Waraenu Douji - 108 no Gou

Description

A long time ago, a pair of twins were born. Back then, however, multiple births were considered unlucky, so one of the twins, a girl, was... crushed to death with a millstone, buried under the shade of a large mulberry tree. The girl's soul, lacking a fully grown spirit, could not reincarnate, and as such was forced to wander the world. Only after collecting 108 individual sources of human misery/worldly desire could she move onto the next world.

It's such a pity this project was dropped (by the scanlators). This series is actually quite good. The art style is beautiful and the backgrounds are detailed. The flow of the story is really well done. The content of the stories tend to vary as well and it's not as predictable as other episodic series such as (for example) Hell girl.

A great manga about humans' desires. Every single chapter is a masterpiece. The art is gorgeous. The series . . . it's . . . I don't have enough words to discribe how amazing it is. I'm giving 9, because I'd like this series to be less episodic. I wish there was some big plot that would glue all stories together. Another reason for 9 is lack of evil characters (not counting few panels in the last chapter). But don't take me wrong, this manga does a superb job of depicting the gray world—not just a black&white shounen crap. Although most chapters end with the best end, some of them have an equally good variation in omake (I think the omake where an illustrator girl chooses parting over living with husband's mother is even better than original). P.S. I have to admit I'm biased because I fell in love with the spirit. Her appearance scenes are really beautiful. Besides, I'm a sucker for old-style manner of speech.

This manga shows the best and worst of human natures. Like the spirit says in every chapter, the manga really does "expose as thy sins". It is a magnificent story of misfortune and the beauty as well as the horrors of being human. I cried during some of the scenes in chapter 4
