Description
Touma Sou graduated from MIT, but he comes back to Japan because he wants to know how it feels to be a high school student. On the other hand, Mizuhara Kana is a strong girl who loves sports. Together, they are partners in solving cases that happen around them.

So I read through a few chapters, and I thought "Well, the characters are cute, let's keep going. It seems fun."

Then Touma, who went to school in Massachusetts, was all "I'm seeing snow for the first time!!!"

And then I read Diane Butler's horrendous English letter.

And then I solved that "how tall does a tree grow" thing off the top of my head (as anyone with a basic knowledge of calculus could.)

And then I dropped the manga. xD

To be honest, I feel that a kind of injustice is being done to this manga with the comments. I suppose it depends on what you're looking for in manga, but in a detective/mystery manga I expect and am looking for mysteries that are solved. QED delivers this and there's no big fuss about anything.

as far as detective story go, it's okay. the evidence is just too shaky any good lawyer can overturn it, if only the culprit don't start confessing after the ball is dropped. and ya know, there are alot of child murderers lol...quite unrealistic. and i just can't accept important organization like the cia or a government seemed so careless...

the character faces all seem to blend together, interchangeable. it can't be help that there are different character for every case, but at least different hairstyle, but even that cannot be managed. somehow i am always irritated with mizuhara. she is just too airheaded, too stubborn, too genki for me. and too many abuse. if i was touma i would sue the ass out of her.

but good point for including variety of cases, not just murders. even if i say a lot of bad points, it is still worth reading, because sometimes the case, the notes, the additional info is quite interesting.

i completely agree with nugro guy below. i will only add some.

reading qed is like watching the beautiful mind, served in front of you the beauty of mathematics. seems unsolvable, and almost certain won't contribute anything good even if you're able to solved them. but it is undeniable they are captivating, fascinating, stupefying.

that's about half of the manga.

the other half is about simplicity. there is no exaggerated hatred in murder case. only reasonable but stirred with depth of emotion. reading qed never incite disgusted feeling by how the characters act. because we can somehow put ourselves in their shoe, albeit those simplistic art.

qed is mystery manga that is not so mysterious. its turns beautiful over time.

If you think this goes nowhere then Conan, Kindaichi and virtually every other detective manga are guilty too (during much of its life, usually only change nearing completion).

With this at least the characters are being developed and really good at that albeit slowly (you could tell how Touma definitely but slowly began to change over the course of the series, thing I never feel on Conan or Kindaichi), this has the effect of seemingly boring but I never feel that way whenever I read this manga and the characters keep growing on me.

Also this one does not exclusively revolve around murder and dead body, in fact as the series progress there are more and more interesting and/or quirky case with equally interesting resolution and trivia involving broad range of subjects other mystery series could only touch the surface.

As a whole one could regard this as a slice of life with a lot of interesting mystery and twist on it, both done very well. IMO, this is one the best in its genre.

This thing is good but also bad

the cases and characters are all interesting

but this manga doesn't have main plot, or even recurring antagonist, it can goes on forever but that's the bad thing

The weirdest thing is even after solving 60+ cases (in vol 35 now), some even in global scale, HE NEVER GOT FAMOUS!!

He never become a famous detective or anything, so his character traits never change from the 1st volume! He is always an MIT graduate and a high school student

Even after helping the police dozens time, he is never asked to help solving a crime, all his cases are either coincidently stumbling on a case or his friends from university ask for help.
There was also no explanation of what happened after a case, criminal got caught by deduction and that's it, was the news published on newspaper or any media is never known.

so we can summary all story in qed like this :
Coincidently stumble in a case > solved the case > bad guy got caught > done
most story goes like that and there is almost no relation between cases at all.

first time around it was interesting, then it's just bizarre and stoopid,
This is far cry from Conan and Kindaichi, figures...

edit : CMB is more interesting, and evolved version of QED

The closest detective manga I can relate Q.E.D to is Conan and Q.E.D may have some similar concepts to Conan but in Q.E.D the stories are more thoughtful, the characters have more depth, the annoying plot in Conan which detached itself mostly from the cases is nowhere to be found etc. I could go on and on.

I'll hold back on saying this is the best mystery manga I've ever read, because it's not. But it is a good mystery manga, and I do hold some respect for it. I never get into this genre.

I've only read the first volume. The cases are certainly interesting, and I really like the characters. BUT the killers rely far too much on an incredible amount of coincidence and on everyone doing the right thing at the right time, stuff they could never have predicted. It's not believeable at all! I hope it gets better as the author gets a better grip on what he's doing.

Man I remember reading this series way long ago. Almost forgot about it. I'd say that the plot is quite mediocre. The mystery itself is not that interesting. Touma is a genius who graduated from M.I.T. His ability of deduction allows him to solve the case easily but I feel something wrong within his characteristic. He seems lonely in some point. I read through vol.9 and there was no almost character development at all. I'm pretty sure this series will make you sleepy enough if you're not patient to wait for something interesting to happen.
