As someone who watched the anime first this was a decent read. If you're expecting this to be 1:1 with the anime then you couldn't be more wrong. The main story beats are all present but the story flows differently, some characters get fleshed out more than in the anime and there are even some new characters who weren't included in the anime. There are things the manga did a better job on and there are things the anime did a better job on.

Do keep in mind that this version has a lot of (yuri) fanservice, which I don't mind, but sometimes it comes off as incredibly forced.

Honestly, that was my first reaction when I saw the yaoi/yuri scene at the series. Well, not that I mind the Yuri... but, really... is that even necessary for this kind of thriller-tense-wannabe series?

Take that aside, overall, my review more or less have the same tone with mr/miss residentgrigo. The plot is somehow messed up (one time about school life, another time about 'odd' romance, another time about war of certain clan), the twist is not that awesome, and the thriller tension of certain arc... is fail I guess.

Thankfully, The art is great (u should look at the anime if u don't believe it).

Well, I haven't finished the series, but seeing how 'boring' the plot is... I hope I can convince myself to watch/read it again. But, given how great the anime/novel rating, I guess it's just me having a different preference of story

I had already watched the anime, which is one of the best I'll probably watch, I started this manga. The art is good beyond words, not only the cute girls (and boys), just look at those backgrounds!

I'm against using "yaoi" and "yuri" terminology in this work because (at least yaoi) are very specific names of specific genres (originally, "yaoi" means "nonsense"). They're (inexistent) "gay" and (too much) "lesbian" scenes, and they had a purpose. I would be hypocritical if I say I don't enjoy girl-on-girl action, but they are too long and too much, and it was embarrasing to read it on the bus; one of my friends asked me "what are you reading?" I replied "I'm still with the hentai manga I showed you the other day".



OK, that was too much whining about terminology and gayness. Let's move on.

I like the more joyous characters, specially Shun, Maria and Saki, all of them are less melancholic that the anime, even Mamoru is annoying (but still very annoying). Maria is more cheerful and aggresive, Saki is less frozen by revelation and more instantly shocked (this way she can act) and Shun is more charismatic and less gloomy (it worked fine in the anime nonetheless).

I read reviews about the novel that tells that it is very dark and cruel, the sex scenes unappealing, sad and ultimately unsatisfactory for the characters. I like how it sounds, I'm waiting for it.

Shin Sekai Yori has been my favorite story, and I am excited to see that it's being made into a formidable manga; the level of Oikawa's art is astonishing. The story doesn't cut too many corners so the story is still very cohesive and the emotion riding the plot is as glorious as ever. I hope that the author decides to revisit Saki's world in a sequel. By the way, Risa Taneda who voiced Saki got more than 20 new roles for various anime because she did so well in Shin Sekai Yori. Ah, I could die a little more peacefully if I had her voice from Wareta Ringo playing nearby as I did. The Yuri elements might not be everyone's cup of tea, (I can hear my friend Kassidy yelling, "Where's the Yaoi?!") but it's mine for certain.

Post apocalypse world, what can go wrong?

Well, the theme, apparently. since it's too depressing, and the characters get killed right and left, and not enough sex scenes to take our minds of that... I must say that it's not to everyone taste.

Yes, the bigger problem it face is pacing. The manga will benefit greatly with more structured story telling, revealing strange nature of the world in timely manner. I can imagine the thrill if they don't get revealed whimsically. Exclusion of yaoi, since it's mentioned to be exist in the novel, is a welcomed alteration, since I believe demographic for manga is more segmented than for novel. The art is great, but the design is not.

Would not recommend.

The anime and the novel have far superior storytelling. Here, the story is a jambled mess. Build up, which made the anime so suspenseful, is almost absent here. This manga would benefit greatly from a much slower, measured pacing.

Cutting the yaoi parts was unnecessary (especially considering the unwelcome changes to the story that this caused), in my opinion, but the yuri gets my full approval.

This is the definition of a shitty cash grab without redeeming features. Only the art is good but that also holds true for 50% of all professionally published manga. I stopped watching the anime because it moved like a snail and bored me but it wasn´t bad. Lets just assume the novel is the same. This adaptation here though just sucks and can´t stand on its own two legs. No explanation whatsoever to the characters and setting, just crazy exposition in Volume 2 and full on nonsense in Volume 3. Gratuitous lesbian sex between 14 year olds that makes no sense, grinds the story to a full stop and manages no undermine everything else. That on the other hand is here in spades.
Seriously, why is there a fingering orgy between multiple girls in the public bath other then for the nudity?
I also accuse the writer/artist of being homophobes. They knew that boy on boy wouldn´t sell and turn the shonen readers of so lets skip all that and add more Yuri action. Fantastic. Why would the readers be interested in a grade school level romance for the main two girls where they can´t get up the courage to confess their feelings to their male love interests when they will just bang each other instead an the end of the chapter. Their lesbian relationship can´t be a draw either because how the world-rules are and where the story is probably going. There is even sexposition (hello Game of Thrones) because porn over plot right? Don´t get me wrong, the weird and highly random narrative grinds my gears as much as the sex and i only tried the manga because i heard how bad it was.
The whole thing reminds me of the My Hime/Otome manga adaptation which had the very same problems.

Update: So this corpse crawled over the finishing line but the book still hasn´t left japan? Well that makes sense as one won an award and the other is creepy shonen p0rn and my first review (based on vol.1-3) even got a conversation going. Well this mind boggling spin-off is one on the most critically derailed adaptations in recent memory so i am glad that my assessment wasn´t too harsh. If you want to see real slaughters then look at amazon.jp´s listing for the Shin Sekai Yuri manga as i at least tried to be fair last time. I flipped through the rest (as fast as i could) to get it out of my life and the series even managed to worsen as it went along.
Reasons are NTR elements in the final arc, horrendous continuity between scenes, loli sexual coercion that leads to a scene of breastfeeding (that entire scene was just characters destroying and reminded me of the surprisingly comparable Cross Ange) and how our lead remembered her dead lover (more like sex toy) in the form of a flashback to an orgy. Isn´t first love sweet? All the male characters are still as flat as toast and only show up to fill some quota or something and the art (he should do porn instead) is utterly unfitting. The last volume even closes on a nopan shot of the lead back in her 14 year old body so at least it stayed consistent. Sigh. Let´s just say that the manga wasn´t PLOT focus. Then i still would have disliked it due to the incomprehensible nature of the narrative and i am familiar with the source material! I wonder if i would have understood this tale´s intent better if i was a fresh reader but that shouldn´t matter as i still would have shook my head as the entire story just went on random tangents between time jump with new characters introduced to be senselessly slaughter next while executing any form of structural coherence on top. This may be the worst manga adaptation of recommendable source material in years and it can stand in line with Witchblade (stick to the comic only here) or the one for Rahxephon manga (at least it wasn´t a p0rn doujinshi). I am glad that this travesty got the internet beating it deserved and it still boggles my mind how this was published alongside Titan for 2 years. The master of publication disaster Champion Red would have made more sense and i wouldn´t have touched it then. Well i wanted to burn myself after hearing the online uproar around it and that i did. Well done me? Watch the decent anime, wait for a fan translation of the book or stick to the dystopian manga like the Seinen Eden - It's an Endless World!, the Josei Husk Eden or go for the ultimate classic of classics and read Aldous Huxley´s Brave New World. All of them are very dark and sexual charged but none were written for 13 year old´s in mind and can back up their content and then some. You know just like a certain Miura manga. The really dark one that won a Tezuka despite the baby slaughter, the sex orgys and...
Read all of them and leave such childish trash as Oikawa tried to sell here at the roadside.
How the hell did the original author allow any of this to be done to his original characters is my closing though.

The plotline is great, and its scope is very ambitious. It's interesting how they added so many ecchi elements to a relatively dark storyline. The art is one of the best I've seen in a manga and it has very fast paced and enjoyable action.

What I'm curious is if they remember what happened to Reiko and are just ignoring the reality. If that's the case it's really dark and strange and I wonder what will happen to the other characters.
