbine Massacre, and Dokkalfar. These elements often have an important role or theme in each story, with some even making their way into the titles.

Art: 5/5. Nickelodeon's art is very stylized and highly expressive. Douman is a fan of Hellboy, and Mike Mignola's influence is very apparent. The thick outlines and strong use of black and white lends more impact to the storytelling, and is easily manipulated to suit the "creepy" feel of the series. Douman often makes use of negative space to create an almost surreal sort of atmophere in his stories. The simple art style allows for easy reading, and is ideal for letting the readers focus on the story and themes that Nickelodeon conveys.

Nickelodeon is great for anyone looking for something unique, funny, and introspective. Due to each chapter's short length, it is very easy to pick up and put down at one's own leisure. I recommend it to anyone with time to spare - it will provide those who give it a chance a steady source of entertainment all the way through to the end.

Nickelodean is a word. The channel did not create the word, it just uses it. It was a type of theater that charged a nickle for entrance if I'm not mistaken.

I'm pretty sure that is where the name comes from.

if you love off centre logic, low key black humour, and quirky characters, this is for you. i just love the way the characters accept anything the world throw at them, and the way some heavy themes are handled. the art is unique and lend a flair.

all in all, must read.

Quirky, amusing short stories which Dowman Sayman excels at. Most of them revolved around some theme related to death. So if you like dark humor you're going to love this. The characters are also varied & interesting and no short story is alike, each deserving of a full serialization.

The stories range wildly from the bittersweet to the brutal, but are all well written. I love the fact that the stories are interconnected (and the characters will frequently refer to each other) and Dowman Seiman's art style is beautiful in it's bold simplicity.

I've probably read this series three or four times now. I may be obsessed.

Unlike his other works, this one was bizarre but not funny-bizarre, more like all-over the place bizarre with random small stories, one each chapter of seemingly different genre's, sometimes with a character we saw in an earlier chapter. Sometimes it's brutal, sometimes it's tragic, sometimes it's almost amusing...

It keeps you reading, but in my case it was just quite interesting, not amusing nor something I would be able to read for much longer than this. 350 or so pages with a small amount of text on each page was just enough, I felt like I didn't want to read more anyway I mean, it's like reading more than a dozen different one-shot mangas in 39 chapters, none are really that interesting and you wouldn't read it normally, but when you get all of them gathered together like this, it's somehow interesting to read them.

Oh, and I don't mean that it's like reading a lot of different one-shots in that it's different scenes from the same world, all the chapters clearly jump between different manga universes as well, ones with magic, ones with flying stuff that seems to be used to play future-pokemon, ones with supernatural stuff of different kinds or normal worlds... It's truly like reading more than a dozen different one-shots from the same author, anyone who've read it would be able to say the same.

Not that that's a bad thing; the only bad thing about this series is that it was axed. Dowman Sayman is a crazy but creative guy; Nickelodeon is basically the ideal of his body of work. I examined it at length in a full review. This series is mostly seemingly standalone stories, but they're often connected through small details or usual themes. Can be funny, can be sad, pretty much always great.

If this gets adapted into an anime and becomes popular in the USA - we would see a very unhappy TV production company...

Is it really titled Nickelodeon? I thought it seems odd that it isn't titled, "Red Nickelodeon" or "Nickelodeon Red". Check out the translation here.

Anyways, I kinda like the series...I just don't see it related to the actual title that labels it.
