Welcome to Cromartie High—a melting pot of underachievers and overzealous bullies, where the fist rules, and the student body has the combined I.Q. of a rusty nail. After a whole lot of bad judgment and a little bad luck, Takashi Kamiyama is now attending this academy of dunces. Here, his only homework will be defending himself against the foul-mouthed robots, semi-intelligent apes, and masked villains that roam the halls of Cromartie High School!
The chapter numbers are incorrectly numbered starting from Volume 14 (the volume begins with chapter 267 even though the final chapter of vol 13 was 269).

well i read the first volume, and thats as far as i got, the reasons being: 1st. IT WAS NOT FUNNY AT ALL, i didn't even crack a smile over it... 2nd. even for manga, gag manga no less, the characters are just too stupid
i wouldn't recommend this to anyone, unless you have the comedy sense of a baby... 1/10 (it only got 1 because there is no 0)
one of the best gag comedy manga
now, i don't say this is perfect - far from it. there are some jokes that seems forced, some recurring characters that i just feel 'stop already!', loads and loads of story going to dead end or leads just forgotten halfway, but, BUT when the jokes work, which is about 90% of the time, it is the best laugh you will ever laugh until the next punchline come. the jokes are so damn hilarious my throat was sore from laughing. i did a 13volume marathon on it.
the best thing about the joke is that it is in 'gag' category, but it is the absurdness of the 'philosophy' or 'theory' these guys spouted, which, sometimes, are as close to truth as possible that you actually believe in it that when the gag punchline come, the jerk from the serious discussion they are having and the gag itself increase the hilarity of it all seven-fold. and yes, the seriousness of the art itself, with characters almost always looking to the upper left of the panel like some patriotic politician giving a speech contribute the the overall atmosphere of the somber meeting the absurd.
i recommended this to anyone, i mean anyone that appreciate comedy. from low brow gag with freddie mercury and the gorilla and high brow humour with the 'logical' reasoning by the five of four great ones and kamiyama himself, comedy lover of all range will fell in love with this.
First let me say it's hilarious. Hence the high rating I gave it. It does what a comedy should do. Except that...well I was reading it a few years ago and i remember I stopped because despite the fact that it was hilarious I got bored. It seems the type of series that I could go back to every few months and have a great laugh but definitely can't marathon, unlike some other comedies with more substance like Zippy Ziggy or Angel Densetsu.
Absurd Comedy at its Best
I agree with another reviewer, you'll either like it or you won't. Oftentimes the stories don't go anywhere (probably 90% of the time lol), and sometimes the punchlines can leave you pondering just what exactly is going on. While some may see this as a downside, I think it just adds to the nonsensical humor of Cromartie High.
Recommended for everyone. I'm a girl and I enjoyed it. Although there are rarely any female appearances in the story (except for Maeda's mom, who actually looks like him...) this doesn't really take away anything. In fact, that isn't even the most notable omission - we never actually see their teacher, even though 80% of the story is set in the classroom.
It's fairly consistent in the comedy, whereas some other series might start to lose steam around the fifth volume or so. ADV's releases have been good quality, so at least check out the first volume.
not for everyone
You will either like it immediately or dislike on the spot. Anyway, worth a try! For me, it was the first and I consider myself a fan, even going so far as to find corresponding anime and LA movie.. But it's really a manga format, in the heart of things, and it does an awesome job in the genre.
this manga is very funny because the artwork is serious but they do stupid stuff...
As funny as a recurring gag manga can get. Sometimes the jokes dont work, sometimes the punchlines are lame. But there's so much comedy gold in there that it's worth reading. At least if you have some Monty Python-esque sense of humor, you'll probably love it. And no, dont read GTO in stead. I dont even know how they compare. GTO isnt even a gag manga.
However I do think it loses its edge after a while. I'm convinced you can't keep up a gag manga for more than a couple of volumes; and Cromartie pulled it off for a fairly long time all things considered.

no comment. Just read GTO instead
I went into this expecting it to be halarious. But I was disappointed. It is just kind of dumb.. The only funny part was the Gorrilla. The art is terrible and it doesnt seem to have much of a plot. Pass it up.
