Description
From Be Beautiful:

A lighthearted romantic comedy that lampoons the adult film business, the mainstream media, and the natural vanity of actors while exploring the earliest stages of a brand new relationship.

Includes the story Fuyu no Semi in vol.5:
It is the Bakamatsu and early Meiji Period. Akizuki Keiichirou and Kusaka Touma stand of opposite sides of the political scale of the time but still, something as fragile as the shell of a cicada binds these two men together in a tragic and cruel fate. A story of friendship, love and seperation as well as reunion and sacrifice.

Idk it's really great at first, the kind of great that would hook you up to read a 15-volume manga when you're only used to reading 1 or 2 volumes. But idk I felt like it gradually went downhill? Don't get me wrong, the problems were quite realistic. It's maybe how the problem was portrayed? Idk something like that. Overall, it's a great manga.

I like it

Love their relationship, and how both get to be on top and on bottom. That's pretty cool. The masculinity is mostly evenly distributed too, although there are some moments where the author tried to paint one of them as "the female."

I like how they have conflicts, but always resolve them. They are passionate about each other, and I really like how the two are willing to bend their pride for the other. That's necessary for a relationship to last. No one can always win.

However, things are a tad too dramatic, hence the deduction of 2 points.

The reason why it's good

Yes, this is a yaoi manga, and yes, there a butt-load of sex (see what I did there ^^), and cheesy romance. So some would think it's overrated, but that's probably not the reason why it's good. This yaoi delivers VERY good life lessons and speeches about how to love someone. It's not just some cheap cheesy stuff and bam, there's sex. The author talks about how the characters get through thick and thin and the journey of compromising and keeping their love ones safe and secure. There's also great dreams and life lessons to be taken away from this manga as well in watching their pursuit in becoming well known actors. So in this manga you can tell how wise and mindful the author's point of view is in life and love.

Really, it was a good read, just.... what the hell was up with the side stories inserted at random in the wrong time order?!? Like I get the concept of filler chapters but this was like, they're one year into relationship, random chapter about being 5 years into relationship, back to normal timeline. Or one chapter, shit loads of chapters, random insert of outcome of the one chapter from ages ago with no warning....
Also the 'ending' confuses me, very likely because I don't really get which one is the ending, literally on the site I read this there were three chapters tagged as (end) ??!? Each one of them quite alike to a small story arc conclusion and don't feel like "THE END"
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
At one point they discussed that they'd call each other by first name on their 25th anniversary, and I thought that would be the ending, them enjoying retirement and hugging while calling each other their first name on the 25th anniversary. But it's like the author just forgot about it and I find it quite weird that such characters that're so comfortable and understanding of each other never purposely call each other by first name! Granted, they may have at one point as I wasn't paying /that/ much attention but it was never specially mentioned for something that they'd agreed to wait 25 years to do....

I actually scanned the tags for the axed ending or ambiguous ending tags, none which are present....
Also, confusing scanslation, some groups did an amazing job and others just made me extremely confused as it made no sense. Some scans were also so grainy that it hurt my eyes. Nevertheless I thank the translators !

As for the art: one thing bugged me, the volume of the characters hair! It looked terribly flat and weirdly proportioned. But otherwise some of the expressions were done extremely well!

Characters: I liked all characters. the main ones were nice too! They weren't perfect, they had flaws and sometimes they overcame them and became more confident, some flaws stuck as well. I also really liked the balance they had between them, Katou never disrespected Iwaki and vice versa, they stood together independently. I enjoyed watching their characters grow and become better people with each other's help.

Plot: I like that it is long but it doesn't have that much of a main plot with a clear goal, fairly intesting events though.

Overall it was a pleasant read, but even though it's complete it feels like it hasn't completed anything, there are still unanswered questions and things that should be addressed but haven't ....

Amazing, Addicting, one of the best Yaoi mangas ever.

Okay for someone to call this manga overrated is ridiculous. I have read a lot of yaoi mangas, and I let me just say, Haru O Daite Ita is my favorite yaoi mangas, and just mangas in general. It has so much depth, character development, beautiful and unique art, amazing characters, an amazing development of their relationship.... everything that I would love in a manga. And of course, it is LONG! Long and well worth the read- every second of it (I've read this like... 3 times).

Iwaki and Katou are two people that have so many internal problems but they work through them together and the way their relationship developed is amazing together and individually. They truly love each other so much, and they handle their problems in such an adult matter- of course Katou can be immature but who isn't immature even as an adult? But the care and love he has for Iwaki is so beautiful, and you can't help but just want that for yourself.

But the character that I love the most is Iwaki- he has so much depth because he's so righteous but also just as anxious and confused as well. But the way he is able to bring in moral and wise words into their problems is just beautiful. He's such a great character that developed so much because of Katou, and vice versa.

Together they're just.... indescribable. They grow together from being porn actors to actors that are much more- ones that gain so much respect despite their background, and how do you not admire them for that? Winter Cicada absolutely broke my heart, but it was just so beautiful because the amount of passion and ambition they had into acting in it, and how much they were affected by it too.

People that complain it's about them fighting and having sex and then all over again- honestly what couples don't do that? At least for these two, they always learn so much about each other and they're surrounded by new plots and devices that make this manga so impossible to not read.

And the unique aspects of this- I love Nitta sense's art style. But she even put in controversial elements, including a crossdresser, and even showing the difficulties that come with that kind of relationship. The amount of thought put into this is just amazing.

Overall, I recommend this manga to anyone tired of reading one-shots or one-volume mangas, leaving you to crave more. After this, you WILL want to crave more. But it will also be enough to last you because of its depth and beauty. Pay attention as you read it- the face expressions, the words, the development throughout the whole thing. The ending just blows you away and in the end, you'll just look at these two as any couple struggling together and individually but they survive because of each other.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The scene where Katou holds onto Iwaki as they are falling over a bridge is just beautiful.... the way Katou says he'll not let go and you just know without each other, they would seriously die. So symbolic, intense, beautiful.

Anyways, please read! If the art throws you off, trust me the plot is enough to make you want to read and finish so please do!

Completely and utterly overrated

I don't get it...maybe i'm not reading this manga correctly, but this has got to be one of the most frustrating manga's that I've ever read in my life. How can you have 84 chapters on the same couple, b****ng and whining about the same bloody thing and then settling it with s*x, and then call it one of the best Yaoi mangas?

It was fine for the first 10 chapters, as a matter of fact I actually found the storyline kinda decent, and then it got to the 20th chapter, then the 30th, then the 40th and by the time it got to the 50th I was thought 'f**k this'. What am I going to gain by finishing this manga, I doubt some HUGE plot twist is going to appear...they'll probably just end up fighting and then having s*x -_- And by quickly scanning through all the chapters, that's all I could pretty much see.

The only thing that kept me going was the potential coupling of Miyazaki and Onozuka, but clearly that was all in my head (ironic to ship a non-canon Yaoi couple in a Yaoi manga). Although Miyazaki was a complete brat, I still saw some kind of potential in the couple, and if anything this probably would have distracted me from the fact that there is 84 chapters on the same couple.

Anyway, with that rant over (and i'm glad to get it out of my system) I still stick to the fact that this is an overrated manga, and I probably would have given this a 1, but for some reason I think that's probably too harsh...maybe its because i'm bitter about my couple not becoming canon xD

I love love love this series so much.
I think Haru wo Daite ita is the one who made me a yaoi fan girl
It has a lot of my 'thing' like younger uke, jealous and possesive lover, manly gay couple and hot smut too.
Although it's a bit old, but it's acceptable art, and slowly grow into my liking.

Sorry, English isn't my first language.
One thing: you won't waste your time reading this wink

Lovely art, lovely characters, and a lovely, slow, satisfying pace as the emotions of the main characters gets deeper and deeper.
The events of the story are comprehensible and nothing feels forced or rushed.
this story shows the progress of a realistic homosexual relationship between two straight guys, while they deal with their family and work related issues and help each other in overcoming their weaknesses and advancing in their life.
