Description
In the immediate future, a giant meteorite has collided with earth. All living organisms, including mankind, have been wiped off the face of the planet. The government, who had foreseen this outcome, took measures to counter the worst-case scenario. In particular was Project “7 SEEDS”, in which five sets of seven gifted young men and women were carefully selected and placed into teams (Spring, Summer A, Summer B, Autumn and Winter). Each participant was then put under cryogenic sleep in hopes of preserving the continued existence of mankind.

When those men and women awoke, they found themselves suddenly thrust into a cruel world. While bereft and grieved over forever losing their loved ones, they sought to find ways to survive.

7 Seeds won the 2007 Shogakukan Manga Award for shoujo manga.

Masterpiece!

I read this after I finished Basara and I would like to say that these two are masterpieces. Both Basara and 7 seeds have strong story, plot, and characters, which is something you rarely seen on manga. I can understand people who doesn't like 7 Seeds because of the art and I tell you what: if you like manga in general and do not really mind what really happen on it, then you can skip this but if you like quality story, you definitely have to read this.

I won't repeat what others have said about this series. Tamura Yumi Sensei is a great writer (I have read the author's other work - Basara) and should this series came out as a light novel it will still be great (although manga can still depict it better and tbh I don't dislike the art) cause of it's strong storyline.

The best shoujo out there, unknown

I read Basara before I read this one, and I loved it; it's another one of my favorites. I decided to check out 7 seeds as well and at first while reading it I thought 7 seeds wasn't as great as Basara was. The "main character" was really weak and timid and showed no good traits necessary for a survival manga. Boyyyy was I wrong, once I got to the 2nd volume I realized it doesn't have a set main character, but different POVs and arcs that help develop into the mystery of the 7 seeds project. I made the foolish mistake of comparing it to Basara when it's like apples and oranges. As I continued to read it I just devoured all the arcs and finished 12 years of it into about one week. It was an incredible ride to read and I realize how well the characters all develop and the growth and maturity they exhibit throughout the manga.

While sometimes I find the characters irritating,

and sometimes you cry your heart out when you witness death scenes and lost of beloved ones, which is prominent in many arcs

Overall great series, and a highly underrated josei that doesn't get mentioned often with the greats.

Edit: So after catching up with the Japanese releases, I'm reaffirmed that 7 seeds is really the best, underrated series out there. It's a shame that it isn't really popular with International audiences (I think a lot of shoujo/josei fans are put off by the plot while seinen/shounen fans are put off by its artwork :'/) Even really minor characters are given some (if little) form of development where we get to know a little bit about themselves and they stay in the background. While I'm unsure of how the ending will come I do have faith in Yumi Tamura to not screw it up especially since she took the time to flesh out so much of the world and its characters.

Despite the lengthiness of the series, it really is well-worth read.

The whole story is a masterpiece!
there's action, romance, adventure, josei, seinen, shoujo, you name it! it's both great for the male and female audience. The plot is very strong, never did I get bored or skipped scenes or dit I get annoyed (some shoujo manga really push it)

I really recommend this one! You won't be wasting your time.

I picked this one up very reluctantly, expecting to hate how old the art looks (judging by the cover)....but i was given a pleasant surprise after persisting through the first couple chapters.

This series has a whole cast of main characters who I love and adore with all my heart. I usually only end up loving one or two characters from a manga... but not this time! I especially love Hana, an energetic and charismatic tomboy with a kind heart. Although the first few chapters are slow as we only focus on the beginnings of Team Summer B, the story soon reaches proper pacing with the arrival of many other teams. It gets exciting from there.

I also love the plot of surviving in the wilderness with limited resources. This manga depicted all the issues pretty well--or at least much better than what I've seen in other manga of the same genre.

The character development is also amazing here, especially with Yuki? from Team Summer B, who goes from a passive person to someone gradually more assertive. Her growth is very realistic, and I deeply relate to it as I have gone through the same changes.

The art is more old-fashioned, but you get used to it after a while; it won't be a problem because the plot is just that good.

Anyways, I recommend this manga to anyone who loves survival type stories and enjoys intellectually stimulating scenes.

Tamura Yumi's BEST one yet (IMHO)

To all you Naysayers, you wouldn't know a good manga if it came and punched you in yo face. The development and depth of each of the multiple characters is so unique and unparalleled to any other Manga that I have read. It's a story that will keep you on your toes. Do NOT get put off by the art, because you'd be missing a masterpiece. It's a story to savour and appreciate. It's got the right dose of every genre and this is definitely one of the only pieces of work to have made me retain my interest in manga. Read it, if you haven't yet!!

Despite the illogical reasons used initially, there is value in this story

It is hard to understand a character, and take the story seriously, when a character confidently denies the death of a loved one. There was no way i could understand or accept a rationalization that far surpassed reason. You could say the characters were so in love they were in denial or deluding themselves, and that they could only hope. Aside from this aversion, the development picked up after some volumes. There are many valuable struggles and they become more complicated as the story goes on. The value of love is a major topic so far in the story, and i don't mean infatuation or attraction, but love, as a necessary requirement for human growth and success. Aside from love, you could say the story is about how to live well, by facing ones' reality. It's about judgement, making choices, and acting decisively even when in fear. It is wonderful to see the characters learn in the environment they are forced to cope with, and i look forward to it in every chapter.

Amazing character development

At first glance, there is a lot that can put a reader off from reading 7 Seeds: the story initially starts with the most annoying and incompetent team. You can't tell where the story is going. And you might initially be really put off by the art (though in my case it really grew on me later on).

If you persist however, you will eventually be rewarded by one of The best character development I've ever read in any series.
Ones who initially appeared as losers either apply their existing competence or develop new ones, taking on surprising roles within their group.
Ones who initially appeared as stuck-up and dictatorial later mellow up, and you learn how surprisingly responsible they are to their group members.
Ones who initially prided themselves as elites realize that they have been blinded all along, and learn to respect those who they had scorned.
Those who despaired over this situation learn to accept it and live in this world, and even love it.
And as for the ones responsible for this project, appearing as the epitome of all cruelty, you learn of their fate and can't help but respect them for the dedication they put in until the very end to ensure the survival of the race.

In fact, that initially "annoying" team probably has the most amazing character development of them all. The characters all evolve as individuals and as a group, as each challenge and each encounter polishes them into a new person, and as they both set aside their differences and make use of them. This is a slow, rough and sometimes painful process, both for the characters and for the readers, but the journey is well worth it as the results gradually emerge. In-between, the author adds in some fascinating themes, including politics, thoughts on life, training and survival, the environment and others, and although they are not always completely realistic, the author shines in how she uses these to bring out the humanity of the characters.

This isn't a series that will provide you with instant gratification. But if you persist, you will be rewarded with the joys equivalent to seeing plain seeds in dirty soil bloom into a beautiful garden.

I wish people would stop comparing it to Basara though.

This manga is awesome. I was hooked since the beginning even if I didn't like the art and the first main character at first. All these problems disappeared in a second. I couldn't stop reading it and I spend all night awake until I could finish all translated chapters.

It is very different from the other shoujos. We don't see much romance and that's what I'm really looking for to happen but it is great. I think all comments above have said enough about the history. So give it a try, you won't regret.
