Description
Second-year culinary student Sakai has always dreamed of opening his own little restaurant and being able to touch people's hearts with his cooking like his grandfather did. Except he's at his limit, fainting in class from overwork and fatigue from commuting three hours every morning just to get to school but there's no way he can afford to live closer.... Until his classmate tells him about an almost too good to believe room share nearby. And so begins the story of four misfit roommates.

Cute, but seems cut off in the middle.

It's a cute story with a few funny moments and lovable characters, and good art. I was actually invested in everyone's character development and struggles...and then the manga just ends.

There are so many plot threads left unresolved, that I can't help but feel that this was supposed to get a second volume but was axed instead. Yasuhisa and Tsubasa (the roommates), for example, read like they were set up here to be focused on in volume 2, especially considering how little is said about the drama between them. And the only one who gets any kind of resolution to his driving goal is Shouhei — not Kei, the one whose dream is given the most attention and is a major point in the plot.

What is there is a nice read, but it's impossible to see it as a finished story. It's a lot of setup with medium payoff.

I've always loved Junko sensei's works, they're funny, fluffy and has a nice simple plot. It's not too complex and less drama. Just like this one. The best scene is probably during the art class, it's just too funny to ignore! I love all the characters here, but I honestly want to know more about Honda and Tsubasa as well (hopefully there's a manga on them!). Overall, it's a very pleasant read. Gotta read this!

There's nothing really new in this, but the art is pretty and it's a sweet story! The only thing I wish is that we could have focused more on the friends who are implied to be interested in each other. Also, love the one's guys grandma - she was great (although sadly only seen briefly)!

Art: 9 (imo)
Plot: 7.5(I would have thought it would have been more cooking school, etc.)
Yaoi:7.8

Only 1 sexual encounter. Around 1-3 near experiences & 1-2 "lewd experiences. The hottest scene tbh was the modeling one"

I came into this series with high hopes due to my enjoyment of cooking and baking. I mean, who doesn't like looking at yummy food? Also because of that #cohabitation tag. At the beginning I had an inkling who the romantic interest would be, it wasn't blindingly obvious. · · · just kidding, that fantasy was shortly lived.
POST READ:
Uh, quite a few unresolved plot points as someone mentioned sometime before me.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
competition?
I feel like the author threw in a random plot point at the end.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
How he fed the actor when he was a kid. It seemed planned out from the point he said something about his parent's being divorced, but it didn't turn quite as the author anticipated it.
Overall, it's nice for a quick read. The author doesn't do much for the other 2 protagonists, but the open ended ending compliments the story, and trust me, I ABSOLUTELY DETEST open endings 99% of the time. Also some nice fujoshi jokes.
Ending Spoiler:vv

Riceball poisoning? A better option for that would have been a food allergy perhaps.

THIS IS MY OWN OPINION, TAKE IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.

It's only 8 chapters but the series is very unique, you'll at least love or identify with one roommate.

I love Sakai and identify with him, but I'm absolutely in love with Yasu

A fairly cute, lighthearted story. I enjoyed getting to know all the characters in the house. The situations were basic, but enjoyable. I would've been able to rate it higher if it didn't feel like it was cut short. It seems to me like the mangaka had to wrap it up prematurely since

there was never a conclusion to the food contest or the relationship between the two other housemates (never got to find out what happened the night of the goukon either when one came home with bruises).

Ahhh! Another Junko work that's great but was ended to quickly! I wish she'd written more about Tsubasa and Yasuhisa's story. But I did enjoy Shouhei and Kei's! It was a fun, short read with a good amount of smexy scenes in between. I really hope this gets another volume!

Good Story...

It was a good story. However, it feels... so unfinished? When I think about the title, "Recipe no Ouji-sama" I'm thinking about a story that takes place at a cooking school. Well, of course, the main character does go to a cooking school, etc.. However, it wasn't quite what I was expecting. They introduced to us, four characters, of which two of them are main. One goes to a cooking school, another one trying to be an actor.

I get it... It's about a guy who is trying to be like his grandfather and cook that meal that will make people happy, etc... The story was very normal. I mean, I like it. I like most of Junko's works. The plot was just not there, in my opinion. I would have loved to see how he did in the contest.

Then we have the other two. They don't have their own story, or book. They have a special backstory, but that's all we get. I'd love to see more of these people actually. I don't know if the manga got the axe, and she had to rush-job the ending, because it does feel rushed in the end.

But again, it was a good story.

To be honest I've always had a thing for food and cooking, so it might not be entirely unbiased of me to say I quite enjoy this manga. That said, this is undeniably a really cute and surprisingly funny story that could lift up your mood in various ways. Of course with the genres it's hard to be extraordinary but with this manga, I'm not exaggerating when I mean Junko-sensei is beginning to re-establish her place in my list of beloved BL mangakas. I know she's really popular with her light-hearted series and that's not a bad thing, it's just personal preference that I've almost never found myself truly connected and sympathetic with her mangas apart from probably only one or two series. With this however, I feel like I can start to expect more from her again (first and foremost a sequel/ spin-off/ doujinshi/ WHATEVER it is that is based on this manga) and to look forward to reading her new works. Hopefully sensei will continue to steadily improve her skills like this and come up with even better mangas in the future.
