In 1995 Slam Dunk received the 40th Shogakukan Manga Award for shounen.
This is such an amazing manga! Worth reading all volumes. I'm not the type that reads very long mangas and stuff but this one was really worthy. The artwork is amazing too, I'm also reading Vagabond by Inoue Takehiko and is such a realistic, crude art. But all the characters in Slam Dunk are quite cheeky and charming. I became attached to all of them through the story.
The only disappointing fact is the ending which felt a bit cut short, but still emotionally connecting and done in the most realistic way possible
Slam Dunk was voted as the best manga of all time (GOAT) in Japan by over 70,000 people beating other classic mangas like DBZ, Sailor moon, Yu Yu hakashu etc Shohuku vs Sannoh still remains the best match ever portrayed in any manga/anime series EVER, That was high class high intensity stuff which is unmatched even till today
This is probably the best basketball anime/manga that will ever come out, even though ending was not the best, it written with a lot of realism. I recommend watching anime and reading this as anime has extras scenes and movies that cover some more depth of some of the characters, especially about Sakuragi. You can tell the mangaka really understood the game, all the rules and styles and incorporate it into this. You don't see basketball animes/mangas with fouls incorporated anymore. As I was reading on, I couldn't stop myself from cheering Sakuragi, just hoping he would do something crazy every episode or chapter. The stunts pulled in there kept me laughing and never once did I think this was boring.
Watched this in Cantonese when I was in Elementary school and now re-watching and reading the manga to finally find out about the nationals. One of the best sports anime/manga ever! There is no need for special moves or crazy abilities to make this good, just hard work and will power to never give up.
I created an account just so I can give a review on this masterpiece. It's an understatement to just say that slam dunk is the pinnacle of the sports genre, it's a classic and ranks right at the top even when compared to other genre.
Amazing art, amazing character development, amazing humour and story-telling at its best. The most magical thing about slam dunk is that you will come to love every single character, even from the rival schools. My favorite character in the entire series does even come from the main team.
Even after 14 years when I first read the series, my love for this series remains strong and I still take the books out to re-read once in a while. The ending was epic in it's own right. As much as I prayed and pestered inoue to make a sequel, I knew the ending couldn't have been more perfect. Inoue sensei knows it too, that there is no way he can make a sequel without risking slam dunk's legacy. The only wish I have is to at least finish the anime version right to the last chapter, damnit!
Truly an all time classic! The fact that it's the best ever selling manga per volume in Japan speaks volumes!
Although the ending was disappointing, it was still the most realistic ending...so I'm both happy and sad at the same time hahah
If I could, I'd give this manga a 100/10 definitely recommended. The art was kinda ehh and the beginning, but it definitely gets better (muuuuch better! )
Well i watched the anime and manga, and at the end of both i got a little upset , because there still things not ended yet, like what is gonna be sakuragi future as player, he was improving so well , i think a sequel should be made, cause it is a great manga but the ending is not that proper, i like the new manga that the autor made , but still would be nice Slam Dunk having a sequel.
I do not normally like sports manga. But Slam Dunk is simply incredible. The characters are likeable, and the games are exciting and easy to understand (this coming from someone who'd rather watch paint dry on a wall than watch a basketball match, real or fictional). It took a while to get used to the art style (I don't read older manga very often) but if the art is clear enough to communicate the complex actions involved in a basketball match, I think it must be good. Some people complain about the ending, but I'd rather have the manga end early at a time where the creator feels is appropriate than have it drag on and turn into a mess like Bleach and most other long series.
Art is top notch. Characters that are believable, likeable and can understand and get behind. Very funny. Good character-driven story. Tense and exciting confrontations in the basketball court. Perhaps I'm a tad let down by the ending, but not that much. If you like sports manga, funny manga or simply manga in general - read this. Inoue Takehiko is one of the best current mangakas.
For me this is simply why I read manga and what makes them so much better than american or any other comics . This is the 'Friends' version of manga haven't met one guy who has not loved it . Like all fans I hope for the day when Inoue san picks up the story again .
Slam Dunk is the best sports manga ever. There will never be another sports manga like this. If you are a manga reader this is a must read manga because it is a classic. For anyone that doesn't know, this manga help mainstream basketball in Japan.
Okay so when you start the manga, the story may be slow at first because hanamichi(main character) has to learn the basics, but he gets a lot better. The manga gives you so many emotions including sadness(you know what I'm talking about if you read the manga or when you do), joy, and happiness. Most mangas today that are long gradually starts getting boring and you want to skim them like Detective Conan, Naruto, Hajime no Ippo, etc... but this manga makes you want more.
Another amazing thing is the drama. During this one game in the manga, it was AMAZING literally. It gave me chills and my heart started beating faster; i couldn't keep still. If a manga does that to you than the manga is something. The game you want to know is in the spoiler box if you want to really know.

The Sannoh vs Shohoku match was simply amazing. During that game, it literal gave me chills and excitement to see what was going to happen after each chapter.
Overall I gave this manga a REAL 9.5/10 because of the ending. The author could have extended the manga but he didn't and I said REAL rating because I always see many people overrating mangas with 9s and 10s when they are not. Btw there are many people that aren't into basketball but still like this manga so give it a try if your not a sports person.
