Such a sweet bitter story that brings tears to my eyes. I have now read it twice and each time is just as breathtaking. May be a shoujo, but her situation, his life and the lives around them are all so layered with sadness and despair that its incredible. The setting is also fabulous as it shows the destruction of war. It's so sad and tear jerking that you must prepare ahead of time and get your tissues!
What a gem!
PS: I absolutely adored Matsuura, his darkness and bitterness is so intriguing, as well as his views on society. He sent shivers up my spine...

Why is the ending like that argggggggggh. The thing I didn't get is
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
why the hell didn't Chinatsu flipping tell his rich dad to not let him go into war ??
I really did enjoy this and I usually haate short manga but I didn't feel as though I was reading a short manga although I think this manga would of still been good if longer smile

The ending felt very predictable and rushed tbh and I knew that
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
when war was mentioned, their had to be a reason as to why it was (the mangaka wouldn't just throw that in outta nowhere -_-)
I loved the manga up until the end because I just felt like the ending was just thrown in outta nowhere and it just ddidn't suit the nice flow the story had going.I knew that the end would be like how it was when
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
:four years was mentioned...
and at the end I was left thinking "err...where's the ending, cuzz this sure as hell ain't it"

All in all i'd say good story, random/uneeded ending.

Oh and don't read the comment below me if you don't want the whole manga to be ruined :/

I really cried at the last chapter!!! I really thought that Chinatsu...okay, I won't spoil it for you so figure it out yourself. I was really happy with the ending. Oh the twins are so cute!! This manga is really a must read! The story is very simple, yet feels so tragic like. Now I can feel how those people in the olden days feel like when they go through this kind of hard times. It's so sad. Very sad! It kinda makes me feel thankful that there's no war now. Really, try this manga!!

A little too perfect maybe?

The only thing this story lacks in is in its flaws. The plot and art were used extremely well to embody emotions of the characters as well as the historic mood of the story as it unfolded. What stands out to me most is how much the story changes and how you can feel the main character becoming more mature - the time lapsing was perfect, not too fast or too slow. And I also liked that we get to see pretty much the full length of the characters' youth and happiness. In addition, I unexpectedly got teary-eyed near some sad parts and frankly the story moved me. I didn't expect it to because I'm personally not really into historical manga but the elements were presented in a very casual and realistic way that was never too much of one thing. In all, you could say the historic element grows on you the deeper you read on. However, the story was a bit predictable (I could pretty much map out every next plot twist) but it wasn't really a bad thing that things fell into their places either.

Rating: 9. Overall I personally wasn't blown away by the whole of it. I look back and only remember certain highlighted elements but not to the point where I would re-read it.
But I'd say its the perfect "romance/slice of life" for someone who wants a very clean and light read.

Memoirs of a Geisha much? lol LOVE at first read :-) I loved the history and the story and just about everything!! The art wasn't that bad either. But being the romantic that I am, I have to say that the story just about did it for me. I wish the story was a little bit longer, but I think that it was still good. Very satisfied with this series :-)
Read it!!

This manga my number one favourite manga! I've seen a lot of mangas, but no one made me feel such emotions. This manga is so beautiful, sometimes funny and realistic. I could felt what the character were feeling. I read it like 4 times, and i never get tired. Chinatsu for me, is the best male lead ever! He cared so much for Butterfly, the best couple ever!.. It made wanted to had such a beautiful boyfriend like him. You CAN'T not read this awesome manga. You won't regret it even one second. The last chapters were so sad, that i really cried and thought that people in real that has to live in war and suffer so much. Thanx so much for the scanlators for their awesome and great job. ^^ And there is the brother of Chinatsu who made me laugh so hard, love him! xD

The perfect romance

You can't get more heart warming than this. Butterfly falls in love with Chinatsu, a renowned tatoo artist. Together they form a committed bond towards one another. The story chronicles their love and struggles through the Japan of the 1940s. The depicted romance is deeply moving and filled with happy and tearfully sad moments. You get drawn into their surreal love as they evolve though the romance. My only complaint is that I wished this was longer because it's such a great read, I just didn't want it to ever end.
