Don't be fooled by the beginning. The story is about the blond and the girl, the badass assassin is of lesser significance. I had hoped he'd play a bigger role, but so far he's only been like ... Sylar the boogie man. Kinda let down. I don't find the MC, Mushashi's "successor" to be interesting. Pretty sure it has to do with being led to expect something and getting something different. For me it feels like Area D, where you get the glasses kid in the beginning and someone else turns out to be the main guy.
