I love Oscar. She is my idol. I would like to be as strong as her. You know life is not that easy and being able to be admitted to guys' world is a great achievement. I also love her character. As Andrea tells in the anime, "I love her because although she looks cold as ice on the outside, in the inside she is burning". Oscar is very passionate, she has a strong sense of justice, she can sacrifice herself for her beliefs and her beloved friends. She is very loyal, hardworking, decisive, smart. Maybe her only deficiency is not being able to accept her gender but thanks to Andrea, at the end she was finally able to understand herself. She was confused emotionally. It must be hard to be forced to live in the way your father dictated.

I cried a lot at the end of the manga but kind of loved the end. They made a movie of Lady Oscar and in the mıvie they changed the ending to a silly happy ending. That was just terribly disappointing. The mangaka stopped drawing manga after a while, and I could not find any other translated work of Ikeda Ryoko. If I could find them, I would really like to read them too.

...and unfortunately for the English-speaking audience, the scans are not up to there yet (the manga and the -even more awesome- anime are well known and have been succesfully and repeatedly published in European countries, like Italy and France, at least since the 80's ). Art is a bit old, with lot of sparkles and flowers, very old school shoujo in that department, so if you're not used to it it might be an obstacle to your enjoyment at first (I grew up with it, so I had no problems with the artwork, but I see how younger readers used to contemporary art styles might be put off by it) . In any case the art does improve along the way. But plot and characters are outstanding and really grow on you, especially Oscar and Andrè: the lady and the servant, the light and her unseparable 'shadow' and protector since their childhood together, both dealing with the changing French -and European- society as XVIII century Revolutions approach *_* .
It's a tale of self-discovery and revolution (on many levels), of everlasting love, duty and honour, feelings and justice versus status and class, hope and sacrifice. A tad melodramatic (well, it was both the era and the authoress' trademark style ) , but totally worth the read, and very moving, and quite well researched, despite some narrative license ^^V.
Furthermore it's a piece of culture and manga history and one of the most influential works as far as kickass heroines pursuing self-awareness and self-realization go, and of course the male characters are up to the challenge , both in attitude, ethics and looks . Ah, beauty and substance nicely rolled into a lavish period package, with some healthy feminist sprinkles. How wonderful , how refreshing compared to many of nowadays titles .
I fondly suggest you to watch the anime, complete English fansub of it are available on the net . I tried the Live-Evil one and it had also decent video quality, provided the source.

There's so much to recommend this manga. The art is really lovely, full of detailed Rococo architecture and clothing and the sparkly eyes 70s shoujo is famous for. The plot is interesting and the history is mostly correctly presented.

The only thing I have against this is how the historical figures are presented, seemingly classified as either "good" or "evil" to better suit the plot. Mme Du Barry is portrayed as "evil" for some reason, despite the fact that she was historically a good person and was injustly snubbed by Marie Antoinette. Antoinette herself is portrayed as a sweet, angelic girl who was only frivolous and snobbish because she loved beauty and wanted to protect the court from unfit people. I think more could have been done with those characterizations.

My favorite manga. While some of the history facts are simplified to appeal to mainstream readers, ROV has some of the best character development I've ever seen, and ably deals with themes of independence and freedom through both the Revolution and the show's wide and diverse cast. Oscar is the strongest person I know; she tackles gender issues and feminism in a way better than any other character in any medium ever has. The anime adds filler episodes and ultimately belittles Oscar's triumphs and struggle for emancipation as if romance was the only thing she was fighting for, but the manga fortunately rises above such prejudices and gives Oscar the full character development suited to her, so she fights for her country's independence, her own indepence, and her right to love despite her gender role on equal parts. The yuri is minimal, but it's there in Rosalie's devotion to Oscar and the playful flirtations of the court ladies. And to give any manga a low rating just because it doesn't contain yuri is too extreme anyways. Thus, I highly recommend ROV to anyone looking for an intelligent manga with strong, female characters, and whirling, epic plots. Remember, this is the series which saved my faith in manga, anime, and perhaps fiction in general.

I recently discovered the anime version which quickly became one of my all time favorites (such a shame this gem is so unknown in the US! Seriously, I would recommend it to anyone.) I quickly ordered the bunko edition of the manga as soon as I finished the anime. They just arrived today and I power skimmed them (reading those tiny bunko sized furigana is murder on the eyes, but I got through it with a magnifying glass for scenes with my boy Andre in them <3)

For the curious, I thought I'd slap together a little list of differences between the manga/anime that I noticed. This is not comprehensive, but hopefully it will be helpful - it's too long for this comment so I'll post it in the forum

This is a truly great manga, but in all honesty, I feel the anime does a better job of giving a serious, dramatic story with an even tone and building up the main love story from the beginning. So.... definitely read/watch them both and then decide
I also totally agree with the anime ditching Rosalie during the Black Knight arc. Having her in there during the manga, while it does do a good job of setting up her romance with Bernard, just takes the focus away from - which is a huge plot point. Rosalie in general... I don't know... I wanted to like her, but with two dynamic ladies like Oscar and Marie running the show, Rosalie's damsel in distress cry-baby plot lines just did not hold up.

I had this manga on hold/wish list for like two years. Back then, I didnt really like old art yet, nor was I a fan of crossdressers. But of course that changed (as I am now a genderbender historical old art freak), but it took me until yesterday to pick this up again and I must admit, it is as far yet one of the best mangas I read, and the best old art. There is no stupid shojo heroine, no female rival, no stupid plot. It's plain perfection. How they managed to fit in Oscar in the events of the Revolution, and how they showed the growth of the characters (spanning from about twenty years, right?). It also got rid of the stereotypical description of Marie Antoinette being a bit**. It actually showed how she was loved to how she was hated. It portrayed the perfect combination of politics, realism, history, and romance. Not to mention, there was barely a hint of shojo-ai. It was probably idolism and admiration, but no yuri or what. And bishies :"> ahhhh...not to mention, it's the guys who are in love and learn to give up, not some jealous ex girlfriend trying to sabotage things..And above all, Oscar has shown duty-over-emotions. Her loyalty, courage, everything, I'd have given everything to be Oscar herself.

The Rose of Versailles... A old, classic manga in which people love to exaggerate about. Something I noticed about manga is that when something is labeled an old school type of manga, people only want to say only good things about it. I'm probably the only person giving this manga a not so good review that isn't whining about lack of yuri (there is no yuri).
Personally, I don't dislike this manga but nor do I love it. It's in middle grounds with me, maybe it's because I haven't been able to read the complete series yet since the scanlations aren't done but even then I don't know if I can say things like, 'best manga', 'absolutely amazing', and all that.
History, like everyone said, is quite accurate and simplified which I agree. Characters? They're alright, sometimes they can be irritating but hey, it's a shoujo manga. I can appreciate Oscar's strong character as well as her sense of loyalty and justice, she's a good character but I just don't see enough of her in my point of view. I think the main reason I'm not very hyped up about this manga is because after hearing about how genius and utterly amazing this manga is, I started it with really high expectations (I mean why not? Heard great things about Glass Mask and it didn't let me down), but after reading chapter after chapter, volume after volume, waiting for that really big awesomeness of this manga to pop out and punch me out, I never got it. I sat there confused for a long time and attempted to re-read and I still didn't get that punch. Had I started it with lower standards I might have enjoyed it more but my expectations hadn't been met so I can't rave about how stunning this manga is. ): Yes, it was my mistake to think so highly about this manga before reading it but you can't blame me...
Now, now, I'm not saying this manga bad or anything, I would recommend it to people who are interested in it but my advice to people who are giving this a try, just forget about all the raving comments and reviews about this manga and read it with a fresh mind with no impression about how this manga is suppose to be.
Please don't kill me Rose of Versailles fans.

This manga is really good! I usually hate old style drawings, but reading this made me ignore the art. The storyline and plot is fantastic, and Oscar is really awesome! You can't deny the fact the Jeanne is really, really evil.
