Entertaining read

This was gripping, I couldnt stop reading.
I love how I could skip all the martial arts and boxing explanations. Haha. This would be perfect as an introduction to fighting techniques.
I can't give this a 10, though, because the plot was kind of simple. It didn't have much complexity to give me a shock. And yes the characters could have had more depth as well. Although I suspect that that's how Japanese people think.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Overall, the plot was to beat your opponent, then your next opponent and so on. It would be predictable if it was any slower paced for me to notice. Also, the ending was kind of predictable as well. I am not a fan of ambiguities in endings. I wish I saw his future.

I feel like you could even write a sequel in the professional world. I would read that.

Since there's no negative opinions on this otherwise "perfect" manga, i'll be that guy.

I just want to add that i didn't hate it by any means, the fights were somewhat cool and all but my problem is with everything else; just saying that it lacked substance is not enought. The characters were freaking bland, every one of them, with MC obsession with Misaki being obnoxious at times. It's formulatic, full of tropes, and recycled characters - and i really mean it, there's no originality at all for any of them.

Art is average, although it does get better as it progess, and all that infodump about techniques and some obvious things, as well as mangaka self-experience annoys the hell out of me.

As a more personal touch i didn't like the ending, i get what it's supposed to mean, but i still don't like it. But that's really a personal thing

Amazing read. The art is fantastic and the story development is consistent. However, there are some alarmingly obvious plot holes. We have Izawa, who never gets stronger while Kamishiro gets on this power-up montage. Also, why did none of the characters ever call the cops to fix their problems, especially in the last arc? Overall though, it's really worth the read.

Stupid final arc.

The first ~14v (incl chapter ~138) are pretty amazing, and in contrast to some others I very much enjoyed the description of martial arts tactics, but the penultimate arc and the ending are both pure bullshit.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It's a drug war. The bad guy takes over the whole town with his huge team of... three fighters. Meanwhile, our protagonists dick around and let it happen.

Then in v17 Yuu's girlfriend Mai is taken hostage (fair enough) and Yuu reacts by letting himself get hit until he can no longer defend anyone. What is that supposed to accomplish?! Nothing, as anyone could have predicted beforehand. And then, that same scene STILL SOMEHOW TURNS INTO A ONE-ON-ONE FIGHT, and the tone completely changes from utter despair to standard fight, WTF.

Some better solutions: turning it into a hostage exchange (i.e., "release her or I'll kill you") or, better yet, CALLING THE POLICE asdf.

Basically, things go wrong in this arc because the protagonists act like idiots solely for plot reasons. (TV Trope: Idiot Ball) And then there's the insanely inconsistent tone:

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Drugs are destroying the lives of our friends! Mai was kidnapped! Let's respond with standard 1v1 duels, no permanent or lethal violence, and a friendly talk, standard nonlethal duel and absurdly amicable resolution with the boss responsible for the drug distribution. Yuu, what happened to your desire for revenge?!

And the final volume is no better.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Yuu wins vs. Izawa because he's powered up throughout the series while Izawa didn't become stronger at all.
And afterwards Yuu gets stabbed for no reason, and apparently walks away bleeding instead of calling an ambulance with the mobile phone he'd used moments before. And then we get a pointless 3-year timeskip for no reason. What kind of stab wound to the stomach takes three years to heal?

I had high hopes at the beginning of Holyland, which is more of a shame that it went so wrong after vol.5.
The setting is very original, a bullied guy who goes to the world of the streets at night, in order to find his own place.
This does not, however, work in the long run for the author, as it gets repetitive and the fights gets unimaginative. I was annoyed with the manual of martial arts that the authors peppers in every chapter, it destroyed the dynamic for me.
Also the characters are not very believable, Shin and Mai especially, are just too out of place with Kamishiro.

This story is amazing. Great character development and great supporting characters. The psychologic aspect to it is that you get to see the thoughts of the fighters and the main character which gets deep at times. The psychological part is great alone, but the MMA makes it amazing.

I loved this manga--the dark moments, the fighting, the uncertainty, all of it. Sure, it wasn't perfect, but it was interesting enough that I read all 18 volumes in one sitting (I started reading it a while back, dropped it, and then decided to restart it last night). Character growth is great, and I enjoyed the occasional narrative explaining things. It was fairly realistic as well, especially on points such as the asphalt and the importance of hand protection. Every manga has its flaws, but I'd be hard-pressed to point out any specific flaw that particularly bothered me.

Concerning the ending: some people have said they were not satisfied with it, but I personally thought it was great. I've always thought that it'd be difficult to determine how open-ended an ending should be, so I think the mangaka did a great job. TBH, by now I'm satisfied with anything that doesn't scream "axed!" though.

Oh man this manga....Just so perfect. The story, characters, and emotions are so real and are developed perfectly. I really loved how Yuu and Shougo's characters progressively found themselves. I also like the parallels each character gives to one another, plus the action is too addicting! And that plot twist ending, man I thought I was gonna be bawling for a while. I really like also how even the 'side-kick' -esque characters would have their spotlight, and there were really no minor characters, because everyone was together and united. Just bottom line everyone should read this, it goes beyond just a regular underdog story, has relate-able characters, and a story that's a Legend within a Legend.

I would have vomited blood if the penultimate chapter was the last chapter. You'll know why when you read it. I'm glad that the author didn't force a stupid tragic ending on us.

Holyland has a way to really grab you into its world. I am a girl, I hate fighting and violence, but I wasn't put off by this manga because Holyland focused on the search for self, the holyland, and not focused on the cliche shounen stuff such as power ups. I dropped this manga for about a week or two because I hate delinquents/gangs stories before picking it back again because I can't get its gritty atmosphere and dark tone out of my mind.

I have always hated gang, delinquents stories, but Holyland actually made me think the streets are cool. Like in Chapter 172 when the streets lead that King guy and close up on him so that Yuu and him could fight. Or when Masaki and Yuu are about to fight and you could feel it in the streets' atmosphere. It just makes the streets feel alive.

I think the way the author ended the story was so perfect, though he almost tricked me into thinking he was gonna end it in a blood vomit inducing way. Preceding every volume, we always have this monologue about how Yuu was there, without a doubt. To have the last chapter basically dedicated to demonstrate the fact that indeed, he was there is so perfect. The streets have always been mysterious so to end a manga about the streets with a legend was definitely the right choice.

Since this manga is about the search for oneself (on the streets), there are definitely character growths from almost all main characters. You won't feel disappointed. The one who transformed the most is definitely the protagonist, Yuu. He went from a scaredy cat, to accident hero/target, to dark avenger, to unstable fighter, from a fightened boy to enlightened man, then finally immortalized into an unmatched legend on the streets. What can you say, Holyland is great.

To sum up, Holyland is not your typical power ups battle manga even though it is about fighting. It's about discovering oneself, to find a place that is your Holyland. Definitely a masterpiece in the delinquents/gangs category, or very close it.

I really liked the way the author was able to show the growth of Kamishiro from the beginning to end. Also, the art and direction of the story was consistent, which is great. I appreciate how the fights are realistic and thoroughly explained, it added my understanding of what was happening. Additonally, the fights didn't grow in magnitude until the main characters had power levels of super saiyans. It was believable, while maintaining a feeling of tension in many of the fights. Thank you! One of the things I can criticize is the predictability and pacing of the story. At times, I feel like some scenes just drag on for a little longer than necessary, causing me to lose some interest...The art was also a little iffy to me, but that's a small detail. I am glad the characters don't look like clones of each other. To conclude, I overall found this to be a great read!
