Ide Nobuhisa has always been a boy full of vitality and a young promise in the field of track running. However one day after a competition, he stumbled over the prettiest pair of legs he had ever seen! Their owner, a young girl practicing tennis makes a promise with Ide that she will teach him how to play. After seeing the name tag on her racket bag, Ide puts all his efforts into passing the test for accessing the same high school she goes to, Makunogama.

In his first days in his new high school, Ide discovers two things: an old friend of his is also attending, and nobody knows of a girl with the name he saw on the tag! He and his friend join the school tennis club, where they meet another first year, Takita Louis (Ruui), a very good tennis player with a bit of an attitude problem.

However things start to look better for Ide when his dear missing girl appears in the school! As it happens, he misread her name on the tag...
Takada Hinako was well known as one of the members of the tennis club, but some time after meeting Ide for the first time she suffered an accident and has now lost the use of her left leg. Hinako is no longer a happy spirited girl and tells Ide she can't fullfill her promise.

Eventually the opposite characters of Louis and Ide end up confronting each other in a tennis match. Ide is an incredible fast learner, but he is no match... until Hinako decides to give him advice. Things only get worse, however, when their club president decides to put Louis and Ide as a doubles pair for the upcoming inter-high-school tournament!

a drama...

I like the fact that this is a realistic manga, not some pure gag shoujo manga. I think it is amazing how Ragawa Marimo come up with simple yet deep story. It turns out to be quite dramatic, making me mused with all sort of feelings.

At first, I didn't give too much credit for this manga as I'm actually a fan of shounen manga (needless to say, I'm actually, really really reeeally fond of gag manga). But as I further read the story, I come to fall in love with it. Slowly, but surely. As a matter of fact, I even read the raw (the whole 32 of them) and reread it at least 3 times already. It got into me emotionally.

Sometimes I feel like I've been sucked into the story, and I can't help but holding my breath when the match actually getting serious. (wonder if I'm actually the type to be influenced easily by others... nah, that can't be. I'm quite the picky one.) being the only (for the time being) series that could give me the same nervousness was HxH, and the two of them are like...what, completely in different dimensions!

right, whatever I was blabbering... might as well read it yourself, if you love drama, that is.

A chore

Well... it's not a bad manga. It's readable, and not as unrefined in art as some sports mangas. But I certainly did not enjoy reading this. More like... it put me in a bad mood all frustrated = =.

The art makes all the chars have baby faces, but other than that, it's not horrible at all.

The story well... I dunno what to say. It was fine reading english scans, but after reading the chinese raws for a while... it felt like a chore reading ><. Perhaps it's because of the length? Or maybe cause the chinese translations didn't make much sense at times (I mean the grammar, my chinese is good enough). IDK, but I probably won't be reading this again.

*shrug* with all that said, I'll repeat this again, it's not a bad manga, and it's not as if I disliked it. I didn't feel bored, neither did I feel hatred. But for some reason I just felt extremely frustrated and in result almost as if reading was a job instead of entertainment. I do want to know what's gonna happen next and stuff, but there's nothing to keep my focus anymore ><.

It starts off so funny and promising ... but nothing more. Until volume 14 all you can feel is exactly like that in vol 1, by which I mean there's no climax to make your heart beat a little faster. Even the humor remains still much the same, which I would describe as of more "cute" than "humorous". The whole story doesn't really focus on tennis but rather on characters themselves, which should've perfectly fit RAGAWA Marimo's realistic sense, but then again been lighten by in-between tennis matches which would soon make me sleepy out of boredom. Overall, this is still a readable manga. I'm impressed but not deeply fall for it.

It's a very different sport manga, especially if you compare it with other manga sports (well... most of them are shonen, unlike this one). It's more to psychological conflicts than the sport itself. But, still the tennis' elements is shown accurately. I love the characters development. Exactly what you expect from the author of Aka-chan to Boku. Seeing the status in Japan, I wonder how the story goes. But, so far... (I've read to volume 7), it's great. I enjoy it, and can't wait to read more ^_^

I really like the fact that this manga is not all about tennis. I love that the mangaka focuses on developing her characters. That there's some drama but they're not too heavy, that the tennis matches are always good, on par with other tennis mangas out there like Baby Steps.
Those looking for a good sports manga should read this. biggrin
