Charming tale with abhorrent end
by philip72

Rating: 5.0  / 10.0
I knew when I started reading this that it was Josei, and my previous experiences with Josei warned me "watch out, they're all the moral equivalent of a high class NTR ero doujinshi".

But Usagi Drop was very different; It had a strong, practical, eminently admirable protagonist, and his sweet little adopted daughter. The daily adventures of father and daughter were utterly charming and warmed the heart. I would have rated it an 11 if I could.

Then came the finale... I felt like a child molester while reading it, utterly repulsive and... well... grotesque. You'd have to be a monstrous pervert of the tenth magnitude to enjoy it and think
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
"it's ok 'cause they're not blood related".
I'd rate the end a -1 if I could.

As for the minority who say "the ending's a refreshing change from the usual cliche"; I'd like to ask, what cliche?
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Not having sex with your young daughter is a cliche now? Amazing.

So I've changed my rating to a 5, splitting the difference between +11 for most of it, and -1 for the conclusion.

I like it, and a warning

Let me warned you that while parts of a lot of reviews of this series does not qualified as spoiler, I think most people can guess just by reading the non-spoiler part of the reviews what will happen, mine included. So let me warn if I you happen to read this first.

Personally, I like the story through and through, from the beginning to the end. I respect and understand why many people have problems with it, but I stand by my opinion. Yes, it could be another type of ending, but this one is also reasonable. I don't think it's sudden either. The author actually spend time to show the development, but if you marathon through the series in one go, you probably feel it is sudden.

Also, I think Daikichi's respone to the fact that Rin like him is the most reasonable one that I can think of. He gives his objective opinion why he don't really like that, from the parent point of view. When pushed, he still hold his ground and tell her to wait and see for another two years. It shows that he takes her feeling seriously, but also not forget the fact that she is young. It might just be a short time thing. Still, after two years, Rin proved herself that she is serious, and her feeling lasted. You have to remember that there is another two years time skip at the last chapter. They both wait and think about it for quite a long time before actually change their relationship.

Unlike others, I actually think that the ending is not cliché.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Actually, ending up with Kouki would be cliché in my opinion because that is what I thought almost the whole time up until after the development of why Rin stop liking Kouki (but still care about him like a brother).

In the end, I highly recommended Usagi Drop. The whole story of course. Sometime there is a story that you like but you just prefer another type of ending. This maybe one for many people. Example of that for me is Toradora! Even then, I don't think you should stop (or suggest others to stop) reading in the middle and miss another good part of the story just because you don't like the ending. On the other hand, if you're like me, who like both the journey and the end, you'll be reading this over and over. Go experience the whole ride, and reach your own conclusion with the whole picture. Happy reading.

... If only It end the story before time skip. I know it will end up like this since mid-april (read spoil from jcafe24) still I wait and read it english translation for chapter 56 just a few minutes ago. Tell u the truth , i don't like this ending at all.

I just found out that this manga have sequel (or spin-off) named Usagi Drop: Bangaihen. Hope that story don't lead the same way as original usagi drop.

I for one liked the ending. Highly refreshing from the usual cliche, I can see where Rin is coming from too. Plus I've a feeling that the mangaka planned this from the start, after all it is a very rare sort of conclusion considering how taboo sensitive Japanese society is. To see it in this highly popular and well-planned slice of life shows that the mangaka DID put in a lot of thought before making this conclusion.

I think the general opinion was this was a good serious gone bad like most other titles then tend to hit it big (this was sort of in the middle.) Chalk up another person who wasn't a fan of the ending.

I really enjoyed the story especially the first arc, but the ending gives me goosebumps. Nevertheless I still recommend it, because it is 10/10 in the first 24 chapter, 8/10 till ch. forty-something. 5/10 afterwards.

I agree with fuzetsucans in that you can stop reading at ch24 and it be a really good story. It was interesting seeing how he reacted in raising a child, from getting a daycare to bedwetting, and was a pleasant read. If u like drama u can even keep reading after the skip and be satisfied (i dont so it was more annoying and shoujo-es). I think this may have been cancled and rushed though due to how it ended

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I think the part that shows this most is the second to last chapter when rin visits her mom. Through out the entire series, all 54 chapters, we were told that her dad was daikichi's grandpa. So its almost incest when she starts liking him. Then all of a sudden, *boom* you were adopted :D....WTF! ARE U SHITTING ME? that's the biggest cop out since ever. So many ways to end this and the author goes out of her fucking way just to have the mains end up together. FUCK THAT! its rushed, theres no feeling in it, and honostly it just feels weird since like 20 pages b4 he was acting like a normal parent. God im so glad i had stopped being connected with the characters at the time skip cause i couldnt imagine how pissed id be if i was still interested in the story and this shit happened.

I enjoyed this series fairly well in the beginning, a cute slice-of-life that I go 'awwww' to.
Even after the time skip I enjoyed it... then near the end...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
She ends up just like her mom meaning, she has a thing for older men. But I'm probably going to be hated for saying that, oh well... I still don't hate the series. And yes I can sorta understand why she likes him but I'm still saying she's still like her mom.

WTH!!!!!!!!!!

^okay let's get to that later.

Good concept, it is something I like. Definitely not something that happens in real life, but the characters and pretty much everything else is realistic in a slice of life sort of way. To a point I got bored.

Then somewhere around ch45
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
All of a sudden Rin feels something for Daikichi. That is just unbelievable. There were no hints of this at all, way too sudden, coming up out of nowhere. She even liked Kouki for the longest time. I could see it happening when I was reading, but put it off my mind soon, especially after the time skip. Then all of a sudden--- bam. I doubt it's true feelings or that it will last, since it occurred in the last two volumes.

Better than what I anticipated
by Kamelot

Rating: 9.0  / 10.0
Knowing that the anime will soon air, I frankly couldn't hold my curiosity much longer and decided to give it a shot but at first I did not want to dig in too deep so I won't ruin the anime. But the premise was so promising that I couldn't resist so I ended up reading up to date. The first part of the manga was the sweetest part. Seeing Rin as a child and Daikichi acting like a father was something really cute at the beginning. I liked this manga because it remained realistic until the end and it did not neglect the nature of humans.

The ending did not destroy anything, infact I was anticipating it. It was like 1 out of like 50 types of possible endings but in my opinion, the most likely to be happenning. How so?
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The words "3rd grade relative" were actually mentioned just in the 2nd half of the manga but that was already obvious from the beginning. If the mangaka wished to end this one in another way then he might've chose another type of setting having Rin as an even closer relative. Technicaly I don't see any iregularity. They are two different people, connected just by their deceased grandfather, so teoretically they are not sharing the same genes, just a few of them, genetically speaking this is not something malicious. What I want to point to the ignorant people that kept saying the ending is disappointing is that you guys do not have any life experience at all. Of course Daikichi seemed like a father in the beginning because he had to take care of Rin since he assumed the responsabillity. But as time changes people change as well and feelings change too. That's why I say, that you people take the nature of humans pretty lightly. The ending might seem a little bit odd but lets not forget that this is slice of life, and stuff like this happen in real life as well.

All in all, a splendid work. I hope that the anime will do justice towards the manga.
