There are mangas where the lead female is cool and it makes you feel energized while reading them because you really understand her and want her to do well. On the flipside, there are mangas (like Hot Gimmick, to use a classic example) that make you cringe because of the very bad gender politics--where you can just feel the women's rights movement being set back another 10 years with each new volume. And then there's Uwasa no Midori-kun!!... This manga wanted to be the former, but is actually the latter. Boy is it the latter.

Setting gender politics aside, it's just not a very good manga. Let me correct that: it's not a very good manga which insults the reader's intelligence at every turn. The main character in no way makes a convincing boy (she has huge boobs that she does not try to conceal), and worse still, she works in a coffee shop--as a girl--frequented by all her teammates. Does a skirt and a wig truly hide her identity that much? Is no one supposed to notice that she's completely feminine? And is no one supposed to noice that Midori and Tsukasa spend most of their time groping one another rather than playing soccer? When both of your team's top players disappear *in the middle of a game,* are we really expected to believe that neither coach, nor any of their teammates would come looking for them? Or that this kind of thing could happen repeatedly without anyone ever becoming suspicious? And finally, how are we expected to believe that this manga is actually a love triangle when the main character has sex with Tsukasa in the first chapter (and keeps having sex with him)?

Now back to the gender politics: this manga features one of the worst male leads ever. He has sex with Midori on a bet in the first chapter, telling her that he intends to marry her so it's OK. Turns out, it was all a lie and that he does this sort of thing to poor unsuspecting girls often. He even has a good laugh with his friends about it afterwards. Nice thing to do to your childhood friend. The revenge that Midori decides to take on him for this truly horrible offense never once gets off the ground because she instead spends the rest of the manga blushing over him and allowing him to seduce her. Add in some hint of a sad past for him, and the author expects us to forgive him since he's attractive. Even worse, Midori's soccer playing ability--the one truly stand-out feature about her--goes out the door whenever she's around him. She becomes a lousy player, but according to the manga, that's supposed to be a good thing because it shows her love for him. So, according to this manga: a male can do anything he wants to women, but a good woman should be expected to forgive him, to "stand by her man" under any circumstances, to put his needs before her own, and to allow herself to be lead around and treated like an infant whenever it suits him (i.e., when he wants sex). Furthermore, there's really no need for a woman to have talents of her own when her man has them; she should just be his cheerleader instead. Midori's soccer-playing abilities were only useful to land her Tsukasa; afterwards, there was no need for them. Also! No matter how rotten a guy is, if a woman is persistent enough, and loves him enough, he'll change for her! Only a bad woman would give up on him and choose a more healthy relationship (i.e. Kazuma). The fact that a manga like this is actually marketed towards 13 year old girls is socially irresponsible at best, and downright sickening at worst.

Meh... She had given up on defeating Tsukasa even before she said she would defeat him. And what the hell? This can barely be called gender bending. All she did was put on shorts and cut her hair. Her breasts are completely noticeable (not at all small either) and bouncing all over the place (no bra for some reason). I have no clue how anyone could possibly miss it. And walking around / sleeping naked... She's not one bit serious.
Incredibly weak.

Cute art, AWFUL AWFUL story

Rating: 3.0  / 10.0
Any points in the rating I give to this series is entirely for the art. The way the story is executed is AWFUL. It is one of the worst mangas I have ever seen that has the whole "Girl dresses up as guy" plot. It's true that the plot premise is very cute (i.e., girl dressing up as guy to get revenge on a guy), but there are MANY other series that execute this same kind of plot MUCH better.

The main character, Midori, is absolutely ridiculous. The whole driving force behind her seems to be revenge against this jerk, right? She doesn't seem to be going about it very well. She doesn't really do much, though she's supposed to get better at soccer than him, and every time they meet up, she always ends up just blushing and making out with him. It makes no sense. Not to mention the fact that she strings along the other guy that is really nice to her. And it's also kind of weird that everyone in the school fails to notice the humongous boobies she fails to bind when she's "dressing up as a guy."

I have briefly scrolled through this manga... first few chapters and it simply amazes me how nobody in the manga notices her(midori's) breast, which are really obvious, when she plays soccer and all. I mean seriously I love genderbender but she should have atleast done a good job at it and bind her boobs or something. Like mizuki in hanakimi who wore this special vest to hide them. It was like a major plot hole... so I stopped reading.

Reading this in the beginning and seeing the plot develop, i was really worried that she's end up with Tsukasa. In so many of these shojo stories the girl always chooses the douche bag over the great guy who actually likes her for who she is and doesn't treat her like crap. I read some of the other reviews and I couldn't believe that so many people wished she would end up with Tsukasa over Kazuma. It really makes you wonder what these people expect for themselves and what they may have to put up with on a day to day basis. Why would you ever accept and return the love of someone who treated like anything other than gold? Midori made the right choice, and if this story were real she'd probably be just as happy five years from now when the bloom of the relationship is over and he stops trying to 'win' her. No wonder the divorce rate is so high...

REJECTION OF ALL "FEMINIST" OBJECTIONS
Yup, everyone can come in with their own impressions. It's fine. However, the danger with literature is when it's banned, not when it's allowed - when one sort of perspective is deemed correct and another rejected. So I completely disagree with all opinion about how poor, young, 13-year old girls will be negatively influenced - it's their choice on what they want to read. Extension of such dangerous logic will have you banning every manga that includes smoking, violence, addictive internet games... in short, becoming an unbearable megalomaniac control-freak. (PS: for all feminists out there, you will realize this manga's actually saying females can kick balls better than males do. Read before reacting, please.)

IS IT REALLY ONLY MEANT FOR THE RUBBISH CHUTE?
It seems this series has especially bad press. (I ordered comments by Usefulness and found that the most useful comment rates this series as 1/10, and the others aren't far off.) I do agree with many valid points raised: the characters are a bit excessive (seriously, raping a girl just to win a bet?!) and Midori's disguise isn't something'll that'll hold to any normal observer's eyes. But in manga, reality's always twisted slightly, and while it might be disconcerting or even distasteful that everyone seems to not realize her true gender, do keep in mind that we readers have confirmation bias (I mean, duh, you've seen her as a girl and the mangaka tries to draw boobs in every time so of course you'd notice it), and that laws of physics are rarely obeyed in fiction. So it's fine.

WHAT WE SHOULD REALLY BE LOOKING AT
The important thing, I think, is artwork, characterization, and plot. Artwork's good and appealing - and this is really a question of taste, since if you have no stomach for chibi, you're better off elsewhere. While Tsukasa is quite unbelievable, I think Kazuma's turned out fine - the only criticism, really, is that he's rather too perfect - and Midori's less swoony than your average shoujo female lead, at least initially. The plot's premises are standard and decent, pretty much - revenge on a rival you have past enmity with is one of the more commonly used devices, but it works, and you should know if you've read Skip Beat!

All in all it's a fine manga and has potential to hit 8 if it limits the damage Tsukasa is dealing to its credibility, has Midori do some real character growth and lets Kazuma be a little bit selfish for once. A nice, satisfying ending can push it even further.

Unrealistic and not Gender bender

After reading some of the comments I'm glad a few other people agree with me and I'm not the only one feeling like this was a failure of a Gender Bender manga. It's so unrealistic. Her boobs are just like flapping around everywhere out in the open and she does almost nothing to hide that she's a girl besides cutting her hair. The main character wasnt serious enough about her goals and kept getting side tracked with Tsukasa. Still i kind of liked the relationship that was building up with her and Kazuma ( i liked him because he was actually a good person) but besides that everything else was kind of dumb. I thought this was suppose to be about revenge and awesome soccer skills that kick some jerk's ass? NOPE it doesn't seem like it! This is the kind of manga you feel like you waste time on and read just to read.

Art: 8
Story: 6

If you dont care about the details and common sense then go for it

I agree ENTIRELY with everything Ariel said...Kazuma had no real position to be the taker of Midori's heart in the end...there was no development in that area aside from naive indecisiveness on Midori's part...and Tsukasa's strong persona was TOTALLY wasted on her...out of all the manga's i've ever read (smut especially) I've never been so pissed off by an ending... It literally baffles me just thinking about it now... I can't express how I felt when the author decided to shoot us in the behind when she totally flipped around the interest of the ending... it was completely out of place and irrelevant to everything the story had been building up to at that point ...Tsukasa and Midori went through so much emotionally (and physically) and I felt like so much energy and emotion gained from that development went to a total waste.

The only reason I'm not giving it a one is because the artwork and storyline (Midori's character aside) was compelling enough to keep me captivated up until that horrible ending!!

Despite reading all of the good comments about this manga... ><

The plot is..unrealistic. The main character is naive, lacks in common sense, and is just..annoyingly stupid? The 'ecchi' part just..doesn't belong. It just makes the main character look dumber than she already is. Also, as a gender bender, why doesn't she bind her breasts? The male characters must have an eyesight of 3/20 or something to not see her chest.

...
Actually, if you dropped like 90% of the ecchi parts of the manga, it'd be tolerable. (Maybe. At least, I hope so.)

No, never mind. There's no saving this series.
