1990s Heartbreaker Saitou Chiho.

Rating: 7.0  / 10.0
Having enough read mangas of different genres, but for romance not many broke my heart like Chiho did with her grand schemes of history and music aesthetic.

Both Koto and Sagitto didn't really deserve my attention thinking the world revolved around themselves only. The whole Kodoin cool family on her mom's side sure deserved more: Masaomi, Ryuikki his cool brother, their dad, and Hanako who had brother complex at last that actually tried save her bro Masaomi from such angsty story.

Masaomi reminded me of other Chiho characters from later stories of hers, mostly like Mikami Gen in Kanon (1995). I'd like to take these guys...T.T

Masaomi deserved better

As with all of this author's works, the plot had promise. The mc starts off looking like the ideal independent and strong heroine, but her actions don't reflect that. And of course, you have all the love interests which are so predictable the moment they're introduced.

Koto is the true definition of a super dramatic shoujo character: romantic fantasies, love at first sight with just the one person you shouldn't love, and a sad backstory. I don’t hate her, but nor do I think she is the best representative of a ‘strong’ character.

Sure, if you want to be romantic, Koto x Sagitto is beautiful, great story, but that still makes Masaomi into the villain he didn't deserve to be. Of course Sagitto had his good points, and it's so understandable for a shoujo mc to be in heartbreak when her ideal love story doesn’t work out.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
whether she wanted to or not she did marry Masaomi after Sagitto was presumed dead and was ready to become his wife, but then on their very wedding night when she goes looking for a doctor for Masaomi she finds the not-so-dead Sagitto and forgets all about her newly wedded husband's illness.
I got really tired of K x S after that.
If this manga was longer, the author could've looked into the complexities of the Kidoin family, and perhaps even more involvement from Ryuichi - who really sat on the sidelines in the middle block of the story, which is quite a waste of such an intriguing character.
Of course, Masaomi really got the short end of the stick, R.I.P. when you realise that Koto and Sagitto is the main pairing but

Koto marries Masaomi so the only way for the two to be together is Masaomi’s death… in the near future anyway…

Selfish lead characters :(

The story would've been more charming if the main couple grew out of their selfish wants. Since it is rather a character-driven plot, it is fair that it should be the characters to carry the weight of the manga. So let's talk about them a little shall we?

First, Aoki Koto is bubbly, energetic, and hard-working. She doesn't want to be tied down by anything and does what she wants to get what she wants. However, Koto is impulsive, thoughtless, and ultimately selfish when it comes to love. I'd be more than happy to be friends with someone like her, but I'll feel sorry for the men she's romantically involved with.

Next, there's Sagit/Sagitto (whatever the spelling is, I don't care), who turned out to be just as reckless and selfish as Koto - perhaps even more so. He knew the grave consequences of stealing away someone else's wife but does it anyway, with stupidly flashy methods I might add. There was little to honor in his actions, and that pissed me off. He may be an illustrious soldier and awe-inspiring patriot, but as a love interest, it's better to steer clear of this guy.

Then there's Masaomi, who is possibly the more decent in terms of being a 'character'. I know, I know, he's an archetype, is also selfish and full of pride. He was raised to be a puppet by his cold (but badass) father, never understanding things like love.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Then Koto comes into his life and he figured he might get a chance of learning/experiencing even more things. He begins to rebel against his dad and unknowingly falls in love with his fiancee - aware of her strong love for another man. He tried to be considerate but that proves futile (coz we know how idiotic the main lovers are). In the end, he was broken by the betrayal, snaps for a bit, but ultimately let's her go. Then we learn that he was struck by a terminal illness.
I know he was an ass, but damn, give this dude a break.

*sigh* Now, for the side characters, well, they're just meant to be in the background so this'll be short. Kidoin sister is a bitch, Kidoin brother is decent but weak, Kidoin father is badass but is an ass, Aoki father is weak, and pretty much everyone else is weak. Well, to be honest, I have a soft spot for Diana despite her near-nonexistent screen time.

A Cute/Romantic Story

I really love the couple (Koto and Saggito) since they are so cute together. The art kind of reminds of Red River so I really enjoyed the story. Too bad Koto was betrothed to Masaomi or Saggitto and her could have gotten together sooner. I'm just glad Koto realized she wanted to be with Sagitto (late into the story though).

Koto isn't as horrible as everyone says she is. She is not the best heroine, but she not doing anything terrible. I think a lot of the readers are mad because the males are unusually likable. The noble soldier and exotic rebel not hard to make a girl fall. I usually don't rate a manga unless it's an 9 or 10, but this had the potential to be. It had all the right cues but it didn't deliver.

1.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Koto met these political figures from both sides. The author should have used this to make her an asset, but they just temporarily saved her.
2.When Koto married her husband they should have had sex.
3. Masaomi and Koto should have had more moments
4. When I found out Masaomi was going to war I thought "CHANCE!" It was set up so nice, but it flew by.
5. Then, Masaomi is terminally ill(poor guy) another chance wasted.
6. Masaomi and Koto never communicated. As a married couple they should have at least supported eachother whether debt motivated, arranged, or contract.
7. Koto should not have been so rash. Love blinds. cripples, and kills...it does not control. I can't hate her for that, though. So many shoujo girls have done so much worst. Damn it anime girls
8. Why...?

Despite all that there was some very enjoyabl moments

I usually don't comment but Koto is a terrible main character... I STILL don't get how they all like her -_- I think I only finished it because of Masaomi, who I think totally got shafted. I mostly agree with the the previous comments below mine. I feel really bad for Masaomi...

I wish he doesn't have to die... by that I mean in the sequel but he does say he's sick or something at the end of this series

Love Waltz, Dislike Koto

Wow! Koto has to be the most completely unlikable main character I've ever run into. She's engaged to marry Masaomi but gets involved with Sagitto, even knowing that he's is technically an enemy spy. A normal person would call off the engagement at this point, even if it was arranged by their parents, but not Koto. She marries Masaomi anyway but continues to have her affair with Sagitto on the side, while going around acting like she's the victim in all of this. I don't really think much of Sagitto either as he knows she is engaged then later married to someone else. If it wasn't for Masaomi, I might have not even finished reading this only due to hating everyone else. Overall, this is a really great manga even if most of the characters are not all that likeable.

Horrible!

This story has the most horrible heroine I've seen in any manga. She doesn't think of or give a damn about anyone except herself in the whole story.. She marries one guy, then dumps him and goes off with some other guy that she professes to be in love with, but doesn't spare a thought for her husband.. I keep wondering what both guys saw in her to even like her in the first place. I'd have been happier if the story had ended with her dying somehow.

Wow, I love Saito Chiho, but I totally hated the heroine in this. She was so incredibly self-centered that I wanted her to die a horrible death. This story seemed like a wish-fulfillment fantasy a twelve year old spoiled brat would have, where everything revolved around her. I rated this two instead of one because I liked Masaomi and his brother (who stars in the oneshot Lilac Nocturne that I loved), and the art of course was lovely.

I found this manga really addictive and it's got a great plot. It's true what someone commented, that the characters don't develop a lot.Still,it's not a long series so that's okay. The art is beautiful and it's got enough romance and history. If you like those themes it'd definately recommend this one smile Can't wait to read the sequel!!!!!
