Going home for his grandfather's funeral, thirty-year-old bachelor Daikichi is floored to discover that the old man had an illegitimate child with a younger lover! The rest of his family is equally shocked and embarrassed by this surprise development, and not one of them wants anything to do with the silent little girl, Rin. In a fit of angry spontaneity, Daikichi decides to take her in himself! But will living with this overgrown teenager of a man help Rin come out of her shell? And hang on, won't this turn of events spell doom for Daikichi's love life?!

Never mind, they're all deserving of it.

Usagi Drop is one of those slow, quaint titles that latch on quickly. Essentially, it is a slice of life story revolving around the main character and his aunt (who is young enough to be his niece). Initially, the story is a quiet chronicle of the mismatched duo as they make their way through life, and the guy's quest to find out more about the scamp he has taken on.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Enter a 10 year time skip, and things become slightly different, although no more frenetic - the pace is as slow and sedate as ever. The story settles into another groove: the bonding process is complete, and the series shifts into an introspective mode, as the young scamp is now a lady in the making, and her life is gradually becoming independent of her guardian's. At the same time, the guy, once contented, also feels a deeper need to settle down and find a partner.

At least, that's what I think. The series has a long way yet to go. Don't be put off by the quaint art - the charm of the series is something that would be a shame to miss over something so trivial.

Usagi Drop is one of my favorite familial stories. It takes a little girl with a memorable personality, and shoves her together with a somewhat inept, but good-hearted single parent, as is the cliche in the genre. What makes Usagi Drop so interesting is the writing- the author approaches the situation in interesting ways with unique little bits of humor and drama thrown in. Of course, the height is reading about Rin and her antics, but all of the characters that have been thus introduced are compelling on some level. People who like slice of life will enjoy this, anyone just looking for a lot of melodrama should probably continue searching though.

Its rare that I'll look at a series and be willing to grade it perfectly. This however is one of those stories. Its simply too good to pass up. With humor and seriousness, its hard not to like all the characters, even the idiotic Daiki, who though his heart is right, still struggles doing whats best.

A cute and fun series for both male and female audience. It does have common grounds with Aishiteruze Baby and Akachan to Boku (Baby & Me), but is rendered differently. A must-read among the heart whelming stories.

This manga is josei because it was published in a magazine aimed at an older female audience. So the protagonist being male or female doesn't make a difference. As I think about it, women reading this would perhaps already be familiar with the situations one encounters in raising a child, so seeing Daikichi's attempts and sometimes failures would take on an extra amount of humour due to this familiarity.

Anyway... this is a really adorable and funny series that I think male and female readers could enjoy. Being told from the guy's perspective does make it rather unique and give it a fun, unexpected tone. The artwork is loose and sketchy but it has a nice style. And Rin has a lot of spunk. It's so fun to watch her throughout this series!

its speaking more to the male audience. the whole series is from the guy's pov of a cluless gyuy who suddenly has to care for a child. i say its more seinen than anything else.

Well, those of us who aren't kids anymore, anyway. It is cute, sure, just not the kind of flowery cute you'll find in the more horrible realms of shoujo.

And, get the books if you can. Not exactly super cheap, but excellent quality.

When i read the first chapter the first thing i thought of is Aishiteruze Baby, only more mature and with less romance as a male reader i can appreciate this time of work as well it something different to read rather then all the other mindless rubbish out there nowadays. if your looking for a heart warming piece don't look any further this one is for keeps.
