I was in a divided mind about this one. At first sight it seemed to be boring with a familiar plot and an unbelievably innocent uke (Imagine another Ayase in high school uniform, this time just a bit smarter but a lot funnier) Hiroya the bookworm is easily the type that would throw me out of the book before finishing the very first chapter, but surprisingly this time he turned out to be the hook. He's my favorite, yet until now I don't have the foggiest idea of how I have been attracted that much. Like Ayase, he started dummy and girly, He'll grow more mature throughout the story though.

Started with a set of impossible events but later the series turned out to be more realistic than most of yaoi out there. It does deal with AIDS and (a little bit) with homophobia. However everything is dealt with in such romantic manner that it's truly yaoi by no mistake. Those twists and turns have successfully generated a bitter-sweet scene around Yatteranneeze! and it wouldn't be far-fetch to say it's a yaoi classic.

great (except volumes 3,4)

This is a good title- by the time you're finished you really feel like you've been through the long, satisfying journey along with Masaki and Hiroya. Unfortunately, volumes 3-4 are just boring fillers with with cliche stories about gangs of bullies, jealous girls, the woes of organizing the school festival and so on. However, the story does pick up again in volume 5. I must say the the story ends a little oddly, though. Instead of the usual emotional ending you get a normal ending that seems like it belongs to a regular mid-volume chapter. One extra end chapter could have done wonders.

Masaki and Hiroya are both likable characters, even though I was very annoyed with Hiroya's initial extreme naivete. Yes, this is the type of uke that would almost be raped by a minor character but wouldn't dare think badly of them because of it. The good news is that he does get better as the series progress. The artwork in the early volumes can look a little outdated (the series started in 1994) but later volumes don't suffer from this problem. This series is perfect if you're in the mood for a long high school love story!

One of a Kind

I love Yatteraneeze! It's one of my favorite manga's and definitely a nice break from the fluffy and smutty yaoi mangas that are so common. Unlike other manga's it takes a more realistic approach to that kind of relationship. Everyone is not happy just to see them in love, the characters can't sleep around without consequence, and saying I love you doesn't make everything wrap up like a fairytale. Even though it makes you angry/sad to read it's kind of refreshing to see the change from the usual happy go lucky yaoi where the hardest thing the protagonist has to do is take two panels to think about if he loves the other guy and -- spoiler alert --- he does. The art wasn't top of the like but it gets better or maybe I just stopped caring as much once I got into the story. Anyway I really recommend it. It's really my favorite manga.

I first started reading this last year but lost interest during chapter 3 - i found myself disliking the characters and the story seemed a bit slow paced. That said, at the time i was into alot of action manga and anime, so perhaps i was influenced. I came back to this yesterday after browsing and decided to give it another shot, i kept reading this time and found my opinion changing rapidly. The characters start out completely different to how they end up, and the progressive change in their personalities is good - so where i originally very much disliked Masaki i soon found him to be charming, and where i found Hiroya to be a weak little book worm, he too changed and gained some strength. It was nice to watch them progress at a gradual pace, its a very relaxing pace, but the surrounding story keeps you interested despite that. There is not much in the way of high drama or big revelations in this story which may deter some, but it has other aspects - such as homophobia, health worries and general relationship troubles to keep it interesting for the reader. When things to finally progress to a definite stage its enjoyable, because the suspense is left to build for so very long before reaching that conclusion. Towards the end i was hoping for something more climactic or certain but it ended on a very gentle open note - in a way that suggests the mangaka could very easily have written a continuation with no issue. Its a real shame the mangaka is no longer alive, her works gradually got better and better and i can't help but feel its a shame that she couldn't have written more. All the same, with a manga like this one she will not soon be forgotten by me at least.

Pretty good and touching. However, the ending could've been more interesting.

One of the better ones

First of all, i'd like to share that I HATE nineties manga art. The faces, the hair, the clothes, the abnormally long legs, all of it. And so when I started this, I was already prepared to endure it, and was expecting to quit after a few chapters.

But the story was actually good enough to pull me in until the end. And as a bonus, the art actually gets better, until it barely even bothered me anymore! Big big plus: there are even really cute drawings of the couple takashi and hiroya ^^

I came to absolutely love the story. It's the first yaoi I read where being gay was actually a discussed problem. Not just thinking "but we're both guys" and then they have lots of sex anyway. No, it was well-developed in here. And I really liked the bit about aids. I was still a toddler during the nineties, so I'm not sure about this, but I felt it reflected well the situation on gays at that time.

I also loved teh fact it was that long! It was not dragged or boring. I wouldn't mind reading even more of it. And because in longer series, the story has much more time to develop, it feels more genuine than the 1-volume stories.

I have one bad point though: what the hell kind of a skiing trip was that at the end? Someone falls down, loses conscousness for five minutes and oooops, there goes his memory of the entire love affair? Puhleaaaase!
And ten pages later, he wakes up, falls down a flight of stairs and....tada, remembers everything?
oh god, that was such a blooper after all the good chapters that preceded it. Amnesia never ever works. I very rarely find any books or films or series where amnesia doesn't completely ruin the story. It's so fake!

But anyway, except that little slip-up, it was actually better than I'd expected, and one of the better ones I read. I really like how masaki is so completely in love and very protective of fujimoto. And fujimoto who looks very weak and fragile, can actually kick some ass if he wants to. He stood up for himself at school when he changed his image, and even knocked out a teacher. (not on purpose though bigrazz )

Absolutely worth the read I say!

This was a wonderfully entertaining change from the yaoi that I am used to reading.

When I started reading this I had really high expectations especially after reading the summary intro, but after the first few pages I started thinking ‘Aw man! This is one of those yaoi that have a really mean Seme and an overeager, crybaby, no confidence Uke that I hate so much… ’ Well I have to say it completely blew me over after those first few pages. I was completed mistaken about my worry of the cliché uke and seme. I began to realize that this was nothing like all the other yaoi/shonen ai manga I had ever read. It was so realistically put together and so entertaining all the way through, that I stayed up all night to read it coz I couldn’t stop myself. YEAH it was that interesting. I loved how the characters had distinctive personalities and features (which is something that’s rather hard to come by in this genre of manga) and how their story was not just some romanticized gay love, but instead a realistic presentation of what might actually happen in such a relationship real life. I have to say, even though the art wasn’t my best (it got better as the story progressed by the way) I was hooked to the story so much that I ended up falling in love with their old-fashioned 70’s style and art.
I am so in love with this manga, I don't know if I should shelve it up on the same level as my all time favorites “Crimson spell” and the “ViewFinder” series by Ayano Yamane by the fact that they both have really well developed characters and an entertaining story to boot. Ah I’m in love!

l really really liked reading this yaoi series! The art is really adorable! I luved how the story & characters were developed!! like how Hiroya changes from a silent student to much more daring one and how he slowly accepts Takashi.. And as fpr Takashi.. well, I guess I think it's cute how he chases after Hiroya's heart, the changes and things he undrtakes just to keep as close to Hiro as much as possible! ^-^
Well, yaoi & shonen-ai fans, I suggest u give this story a shot and I garantee u that u won't regret it! >,@
