I have read a lot of sport manga, but this is simply perfect to me. Stunning art, serious martial art mixed with right amount of humor. Recently I can hardly follow super long shonen series like One pieces or Naruto any more ( thanks God at least I finished Naruto -_- ), but I can still follow and enjoy this seried wholeheartedlly

I like this series as an accurate representation of martial arts in an exciting way, but my holdup with this series is that it trivializes rape. Rape is just a joke in this series and attempted rape happens somewhat casually a couple of times. The art, story, and action are all engrossing.

My Opinion

I agree about the ending being mediocre but I think that yasushi ended it that way since meo and ootsuki takeru will take on where the manga ended.
as for the sequel, I expected the sequel will end faster because of flow of the story for example Koshien Karate Tournament where you will earn the title shoukoushi if you win. Koushien Karate tournament It doesn't hold any impact unlike the tournaments of the KSKM.
This manga is Seinen. if they put this in shounen there will be a parents sending a letter of complaint since shounen manga focus audience is 7-18 years old and seinen is 20+. you can't read seinen manga if you don't know kanji but for shounen even if you don't know many kanji you can still read it because it has furigana(it's a reading aid for kanji)

same old a little better than the rest, i skipped to the end and im glad I did not waste my time trying to read 200+ chapters to be greeted by a mediocre ending. the sequel I expect to be just as average.

Friendly warning : with the pace of the translation releases it will take atleast 4 years for them to finish all 500 chapters.

Overall thoughts...

Just so people know, seinen and shonen mean the MAGAZINE it's in. They usually correspond to age of reader, but its magazine based..

The characters don't have much depth to them, but the fight scenes are realistic, if nothing else is. Art is good, nothing groundbreaking. People claim the feats here aren't realistic.. sources? As somebody who does martial arts, up to the current release, there is nothing shown that wasn't technically possible. Could a college student do it? Most likely not, but there aren't any superhuman feats..

Yes, petty things like "my martial art is best" exist completely. Source: Does martial arts in college. Everybody claims theirs is best. EVERYBODY.

fictional works and realism

mercio, Being a fictional piece of work is not a justification for lack of realism. That is, realism for the work's generally accepted rules, the way its universe works. What I am trying to say is that, the manga or any other media in question still has to make sense in its own world, whether it includes aliens, fruitcake elves or plain humans. Tolkien's Lotr for example has realism within its work because near everything has a reason and is explained, despite having fictional elements as its basis. Now about Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru , we have simple humans that perform stunts and deeds that are hardly believable and yet completely unexplained. I am not only referring to the martial arts stuff, I am also referring to the fact that if they had done half the things we see in the manga, in reality they would have ended up in jail, a psychiatric ward, or worse. But there is no explanation of how the society just deems it normal.
On the positive side the art is good.

I LoL at all these people saying they hate it because it's not "realistic". This is a manga! COMIC BOOK! If you want realistic go watch "real life" martial art match. The author can make the main character half alien half onion and shoot hobbit out of his nipple if he wants to. Don't complain about stupid things.

Nesfe summed it up perfectly. This series isn't seinen, the kids aren't college students, and the realistic quality that people talked about is a joke. Even with the classification of shounen, it's so poorly executed that I wouldn't recommend it to a friend (nor even speak it's name).

For those wondering how this series holds up in the later volumes...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
A small cast of new club members is slowly added: a homosexual wrestler that attempts to rape the main character multiple times, and the last remaining member of the 'ninja' club who gives background on future enemies. Enjoy

Not really "realistic"

This will be my first review ever, so please bear with it. The review has only some details from the first volume, not really spoilers. After i have read all the comments about the realism of this manga, I thought why not, I'll give it a try. A couple of chapters in and I'm already disappointed in it. People should have mentioned that it is only realistic in terms of techniques and martial arts (maybe) and not really realistic in terms of characters and story.

First, the main character starts out as a college student in a College . However not one character in the entire first volume seems to behave as a university student. All of the characters seem to be in the middle of puberty and high school. I don't know how to describe it well, but it just doesn't feel right the way everyone is acting. The setting might have worked in high school, but in college it really fails especially since they are supposedly martial artists (something like a 24 years old college judo club member picking a fight just seems wrong.) The main character didn't really help. when he sees karate practice he has this dreamy kid look and text bubbles writes "so cool" .

Second, apparently all martial artists or sports people are complete a**holes in this manga. In the first 2 volumes alone we have fights going by judo/karate/taekwondo/kendo and even gymnastics clubs. Now don't get me wrong, I started reading this manga expecting villain martial artists, but not in the stupid way it is presented here. The entire judo club fighting the college karate "kid" like some middle school delinquents. The "gymnastics" club bullying the main character, and my martial art is better than yours kid mentality, Sigh 。。。。。。
The biggest disappointment is that it is labeled Seinen when it has shonnen written all over the characters. From the i want to be strong main character to the nice girl/friend that cares about him.

There you have it, if you can get over the fact that the guys in the manga are supposedly 20+ years old martial artists with children's brains and delinquent behavior, then you might enjoy it. After all the art is good and just think of them as highschool kids and look at the manga as a shonnen. But for me who was looking for a senien realistic martial arts story, this is definitely is not it. I'll give it a 6 for being an average shonnen manga.
