one of the shittiest endings I've ever read, boichi is a great artist, but a terrible writer, you can see why in his recent works he only draws...

Fun to read with no brain

I actually drop it the first time I try. Because I know the story in this series is suck. All the plot holes he makes just to try to turn the story go unexpected but it makes no sense. But then I got free time, so I just try to read it with no thinking, I just enjoy the fight and the nude scene (his art is too good). So I got it finished in 3 days.
It is not a manga I want to reread. But this is definitely the manga to kill time.
So set a right mindset before read it. I warn you =)))

Solving literally everything with fists

From my experience with Hotel, I found that Boichi is actually a very talented mangaka. Stories in Hotel have depth and the art is masterful. This manga has only the latter (arguably worse) but it's extremely shallow. Some of the ideas sound clever and references to political philosophy make it interesting, but despite all these the protagonists simply solve everything (literally everything) with fists so you keep wondering what the hell all those clever-sounding principles are for. The plot is kind of repetitive and very reminiscent of refrigerator Shounens (you fight, you win, you get more things, more women falling for you, you become even more of a big shot, you face more formidable opponents, rinse and repeat). The porn is so pointless and out of place it's confusing. But man the action is so good at the end of the day you no longer gives a damn about all the crappy elements.

exploit porn

This must be the highest ranked crappy manga ever, because I can’t believe it’s on 8.2/10 even on mangaupdates.

It started off well with a copied plot from Sanctuary, showing the rise of a mafia group and the clash with politics and law, dashed with a love interest that promises some interesting conflicts in the future volumes.

I already knew it’s time to stop by volume 4. But pushed through for fairness.

This and realism go opposite directions as a hand of Koreans pick a Japanese as their leader straight off the streets and by some magic become the biggest criminal organization in Korea. I say by magic because we don’t see how they do it and we don’t even see they managed to do it, because they seem just as poor as before, excepting cases where they intend to inflate the estate market (lol!) and bribing politicians.

There’s also the harem side, since this is in its core a shoujo manga surpassed even by Naruto in quality, but it just adds to the ridiculousness of this monstrosity with grown and independent women getting in heat literally a minute after meeting Ken.

Every woman in this manga is stupid or a whore, and they’re not even trying to hide it. Our love interest is a police woman in the anti-gang division, and after about 15 volumes she goes to her boss to ask who the leader of the biggest gang in Korea is.

They made her stupid to justify a 180° change in the manga following the volume. Don’t get me wrong, she was already stupid and useless way before, but for her being the love interest, and the feel of the manga in the beginning, we only see her about 10 pages per volume till near the end. She is the daughter of the head of yakuza, an expert fighter, but she gets kidnapped and chained to the floor so that we can see her panties. After that she gets in a fight with another expert woman assassin and they cut all their clothes, including underwear (katana fight) and get so tired and sweaty that they can't fight anymore and lay down where Ken find them. Give these guys an award for impeccable script!

Every woman! We get the cop, the assasin, the daugther of a politician, etc. they are all stupid and would sleep with the closest guy when they get horny.

Rape is common and sometimes accepted, as the gang starts working with a politician that they helped rape his daughter. You read that right.
But maybe you want to see a woman getting raped with a baseball bat? Read this manga. Another rapist, the manager of a girls band, gets a slap on the wrist because he showed remorse. This guy has been raping every girl he managed and auditioned, but Ken saw good in him.

The hentai aspects in this manga could have been avoided.

It’s bad funny how this manga went on for 25 volumes with so many plot holes that it collapses on itself.

I could write a lot about what makes this manga bad. I’m only giving it a 2 because I like the ladies.

Porn with plot + a tad bit of ambition

Well...where to start. Sun-ken Rock is not bad, let's get that over with. However, it could've been much better if Boichi had decided to focus more on plot and character development and less on Porn.

While I understand that Boichi has a big obsession with...tits and the like, it's sad to see that this obsession ruined a big part of Sun-ken Rock. For instance, I actually liked most of the plot even if it was lacking in some areas. I also liked some characters, like Tae-soo, which I thought was pretty badass and deserved much more screen time. Why Boichi didn't discover that his own manga deserved much more thought than it was given, especially in the plot section, is a mystery to me.

What I was most disappointed in was probably:

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Tae-soo's outcome. Really? Put him into jail with a death/lifetime sentence? He was the most interesting character with a lot of depth and personality. *sigh*, deserved so much more. I wouldn't even mind if he was the main character.

Glad for Ken though, he finally got laid with Yumin. Felt like that's what the manga was really about. However, what the hell is wrong with that chick? The ending was not expected at all.

Overall, an ambitious idea (the plot) with, sadly, a poor execution. Giving it an 7 though for Tae-soo.

Why the mixed signals

When I read manga I expect the author not make the readers make them feel too manipulated. This author has good ideas with mafias and other dark themes. It just jumps to acting like a gag manga. Half the times are jokes half the times it's dark at the most inappropriate times.

Just when it shows something dark it adds a gag. Even then the art doesn't blend well with those gags feels way TOO out of place. The fact he wanted to add too much ideas, makes the readers feel disconnected with the work and alienates as, since it's hard to take it seriously with its mixed signals sad

Why the hell is it a gag comedy..?

I know i am being way too serious and its just a manga...
BUT this manga deals with extremely serious and realistic issues of the society i.e. underworld, mafia, sex trade, murder, prostitution, rape, slavery etc.
So in my opinion they should not be made little by adding gag comedy. A little bit of everyday fun is ok but to this extreme is not funny but repulsive.
HOW CAN I FUCKING ENJOY A JOKE WHEN A WOMAN BEING RAPED WITH A FUCKING BASEBALL BAT...it's not funny man, something is seriously wrong with these people..

to be honest, this manga has far too many fanservice scenes. the fight scenes are decent, the story was nice at first but at some point it turned out as a harem kind of manga in which all girls are in heat and all of them want to have sex with the main character. and the h scenes are so realistic, it's bothering me. don't have too much expectations while reading this.

Objectified women? How about all of the violence directed towards males? What about the stereotype of a brute, dumb male solving all his problem with fists? Lets look further - in most literature(any type of media, actualy) where someone dies or gets to suffer physical pain that someone is... yes males. When it's other way around and it's female suffering/die, somehow people get all bananas and turn into hypocrite saint Maria preaching about their moral superiority (especially if it's modern west we are talking about). Somehow I rarely see people complaining (not even noticing, at that) about that. Is this some sort of new mangina tactics to draw validation from women?
Men get their fair share of pain and problems and so does women. Putting one above other is stupid, something you expect from people who can't get their own lives together.

As for actual manga, I have mixed feeling and I will wait till it finishes before giving it a rating.
