Short and Sweet

Like many other manga, the main reason I like this one is surely because it's not interested in drama. It's unafraid to show people that would ordinarily be mean-spirited just because of their extremely good looks or abilities and show them as the good people they can nevertheless be. And the main female lead works off of the opposite of this: She feels that as an otherwise average person she should be perfectly gentle and nice to others, yet at times a little monster inside her comes out to induce her to spit venom about others.

Despite my many words the story really isn't all *that* deep. No. The characters are all pure inside despite whatever impressions they may give, and this is the story of the main couple getting past the surface and falling in love just by being with each other. And that's enough for me. Especially as the fast pace ensures the story never bogs down in anything uninteresting.

Instead, the focus is on showcasing both of the mains' perspectives and thoughts all the time, allowing the reader to really come to understand them and how they came to be together.

The main job of shojo manga is to deliver to young girls a fantasy of being truly loved by a young man. And since they are young enough for most of that to be still before most of them in their actual lives, that fictional man might as well be handsome and/or high status. It's more fun that way!

Since most girls are average-looking, making the girl main character average-looking is a good way of making the story draw the readers in. But to make that kind of pairing work, the creator of the story has to understand what kind of characteristics the inevitable "prince", who could have almost any girl, would be attracted to in an average-looking girl. In that, this mangaka has excelled in this manga.

That great insight makes for a very simple, story which is nevertheless memorable because it is fully believable. This manga is an unusual and delightful experience.

PS: It's funny too.

I know both have different stories but holy mother of bowls, Nanoha and her friends are like Tohru and her friends! Same feeling, and the princely guy is like Yuki....
What the heck.

Well anyway I quite enjoyed it. Haha.

The whole story was very good but the ending wasn't satisfying for me. It seemed like they just got started then it ended. They were suppose to be going out in the end but it felt more like they were still "more then friends/less then lovers". Still a decent read and it ended better then some other manga.

The beginning was very promising. The monster which preys on our thoughts. Seemed very interesting. But, only a few chapters actually focused on it, and it was only skin deep at that. After that shoujo cliches follow. But it is certainly better than many others. It's hilarity made my day biggrin

I didn't expect less from the mangaka of Kare Kano, it got the realistic theme of: the inner monster we all got inside, the problem dealing with them, and with the right friends beside us, accepting it, and learning from it. And the most interesting part, it shows both, the male and the female point of view.

A breath of fresh air!

This whole story had a really peaceful and carefree feel to it, but that's not the only thing I loved about it. At the outset, it seemed like this would be your usual school-based shoujo manga, with a prince who becomes interested in the plain girl who dislikes him - but I realized very quickly that everything has been very cleverly tweaked to create a fresh, sweet story.

The events are set into motion when Nanoha loses control of her temper (her "little monster") and tells off Hazuki for being a vain and self-absorbed prince, throwing him unceremoniously off his pedestal. But Hazuki, instead of being your average cold prince, actually turns out to be someone who was just a bit spoilt and uninterested in his surroundings. It's so refreshing how he reacts with gratefulness to Nanoha's verbal outburst rather than with anger, and Nanoha, in return, is guilt-tripped into roping in her contempt for him and accept his friendly overtures. Watching them go from that to genuine respect and admiration for each other's strong points was delightful, and I must admit it really is nice when you see a shoujo male lead who gets more flustered and embarrassed than the girl. The developments between them is perfectly paced, and Tsuda-sensei has avoided silly melodramatics, prefering to keep her characters honest. Even the stereotypical "jealous bullying girls" trope was averted; Nanoha is such a nice, cute girl that the group of bullies end up trying to defend her from what they thought was a suspicious mobster, haha!

Another thing that you'll notice fairly quickly is that the story occasionally switches between Nanoha and Hazuki's POVs - at one point, we even saw the same scenes from two slightly different ways. It can be confusing at first, particularly when you see two pages that are virtually the same (but with different narration and angles), but it's actually quite a clever way of helping readers get to know both leads equally. It's unusual in shoujo manga for readers to know very much about the male lead, and I really enjoyed this aspect.

Highly recommended!

i mean really! they were too cute for words! and im a sucker for he said-she strotytelling styles! gawd i love this! and i really like the style of the mangaka of Kare Kano except that in Kare Kano the drama was really deep so it didnt had the chance to be shallow.. but this one just felt refreshing and i like that the characters have a certain depth in them and they are not just there to be there. i really like the side characters too!!~! haha! i also like the fact that they gotto know each other first and its not love at first sight and all that cheese.. actually felt kindda realistic and they were all likeable but this is just too short! but that actually made it sweeter.. there were all sorts of tension especially on Prince's side but they only hugged in the end.. so cute!!!~! <3 >.<

A bit dissapointed...

I'd come across this manga a couple times before, usually because people were recommending it. When I finally read it I finished it feeling a little disappointed by the story, it was a sweet story but I was expecting something a little more developed and a bit deeper. As it is the story is just all right, but nothing wonderful.

Plot- It's simple and sweet, and everyone can relate. The premise is pretty much a girl trying to overcome her 'dark side' or 'monster' that is in her. Everyone has a darker side, and everyone struggles with it, the monster in the story was interesting enough and it was handle quite well, and made the manga interesting in its own way. It was not very deep however, only skimming the surface of emotions, the quick pacing did not help this and I soon felt as if things were jumping ahead to quickly and I lost the connection with the characters that had been initially there.

Characters- The two mains are undeniably cute, especially together. I admit that though the story was quite simple and in the end failed to really make any sort of impact on me, these characters were worth reading about! There just so cute! Their characterization goes quickly and while I could not get too attached to them I did enjoy their story and was at least engaged enough to read it all.

Art- Simplistic, but manages to capture the emotions needed to portray the story quite well.

Other- I enjoyed the story, but was let down by my expectations for it. The premise was good, however I wish it were longer and took more time to develop the emotions which were the main force behind the story. The emotions of the characters seemed to sway a bit from chapter to chapter, not to badly but enough that at times I was not quite understand the emotions and actions of the characters. All in all it was a cute read that was very quick and easy to read and is recommended as a nice story to read to pass time.

6/10 - Liked it
