Can't let go of the oneshot.
by Cyren

Rating: N/A
I've read a couple of oneshots that are so good that they deserve a continuation as a full on manga.

Nisekoi is not one of them.

It's understandable that the series would start out differently, as the premise for the one shot would not have lasted more then one chapter (being the point). But the series itself seems downgraded and it's just...well, it's not nearly as exciting. Which would make sense, seeing that it's a full on manga.

I guess I just liked the one shot so much that the changes made in the actual continuation just don't sit right with me. It was a great one shot.

I love the art

The one thing I can say is that the art is great. The expressions are vibrant, it's in a slightly sketched style but the lines are clear and consistent. The main character is likable enough. The only complaint I have is that the main character acts in a very "anime" way where he overreacts to everything.

Overall, this seems promising and looks like a typical comedy romance manga.

It's not bad, but...

This series is not bad. The problem is that it's not what we'd expect from the author. Unfortunately, I wouldn't call the series amazing either, at least not in the sense that it breaks the expectations of the genre creating a new standard for all other works to follow. This series is generic. It does do all of the tropes very well though. The art if very clean, the character interactions are very nice, and the story is easy to follow. If you like romantic comedies, then you will without a doubt like this series. If you're expecting something extremely new and exciting, then you will probably be disappointed.

The problem I have with this series is that we've seen it done before. Not necessarily better, but it's still something we've all seen. What will make or break this series is the journey to the end destination, and at this point in time, it's up in the air as to who will ultimately win Raku.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Usually in these situations, the childhood friend ultimately looses to the new girl. If there is a childhood promise, then the promise holder usually wins. When the childhood friend and the promise holder are the same person, then that adds a new level of intrigue to the mix.

My initial review (since removed by the mods) was extremely harsh and unfair to the series because of my disappointment at getting a generic love comedy. After looking at the series objectively, I think it can easily stand on it's own, but time will tell if it'll become "definitive" or even if it will last long enough in Japan to develop into something that ultimately surpasses being generically well done.

Disappointment indeed.

The one-shot was better than the serialization. Although the one-shot was cliche it was more fun to read. Extremely disappointed when I read chapter 1 and 2. Seriously? Childhood friend, childhood promise, NEW TRANSFER STUDENT, abnormal "late for school" encounter, and hate each other yet continue hanging out with each other? The generic levels went off the charts. Even with the little twist at the end of ch 1 didn't seem original. If it's in weekly shonen jump, I'm sure it won't last long unless the author pulls a better story together.

The end of Komi Naoshi?
by Dingoo

Disappointing.

The one thing I always liked about Komi Naoshi was that he had this ability to always come up with new and interesting ideas, that may or may not be original to some people, but that always felt fresh nevertheless. This Oneshot on the other hand is just another conventional cliché manga like we got thousands out there. There is not one single interesting Idea in the whole thing.

It seems like after not being able to hold up the initial success of double arts and eventually failing (at least commercially) at pretty much everything he released, his confidence took a serious hit. I’m a little worried that he might have given up on his way of drawing manga and now tries to get back on track by doing conventional stuff.

Certainly not perfect, but it's an entertaining short story, if you're looking for an innocent romance. Art isn't great, but it's consistent. If you're not at least smiling by the end, you have no sense of humor.

I loved the oneshot but i can't see that becoming a long series if it stay the same way as the oneshot.
War-peace-war-peace-war-peace

Was ok in the oneshot but in a serie after a few chapters it will start to be really boring.
