I'm a fan of Mitsukazu Mihara's work. Her artwork is always so gorgeous and the gothic themes in her work are so well rendered. A lot of her stories contain more depth and emotion than most of the one-shots and short stories you might read elsewhere. But at my core, I'm a comedy lover. I love cute, silly romps. The more outlandish and silly the comedy, the more I love it. In other words, I like drama... but I tend to LOVE comedy.
So along comes Haunted House. Gorgeous artwork (as always), lush gothic theme... and oh, the comedy. I laughed out loud several times, which is enough to make me a huge fan of this work. All of the characters are lovable in their own ways, the chapters are neatly tied up little pieces of the overall story, the story-telling is well-paced.
And, again - the comedy! I really didn't expect such a "serious" mangaka to have such a wonderful sense of humor. If you're a fan of Mihara's, a fan of comedy, or a fan of dark comedy - this series is definitely worth checking out. I absolutely loved it.
i don't regret reading it but it's all because of the goth loli style actually...apart from that it's a bit rubbish (lol)...i giggled a bit with some jokes but you can definitely see that the manga is a bit rushed...the art is not bad, it's more than ok but i know mitsukazu mihara can draw better than that and you can see how simple the panels look and how non detailed...way too many times the backgrounds are all absent or you can just see some lines behind the characters (lol) trying to pose as backgrounds (hehe)..the story is way too simplistic in conception and execution but anyway you can read the manga if you don't have high expectations, like goth loli style and if you like the humour in addams family....basically it's addams family in goth loli style...the son of the family doesn't want to share the grim interests of the rest of the family and his family keeps messing his love affairs
One thing I really enjoyed were all the references to "horror" from other cultures besides Japanese culture(ie. the reference to Donnie Darko, chinese vampire clothes, and etc). It was fun recognizing the all the little things and it made it more relatable (although it's always great learning about Japanese culture and superstition). Story-wise, however, I felt that there was a little something lacking. This story is probably a parody, I realize, but still, that doesn't make the conclusion of the story any more comfortable. I feel that the story was developing a bit with each chapter, but not fast enough that we can believe that Sabato would "suddenly" mature. I also didn't feel as if there was a great lesson to be learned after the whole parody story: it's obvious that's what the manga-ka wanted us to know from the get-go and I didn't really need to go through the entire volume just to have that reiterated to me in word form.
I'd recommend this more to people who have read this author before and enjoy her stories and art; otherwise, I'd say read something else by this author first, because this probably isn't one of her best works.
is going on? what comedy? what plot? what is the point? so, we have a guy named sabato who has a dysfunctional family and he deals with it how? by complaining and whining. why cant he just love them the way they are? granted, this is a oneshot. but i still dont get what the point is. and i dont understand how this is comedy. i didnt smile once. but maybe that's because i don't know anything about black sabbath or what the hell any of the characters are talking about.
so, the girls the main character is interested in get some panels but then they just disappear and you never hear from them again. nice.
so, the two sisters are into voodooism and sabato is just looking for a girlfriend. nice way to spend you time, and nice story by the way.
