This is one of the best yaoi mangas I've read, and I've read a LOT. It's very unique in its entirety, ofc if you break it down into parts you can find others with a single aspect but none that offer up such an amazing blend of sub-genres; yakuza, childhood trauma, rape, abuse, learning to love, severe masochism, rising to power, just so much awesomeness <3(if you disagree please link me to others like it because I'd love to read them!) **Fair warning, this manga is pretty 'dark' so if you're looking for a happy ending, warm and fuzzy feeling, cheerful yaoi manga you've stumbled upon the exact opposite** but, I think it's really worth reading even if this isn't your normal cup if tea. My only regret when it comes to this manga is that I found it so 'early' and it doesn't seem to get updated very often; I'm very impatient and waiting for more chapters to be released is so hard! I've already reread it four times now.

I've been reading this manga for years. I just hope I don't die before it's finished. I love this story so much. Yashiro is my son! He's so strong and beautiful, he deserves happiness and love and everything good. I love Doumeki as well, he loves Yashiro, everything he is. He's willing to anything, he's so special. This heavy feeling won't leave me.

I can't stand to read unfinished mangas because at the end I'll want more and will have to wait and all tension and interest may fade with the months and years of waiting.

Am at vol 4 ch 17 atm.

This title builds up a good set of characters over time and develops depth for at least the two main protagonists. The tension between them, that they're partly unaware off yet, kept me reading and I'm so curious when, how - or if at all - it'll resolve.
I'm no fan of yakuza stories at all but the chars keep this one rolling.

After reading this for three years and continuing, i need to re-explain my adoration for it. Oh Saezuru. How this manga is so fucking fantastic. It's gotta be one of the best yaoi manga out there because of the depth of the characters and the story itself. It's extremely gritty, agnsty, heartbreaking, and truly a gem. Yashiro is such a complex character that has so many issues because of his tragic past. He's the kind of person you can feel pity for, yet can also be despised due to his actions. Personally, i think he's brilliant. He has developed a lot over the series and seeing that change occur is really beautiful, especially his relationship with doumeki. Doumeki is a great character, not only because of his loyalty but because he is equally as flawed as yashiro. These two are so broken and work together in such a way, that it's honestly one of the best relationships i have ever come across. You can definitely tell that these two main characters, do in fact, have some kind of strong connection towards each other. The symbolism and the art is also magnificent. I can not explain my love for this series. Just read it.

It's been two years since I've read this manga, right around when DP's releases had stopped.
Recently, I have decided to catch up. And I was just mesmerized, to the point where I've reread it fully the next day.

I'll put this in spoilers, just in case.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I've seen someone compare this to the Finder series, and as much as I love it, this comparison doesn't do justice to the complexity and portrayal of the characters in Saezuru.
I've also seen some completely dismiss this manga on the grounds of the "uke" sleeping around while the "seme" just watches. The problem with this comparison, is that there's so much more to these characters than just their roles in sex.

Yashiro, a damaged, long suffering person whose mind and body were twisted by years of rape and abuse, has found satisfaction (not happiness nor peace) in his position in the yakuza. The only person he's ever loved, does not love him back
His experiences, instead of repelling him from it, had made his body depend on sex.
That's what he knows and enjoys. That's how he fills the void he doesn't let himself feel.

Doumeki, who is tormented by guilt over not being able to protect his sister, then by letting Yashiro get hurt also cannot be defined by merely wanting to put his dick in a particular guy's ass.
He's scared he will become like his father. He's scared he'll hurt Yashiro even more, or let him get hurt. He's forced to witness how the men Yashiro has sex with hurt him, once again being unable to do anything, because that's what Yashiro wants and enjoys, a man who doesn't understand nor indulge in "regular sex", let alone relationships.

Doumeki is first attracted by Yashiro's beauty, but develops strong respect for the man who's in charge of a Yakuza branch. Despite his promiscuity and sexual preferences, Yashiro is well respected by his loyal subordinates, for his wits and unforgiving nature. He clearly knows what he's doing. Both men gradually open up to each other, which is amazing to behold.

And that brings me to another point - the plot behind the yaoi (which is hot beyond belief).
I'm unfamiliar with how the yakuza works, but this manga gives me the feeling of realism, despite some far-fetched looking points like all the tolerance for gay sex and bonding. Maybe they're like the greeks? I can't even begin to guess.
Either way, the conspiracy and battling for domination plot lines are very compelling and I enjoy them a lot.

Besides wanting Yashiro and Doumeki's relationship to advance further (although I'm not sure how plausible that is), I also really want to know how things will develop with the rest of the story.

I don't think this will end well, and I don't think such a story should, but oh, how I want it to.
I want Yashiro and Doumeki to experience happiness and peace, but is it really possible in their world? I hope for it, so so much.

I don't remember investing myself in this way, let alone a yaoi manga.
Yoneda Kou sure knows how to spin a web of intrigue. I find myself longing to read more,
to experience more of this story.
I find myself hoping for the best, even though I'm quite sure it's impossible.
Seldom do I feel such longing towards anything and I can't wait to read more.

I'd like to add, that the side characters are very interesting as well,
but I think one has to experience them in context.
Same goes for the wonderful humor that is thrown in quite often. From the lewd jokes to the expressions. I went from heartache to laughter within minutes.

The one shot prologue was amazing. I am not even into yaoi but it has really touched me. The emotional thread is wonderfully woven. Another reviewer was right, beneath all those 'filth' and darkness is tenderness.

Saezuru is basically a story about two very different, broken people who find in each other something precious. They're both slowly fixing the other (and not through rough sex, as usually happens in yaoi). It's full of melancholy and sadness (especially if you include Yashiro's prequel), but out of all that filth and tainted emotion shines the purity of Doumeki and Yashiro's relationship. Doumeki would literally do anything for Yashiro, and sincerely, truly accepts and APPRECIATES Yashiro for who is. The masochist, the "public toilet," the yakuza boss, and, most of all, the kind, broken person underneath all of that, who has suffered so much--all of the facets of Yashiro are precious to Doumeki. It's so touching it nearly moves me to tears, because isn't that what we all want? Someone who loves us unconditionally, despite all of our issues.

Yashiro himself has got to be one of my favorite manga characters ever. His dark humor and unexpected tenderness (especially toward Doumeki), the depth of his heart (
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
that scene where he begged on Kage's behalf
), despite all of the horrific crap that he's been through--that's real strength of character. He never whines, complains, or cowers, even though basically anyone else would in his place. Unlike 99.9% of all the main characters in yaoi, the reader actually feels like he deserves the unfailing devotion (and more!) he receives.

Doumeki's presence in Yashiro's life is also slowly changing Yashiro. The scene when Yashiro comes back to Doumeki in the movie theater--argh. I'm never sappy about yaoi, but I have to admit that my heart throbbed in my chest. Yashiro opens up to Doumeki in a way that he obviously has never been able to before, and it makes you truly hopeful that one day, he will be happy. For someone whose whole life revolves around pain and sex, to meet the one person who would rather kill himself than cause you pain, and with whom you can't use sex as a barrier or a They're made for each other.

I don't understand how people can say that this isn't a complex, psychological story. It is. It is incredibly touching, deep, and in my opinion, heartbreakingly sweet and tender, in an unexpected but profound way. I've never described a yaoi manga (or any manga at all) using that sort of language, but this one popped out of nowhere and smacked me hard in the face with its depth. I was truly moved by the relationship, and while I usually despise unrealistic happily ever after's, I find myself hoping that Yashiro and Doumeki get one.

A Lovely Romantic Story with Depth

If you disregard the yaoi content, you can really see a very dark, heartbreaking, and lovely romance. This manga also has a very original, beautiful plot. This is the first manga to literally move me with their illustrations. Combining the words and pictures together you can feel a clusters of mixed emotions. I practically cried every time i reread this story, maybe because this story felt so real.
The protagonist, Yashiro, is an interesting guy which we don't normally have as the main character. His sorrows and personality constantly stirred me. His poker face really drew my attention. I don't know if I envy his strong heart as his fights through each obstacle he faces, or pity his misfortune to be born into that kind of life. I guess this is why Domeki truly respects him.
I love the pairing between Domeki and Yashiro. They just look so cute together. Domeki's denseness and undying love is very adorable. I highly recommend this manga, as long you're a person who can disregard the yaoi content, if you find them disturbing.

A very strange manga but it gets you hooked. As in all yaois, everyone is basically gay (literally this time!), and although I wasn't expecting much from a yakuza, it blew my mind. Although it's easy to call Yashiro desperate or shameless, there's something deeper and complicated in him, and I love his genteel persona. Yashiro is the center of this manga, and I think that's why I'm giving it 9/10 (-1 for his sexiness, since really it does creep me out a little but I grow to understand it). I also subtracted 1 because of the whole thing with nearly everyone having a crappy, rape-filled past.

Yashiro is a super interesting character. You sometimes wonder how far corruption can go, and how it can appear, and Yashiro is literally the embodiment of that twisted side of human nature to its peak (being a gay nympho). I love mangas that get me feeling intensely, and I always find myself mixed between admiration or pity in regards to Yashiro (which I guess is Doumeki and Kageyama). I like how the "triangle/quadrilateral" love relationships are set up as well. It's ecstatic and very original.
