This is a story about aliens. Yes, aliens. Choi Sera houses displaced aliens in her home, where they all pretend to be UFO fanatics in order to explain their eccentricities. Sera’s job is to teach these aliens how to live in human society—not that difficult on the surface, as they ostensibly look like humans (except for the three fingers on each hand thing). They look normal, and they can communicate with earthlings via a translator that looks like a hearing aid, but can they act normal?
The answer to that is a resounding no. Watch as Sera tries to school the emotionless twins, Seunghyun and Seungmin (really clones) on dating (with disasterous results), tries to keep Hyunwoo out of trouble, and keep them all from being taken away by the UN alien hunter who’s on to them. This manga is such a nice breath of fresh air, while short and simple it also manages to be so unique and also very fun. I can see how some people may not like this manga, those who want a bit more of a deep plot, and there were a few times I would have liked to see the plot develop a bit more. But as it stands I really like this manga.
Plot- The plot is quite simple, and while it hints that it could become a deeper and more intricate plot it stays simple. It’s still a nice plot and has the feel of a slice of life and less of a sci-fi. There are some hints at a deeper plot, more troubles, and a more complex plot line but that’s all they are, hints, and the story itself doesn’t delve into them, but they aren’t cliff hangers either that leave you wondering and agonizing over them. So for some this might be a turn off as the story begins and ends really where it began.
Characters- The greatest part of this manga, the characters, they were all so different and unique and it’s really quite hard to not like at least one of these characters! However I really felt they could have been developed a lot more, we got hints at their background and hints at character growth but in the short time of the manga we don’t see those hints becoming more than just hints. The characters are still great even despite this and are quite a fun crew to read about.
Art- The art is very nice, the only complaint I have about the art work is some of the background, they are pretty much just pictures blurred so everything looks a bit more stenciled with heavy tones (this might not be what most of the backgrounds are but that’s what it looks like) and its very jarring to see these very life like images and then see the obviously drawn character, especially when they are standing in front of those backgrounds. While this doesn’t detract from the artwork of the characters or the story in general it interrupts the flow of the paneling just a bit.
Other- I really enjoyed this manga, its fresh and very unique. I just wish it went on longer, there was so much that could have been fleshed out, so many plotlines that could have been expounded upon and characters developed. Even so as the manga is right now it’s still very good and I recommend it.
This manwha is so adorable! The art is crisp, and the characters are engaging. I couldn't tell you who's my favorite because I loved them all so much, but I felt a particular affection for Sera. She's your typical "give-it-your-all" manga-girl, only she doesn't always succeed. You definitely get the sense that she's in way over her head.
The biggest downfall of this manga is its lack of plot. It tried to have a plot, it really did. But it's mostly fluff. Either way, I really wish this manwha was longer. It just kind of cuts off at the end.
Overall, this was an excellent comic, and I'd recommend it to most people. It's a very fun and quick read.
This series is so cute. The characters and story are very refreshing, and worth bearing through the end. Or rather, the total lack of an ending (it just stops). Number one on my list of "series I wish had a sequel". So cute, so cute...
Okay, to get it out of the way: this manga ends in the middle of a storyline. By the last chapter, nothing is satisfactorily resolved: The "Children of the Mother" plotline never truly gets started (let alone concluded), and few mysteries about any of the characters or their pasts are solved. There's even an author's note at the very end confirming the obvious: Safe Again Today was intended to be a much longer series but was forced to conclude early.
So why bother with this series if the ending is certain to disappoint you? Because for such a short series, all the characters are charming and distinctly rendered--you can instantly tell what kind of personality each one has. There's something loveable about each one, from Hyunwoo's blanket fetish to the perpetually good-natured clones, the characters draw you into the manga. The story is entertaining too; though in its begining stages, the plot seemed to hold a great deal of promise, and there were enough mysteries to keep me interested and wanting more. And in general, the gentle mix of humor, slice of life situations, and mystery is well done. Plus the artwork is pretty. And finally, Safe Again Today is only 2 volumes long. A bad ending doesn't feel like such a slap in the face if you haven't invested much in the series.
So no, we never get to see a relationship actually develop between Hanrim and Sera (which I was fine with as Hanrim is a jackass) and we never find out the truth about Jaemin's identity, but even for all that, this manga still holds enough of a charm that I've found myself rereading it a couple times since finishing it. So long as you go into it not expecting anything from the ending, this manhwa is worth trying out.
Er..what happened? The foundations for what promised to be a very interesting story had all been set into place - an interesting take on aliens, sympathetic and lovable characters, interesting storyline - but for some reason the author chose to end the manga prematurely. On the other hand, if you're after a light-hearted and feel-good manga, then this is for you.
I loved this one so much! Very good art, cute characters, very likeable^^ The story was good too, unique, and nicely done. It was suposed to be longer... Shame it wasn't>< Hope it'll have a sequel because the end was really abrupt, and ended like another chapter..
=) i have one of the world's largest fears of aliens, but this series helped me a bit to get through some rough nights. *will freak out at times and won't be able to sleep and will cry and pray for hours to be able to get to sleep and get rid of that scary feeling* it was funny and stuff too. =)
It's a fantasy slice of life story, that just deals with aliens. It's pretty lighthearted and if you read deep enough, there are actually morals in the story. And the art is quite unique. The ending was typical of a slice of life, it was open ended and hinted at future adventures. And yet, I still love the series.
It kinda had the potential to be far more entertaining and was rather interesting for quite a while: especially the stories about the various alien countries/planets, the agency and MS. However, it was really disappointing how the story ended, without delving much into the various characters' lives or pasts.
It was also frustrating how it hinted at various sub-plots and potential character developments but never fleshed them out. Hence, it feels rather incomplete and as a result of the "abrupt story development and sudden ending", I think it deserves a 7 at best.
(Update: Yep... such open-ended endings are typical of slice of life but they also often have some sort of closure too.)
