I watched the anime before reading any of the novels as well.
I've read almost two full light novels translated online at baka-tsuki.org and the anime follows the story from what I've seen, though I agree that Kazuma is darker in the novels. Even so, the anime has it's good points and should be given a watch since you can decide for yourself whether the novels or the anime are your cup of tea.

I really want to read this manga so much and I have looked every where for it! The anime was good and I've seen some scans too. Ayano is prettier in the manga

I watched the anime before reading th novels and the storylines so far seem pretty much the same though all the novel chapters haven't been translated yet. I prefer the novels to the anime purely because Kazuma is a much darker character in the novels and it works a lot better with his personality. It's a good story, interesting characters and an enjoyable read. The anime is also decent if anyone wants to check that out as well.

i havent read the novel yet, but im watching the anime at the moment....personally the story itself isn't amazingly awesometacular, but its not bad either...i've heard that the light novel is much darker than the actual anime, and its not PG-ish like the anime as well...it sucks that only like 1 chapter has been scanlated...its a nice read if you have nothing better to do
