Description
Not to be confused with "Usagi Yojimbo" by Stan Sakai!
The main character Udagawa Gosuke has received his father's dojo, mainly because his father and older brother were made to commit hara-kiri. He wasn't really supposed to get it simply because he's a second son. But due to the way his pops and brother died, he doesn't have a whole lot of self confidence, so he practices fencing day-by-day at a nearby dojo. However, because the people at that dojo are asses, he soon tries to invent a dojo and a style for people who just enjoy it.
However what really sets this aside from most shounen is that the main male and female characters are actually married. (At age 15 no less!)
The girl Utagawa Shino is the younger sister of his senpai, and is a bit...weird, to say the least. She makes rabbit masks to help bring in a bit of money, although to say that she's obsessed with rabbits would be an understatement. She claims it's because "the rabbits will someday reach the moon." When Gosuke invents his new dojo, he decides to make a style of swordsmanship known as "Rabbit Style Fencing."
I never expected this series to be so good. The story is told in a comical way, but behind the simplistic cover there is a lot of substance. It deals with a lot of ugly subjects but somehow isn't bogged down with melodrama, and yet still really touching when it counts. On one hand, it's incredibly cynical and depressing. I mean, how many manga series make jokes about the unjust deaths of one's family? On the other hand, despite living in such an ugly world, the main characters possess many very admirable qualities and all much more than what they seem, kind of like the manga itself. Their earnest feelings really reached me.
I'm pretty sure others will think there are flaws. But the beautiful simplicity and quirkiness of this series are a cut above the rest and it should appeal to many older readers who can understand the underlying themes. Give it a chance.
throughout my reading i squealed every other page because they are just too cute. the characters are standard, the plot is run of the mill, but the art and the execution is so perfectly synchronised with each other this manga become perfect indeed
This manga instantly caught my interests and it didn't disappoint. I found it to be a perfect balance of humor as well as romance. Also, the story is just serious enough for me to not find it as some random "Shounen" manga that has shallow plot. The only downside is that there is 10 chapters available...
I enjoyed it, but there are no recent updates of it being scanned of some reason, which has left me to feel a bit dissapointed because it had kept me intrigued. Yet, there is no recent scans of it.
Totally different from most shounen mangas - awesome read. The translation is not perfect, but what the heck, I can't wait for the next chapter to be released!
this... in my opinion.... doesnt seem to fit for a shounen weekly jump manga... since like half of those in it is crappy and those that are not often get low sales and then dropped..
this manga have the absolute best narration through my years of readin. The narration might seem to have tons of words... but thats absolutely awesome... i mean....its awesome therefore its awesome since i said its awesome i ought to be right and thus it is awesome... (wtf?!)
so far... only 5 chapters out... but with the 5 chapters.... i can say this manga is way better than all the others in shounen weekly jump... why?... cuz most of them sucks alot.... especially naruto, bleach, one piece, sket dance and dogashi kaden! also... wtf is that manga kochikame still doin in the shounen jump... i mean... it should be like old man jump instead....
anyways since i started talkin about shounen weekly jump for no reason at all.... let me point out some good ones bari haken (i wonder why da heck no group take that :/) hitman reborn d gray man Nurarihyon no Mago
I really like this manga, i like the way it's narrated, the way it shows some aspects of the era and the characters. As a shounen, one of the best ones i had read so far.
I’ve only read the first two chapters that were scanlated but I’m already hooked. It’s definitely not your average shounen manga. It shows both the good and ugly side of the bushi and their era without being too serious or glamorized, like in most manga. Both the main characters are cute and likeable too~ Read it!
