subject was handled well

I guess the subject across well since the author was personally effected. If you feel weird when reading this, it really portrays how affected people feel in real life when they are not able to express themselves clearly. The pacing was not quite right though and 11 chapters are not enough to cover the subject but to give an insight.

Harsh Journey
by DoujinHunter

This manga focuses on the trials and tribulations of a girl addled with stuttering and heavy social anxiety.

One of the best aspects of it is that the author does not put in many (any?) thought bubbles, instead focusing on the art and dialogue. This makes people's true thoughts, emotions, and meanings just as difficult for the reader to understand as it is for Shino and those around her. Where other authors may have spoiled this effect by revealing character thoughts, Oshimi plays up the distance and hurtful actions that people direct at one another to brutal emotional effect.

This is not a manga made to ruthlessly poke fun at a character's anxiety like Watamote with some apparent commentary on them and their habits, but a journey that the main character undergoes in the face harsh challenges both within and without over which they may perhaps triumph over with courage, ingenuity, and help.

A rather accurate story of dealing with stuttering issues.

I've never had problems with stuttering, but I know some people who do. Luckily it's not at the degree of Shino, but the mangaka knows what he's talking about (in the afterword at the end of the series, he reveals that he too has a stammer) and it's very accurate. Not being able to start sentences with vowels is awful enough, but when your own name can cause that issue? My heart almost couldn't take it.

The horrible part is I've seen comments, left on the page for this series on manga reading sites, by some people complaining about how they get annoyed by Shino and how they can't stand her. I hope you guys do realize that's the exact reason why she has such strong anxiety as a result of her stammer and you're a part of the problem.

If you do have a caring heart and want to see the world of someone with stuttering issues, this is definitely a good pick-up. Don't worry, it ends on a happy note and you'll leave feeling greatly enlightened. To those who do have stuttering problems, this will definitely hit close to home so brace yourselves.

Good stuff, Note: Not Aku no Hana

Not perfectly accurate, but pretty good slice of life on how life works out for someone with intense social anxiety works out.

Putting a 10, because a) it is different and pretty well executed at that b) because I fear Aku no Hana fans may not like this and vote this down.
