History (not a very accurate one at that), fairy tales (distorted) or shonen-ai? The main story would be down to around 3-4 volumes if it were not for the misrepresented side stories. One or two at the beginning were ok, but then I got started getting annoyed having to read all the other stuff. I would have preferred that more detail would have been added to the real plot-line instead of the stories, which were supposedly "lessons" for the listeners. Even in the final volume, almost as if to fill space to make it to a full volume, there was a story.
Credit, where it's due; the main plot was interesting, the characters engaging, the art good.

First off: The art of this Manhwa was very good, I always have to appreciate that. The overall storyline also entwined nicely with the stories told by the slightly altered Sheherazade. I was actually quite sceptical at first, since 1001 nights is one of thouse stories, that I have just had enough of. It was wrapped up really nicely in this case though, so i can definitely recommend it.

One snowy night, when I was sick with desperation and starvation after something to read, I stumbled into this wonderful manhwa with very high ratings and so-so coverart. Me, being the gullible person I am, decided to read this purely basing it on the ratings. I thought "Oh come on, bakas ratings isn't always non-accurrate and exaggerated. Let's give it a shot". Well...and so I did.

I've been disappointed before, but this one,...wow it takes the price. Not because the story is bad, but because of all the ignorance I had to read in 11 (?) volumes.

First and foremost, I can't believe that an author/mangaka/whatever decides to write or do something, without getting her facts straight? Half of the things that is written in this manhwa is NOT true and some of it gives a wrong impression about muslims, greeks, and basically the whole world. I sincerley hope, for everybodys good, that no one use this as a Historical wikipedia. Because if he/she/it did, it would probably be the end of the World. Not exaggerating.

The potratition of the story is so-so, unfortunatly not my cup of tea because I felt that it lacked something essential to make it good. Read it if you like, but don't expect much.

i liked the stories alright until i reached the "ancient Greece arc". The only accurate thing about this was the guys' names. Socrates was married and had a wife, Xanthippe, that bit him because he didn't go to work and they were penniless. Alciviades was a seme and a bi at that, he was friends with Socrates but not his lover. The mangaka shouldn't have picked that era to portay homosexuality in her manga. Not all ancient Greeks were homosexual, otherwise I don't know how my nation survived and is still here 2500 years since that time...
The art is ok but when you know history, european mythology and the like, it bothers you to read all that trash... I hope people don't read mangas to educate themselves on global history, all these stories are just fiction. What she wrote at the end, that she made a research and found out that Socrates was gay is wrong, this is so frustrating, I can't even... (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

If you did not know the original story then i could tell you a little. I will not put this into a spoiler as it's a part of my review.

The story begins with a persian king whose brother's wife is being unfaithful with his brother. He is even more shocked when he knows his bride is just the same and has her executed. He then assumes that all women are the same. From that point, every night he sleep with a virgin just to kill her in the next morning. He rather executes them before they try to cheat him. Scheherazade, daughter of a minister who provides virgin to the king, offers herself to the sultan. In that night she tells the sultan a story and does not finish it. Being curious, the king delays her execution to hear the end of the story. The next night, she finishes her previous story and tells a bit of a new story. Wanting to know the whole story, the sultan postpones her execution one more night. It keeps going like that to 1001 nights.

That's the original one. Now let me ask do you feel curious and want to finish this manhwa? The origin not only influence the sultan but also the readers now did you feel that strong excitement from this manhwa? If you do then that's my point and if you don't then that will be your problem.

First off, I'm not really into shounen ai. I usually avoid them unless I run out of yaoi no matter how good or how popular it is. Though I gotta say, the plot for most shounen ai are better than yaoi's.
Now back to one thousand and one nights. I don't know the original story and I did not plan to read it cause I'm not really into classics. But don't misjudge this. This is simply an amusing master piece with great plot, character development and art. The main story is simply addicting and you just wanna know what happens next. The mystery behind each character, or how the relationships will turn out to be. The stories within the story are just touching. Really great stories that just leave your heart pounding. There's some twists in the main plot that leave your jaw open. The whole story is an emotional roller coaster.
Overall, do not miss this manga. Do not judge it by its cover or how the story begins. Continue reading. You won't regret it.
Also one more thing, this manga isn't just BL love. There's normal romance going on as well.

Enjoy ^.^

I feel in love...in love with the characters, plot, and the stories within. Heed Suxinn's words this is much more than your average BL(not that BL is ever average). My point is to not miss out, because it's BL. Or due to any bias holding back from reading. The book is marvelous and a great read.

Before I say anything more, I just want to state that this manhwa is absolutely amazing. It's hands down one of the best I've ever read, regardless of genre and what have you. This is also one of the few BL mangas that I would recommend to those who are not fans of the genre. It's a fantastic work, and it is definitely a shame if you chose not to read this manga because of the characters' romantic interests.

The characters are definitely the driving points of any manhwa/manga, and this one is certainly no exception. The two main leads are very well fleshed-out, and their development is also very nicely done. The side characters too are also very real and wonderful to watch, with their own development to follow.

And, don't be fooled by the summary, this manhwa doesn't consist of Sehara telling Shahryar story after story in his bedchamber (though there is a story in each volume). The characters actually go out and do things that lend to their personality and ideals.

My personal favorite character development was definitely with the Sultan, Shahryar. The backstory the author gave him was, quite simply, the best I've ever seen in terms of a tragic character.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
His issues with women stemming from the death of his mother, and the dissonance between his love for Fatima and his father's words (that all unfaithful women deserve to die)... It was all so heart-rending, painful, and oh so real. I also loved that Shahryar accepts the fact that his past is no excuse for what he has done, that he really has to help heal what he has broken with his own hands.

Personally, my favorite part of this healing process was when Shahryar got tricked by his brother and allowed his city to fall to the invaders. It showed that, although Shahryar had gotten better because of Sehara's help, he still had not fully let go of his past. Again, I would like the point to the realism of his struggle, as the healing process isn't something that happens immediately but gradually and painfully. (Though, truthfully, I also hated this moment too because I spent the next three volumes yelling at the screen and waiting for Shahryar and Sehara TO GET BACK TOGETHER. /rage)

This manhwa also contains the best use of anachronisms I have seen in a manhwa to date. The majority of these anachronisms take place in the stories that Sehara tells. And, speaking of these stories, there are some truly heart-breaking and beautiful ones. There were two that I absolutely loved, and one even reduced me to tears. (Anyone who has read this manhwa will know which one I'm talking about.)

Definitely something one should not judge by first impressions (whether by the cover or by the first few volumes). It gets better, without a doubt.

I often see this one on download sites but i often ignored it for a lot of reasons. First, reading a lot of manga then switching to manhwa is kind of hard. bearable but a pain in the arse bigrazz Second it is so darn long [and maybe i prioritized Ze that time, dunno bigrazz ] and third, i thought it would just be a waste of time. Boy, was i wrong. I downloaded this one and i was really amazed by it! I've only read the first two volumes but i can see that the mangaka should be given an award or something! To instill a BL in a story that has been loved by many is genius. ~well maybe because i have a memory of watching the film with the same title so i fell somehow nostalgic so i am BIASED but hey, you wouldn't see stories like this nowadays because most of the mangaka seems to circle on cliche stories.

anyway this is good read! long but it is good.
