Amazing!

This was amazing. The plot about being a mangaka is just pretty strong. Things are explained in details, yet it felt like reading a pretty light story. The romance was pretty good as well. Well, loved it!

I think that Bakuman was great and incomparable to Ohba x Obata's other works, namely Death Note. It's refreshing, inspirational and not too dramatic. It's well-paced and not too cliche though it can be repetitive sometimes. It's not your typical shounen. The romance may be boring and unrealistic for most but the story makes up for it(IMO).
Also, I know that each and everyone of us is entitled to their own opinion. But I think that calling any work, in which someone put blood and sweat to make, crap or worthless is very rude. Empathy is much appreciated. I don't really have anything against you guys so don't kill me, alright? Peace! dead

Story about how manga gets made
Rating: 10.0 / 10.0

We all like to read manga, but we never think about how it's made and how much effort was put into it. Well this manga is exactly about that and it changed how I read other mangas.

Although there is romance in this I thought the mangaka showdowns (especially the one between Ashirogi Mutou and Eichi) were a lot more interesting. And for the Mashiro-Azuki romance I didn't care at all. For me they were just two people who liked each other because they both had a loose screw in their heads (and Azumi's helmet haircut annoyed me to death...). The other romances were fine.

I liked how the mangakas in this were both friends and rivals at the same time. There's a lot of characters in this, a lot of them I loved, most of them I liked and some I wanted to stab in the forehead with a fork (*cough cough Miura cough*). My favorite was Yoshida though.

This is why I like manga so much, it can take some completely normal and boring element from daily life (like someone doing their job) and it makes it so interesting and engaging.
I'd recommend this to experienced readers, because to manga beginners it might seem long and draggy.

Splendid and fairly Unique!

Yet another manga from OHBAxOBATA (Death Note). I know what to expect when these two are together: a superb manga with superb art and superb story.

Obata's art here in Bakuman is marvellous, surpassing some of his past work including Death Note. The art style changes slowly and soundly as you go through the series. Although I like the style in the first chapters, which I think is more detailed and real, the late style of the manga is still amazing. Bakuman's story forces Obata to inevitably draw some different styles of manga art, which he does very well, showing his true talent of drawing.

Bakuman's story is just what I expect from Ohba. I love how it pulling romance and manga together. Despite being quite an unreal relationship, the series has a great part of love story. Every romance part is beautiful, and kind of cute. It might seem boring seeing the theme of 'let's grow up together and fulfill our dreams!', but it is so classic and emotional; Bakuman proves that with its story from the first to the end.

Every arc of the story has an appropriate gap between one another. Dramas are very well presented, and they are what make this story engaging; it focuses not only on manga work, but also relationships--both as best friends and lovers.

Bakuman is also the very first manga which tells readers how hard it is to get serialisation and keep being in SJ, and how the vote matters this thoroughly. Although there may be manga's about mangaka before, none of them was able to do this job as well as Bakuman; that's why I'm saying it's fairly unique. The story involves quite many mangaka. And here what is talented about Ohba is that he or she can produce many kinds of stories to be used as Bakuman mangaka's manga; they are all interesting and likely to be serialised if they are actually made.

The only thing that seems to annoys me is the ending arc (the very end I mean--maybe two last chapters or around that). I think it's somewhat too fast, making it not as good as it should be. It also give a feeling of the manga being forced to end a bit too quickly. The end parts should be longer, and the last chapter can be more beautifully ended with other kinds of scenes.

And the same for Death Note goes here, 'wall of texts' style appears in Bakuman; don't hate it and you'll find this very satisfactory.

Start strong but...

I was a few month ago when I bought the last volumn of Bakuman. I didn't feel so excited. I just thought that I had to buy it to complete this series. Reading this volumn didn't make me feel any better. It was just the same old pattern with the expected happy ending.
Today, I re-read the first two volumns of the series. They was so engaging that I forgot to study for the exam tomorrow. This series had a really strong start. A manga about manga, a close look into the industry, a realistic plot,.. everything was novel and brilliant. I didn't recall that it was this good. I finally realize that the following volumns, especially those last ones, went down a lot compared to its strong start. Some arcs were too long and somehow ridiculous, even repetitous at some points.
However, I still strongly believe that Bakuman is a good manga. Not only did it bring you enjoyment but also a deep knowledge about manga industry.

Could have been perfect

This manga is a victim of its biggest weakness. The combination of its strength and parts that were all over the place.
It is wordy. Lots of text. Which is great for engaging parts but it makes more boring parts downright painful some times.
And with the way it went all over the place even losing the track of main supportive cast... 20 volumes of the wordiest manga I remember. Could've easily lost 5 volumes.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Everything Miura touched turned to shit. Painful and frustrating arc. Too long and fruitless.

And the second half is the guiltiest of going all over the place
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Villain? Seriously? Ok, the first Nanamine arc was good. The second one was ridiculous.
Completely lost the sight of their goal, ideas like Mashiro learning to draw faster lead nowhere, Kaya and Azuki almost disappear and their goals only get mentioned as a reminder that they are actually there.
Shota with a dog disappears. Would've loved to see him working with Aoki. They had such a fitting characters.

Tempo(manga time per volume) is inconsistent and some of the stretched out periods overstay their welcome.
Still 8. Might be to generous though.

Masterpiece

Greatest piece of story-telling ever created. It may be an exaggeration for lots of people, but no matter what I read, what I watch, nothing captivates me to the same extent that Bakuman. does. To those of you who find aspects boring, I understand that it requires patience and I understand that there are parts that are repetitive... name any Shonen manga in which there aren't, but the only time you'll be wasting on this masterpiece, is the time taken when flicking from one page to the next. This is more than a ten. This is the kind of story other Mangakas aspire to.

I rather enjoyed shounen manga that wasn't typical battle or harem genre.
Characters were good for most part, especially mangakas were all great with some depth.
Art was from pretty good to excellent, most because i like the style.
I felt story as too short (i wish epilogue to be published someday) but better quit when you're ahead
and not dragging series meaninglessly.

Saying a lot and saying nothing

What the first volumes had was excitement -- I will always love the scene in which editors and authors face off. The latter half tried to hold on to the momentum with limited success.

Bakuman endevoured to talk about writing, but without anything worthwhile to say, and beyond the reality of the current manga publishing industry, nothing interesting either. By the double digits volumes Bakuman has resorted to character posturing and tired speed lines. Dialogue suffer the same dilemma, saying a lot while actually saying nothing.

When they stop being underdogs, how do you make readers continue to root for them? Not by demonizing others is a good step. Focus on character development, maybe, because *there was none*.
