Description
Kurokami Medaka, a first year, is elected as Student Council President, and the first thing she does is establish a suggestion box, later dubbed by students the "Medaka Box." Medaka encourages students to submit any problem to the box without hesitation and promises to take on any issue from anyone.
Since Medaka won the Student Council elections with a staggering 98% of the vote, she ends up as the Council's only member. Now I'm not one for giving long drawn out explanations about why I liked something, so I'll just borrow someone else' that happens to fit.
"Medaka is a BATTLE SHOUNEN. No, not fucking hurr durr king of the ninjas, not a fucking rip off of Yu Yu Hakusho called Bleach (It's named that because when I watch it, I feel the need to drink Bleach), it's a real BATTLE SHOUNEN. ((Dusk: Unlike the guy I plagiarized this from I have nothing...not much against Bleach.))
Medaka Box is constantly examining the tropes of Battle Shounen manga, and making fun of them. It's asking these questions.
Can a character truly be perfect?
What are the implications?
How will real people react to this?
An example of this is Medaka herself. Here's a pro tip, you're not supposed to like her one bit. She's not just a Mary Sue, she's the god damned literal definition of Jesus. She lives for humanity sake, she loves everybody, especially her enemies, and she constantly fights to reform them into good guys.
Also she's invincible. Later on, an antagonist refuses to fight her because "If this was a weekly Shounen Jump, she would be the main character, and the villain never wins against the main character."
Medaka is special. By the age of 3 she could solve any problem on Earth. She can beat up the bad guys, she's always right, and she's got the biggest rack in the show. At one point, she wins a tug of war contest, while the entire opposing team consists of the rest of her school.
Now after processing all this information I could have condensed better if I wasn't so lazy, you either hate her or like her. If you like her, that's fine too. But if you hate her, you're missing the point. You won't ever like her. Once you realize you aren't supposed to, maybe you'll be able to enjoy the series.
Have you ever read a story in which you hated the villain? Or despised the little sniveling coward who always tried to cling to the main character's coat-tails? There's a difference between a badly written character and an intentionally unlikable character. And ironically, that's what Medaka is as the main character. The best side supporting character ever made.
Zenkichi is the one you are supposed to like, him and a bunch of other supporting characters, and then Kumawaga steps in and you hate how much you love him. Or maybe you love how much you hate him? Shiranui is incredibly mischievous and cute, while Kouki and Maguro are both bros respectively. All these people, who are weaker than Medaka, make the show what it is.
Now, if you took this plot serious, Niso trolled the living shit out of you. You should feel ashamed for being such a stupid fuck. Example, at one point 6 villains are introduced that are supposed to be super strong, but then they all get their asses kicked in one page by a newcomer to the set-piece. Forget the plot, that's not what matters in the least, and that's exactly why I didn't open up this review with the story section. It's all about the theme. Which is the whole, is there such a thing as perfection, and if so, what does this imply? Does always winning make you perfect? Does being beaten down, but constantly standing back up to fight make you perfect? Are you born with it? Can it be obtained? That's where the categories of normality, specials, abnormalities, minuses, and not equals come into play. Niso is playing a literary masterpiece on the grand scales, he's cranking the volume to a double forte, he's putting one foot on the gas, and one in the grave.
And then there's Kumagawa. YES. He is just the greatest character. Here's a little bit of his dialog.
"Even though I'm not cool, or strong, or just, or beautiful, or cute, or pretty, I want to beat the cool, strong, just, beautiful, cute, and pretty people.
Even though I wasn't blessed with talent, even though I'm stupid and have a bad personality, have bad grades, am misguided and am a good for nothing, I want to beat the talented, smart, likeable, overachieving people.
I want to beat those with friends when I can't have friends.
I want to beat the people who work hard when I can't work hard.
I want to beat the victorious people when I can't win.
I want to beat the happy people when I'm miserable.
Even if I'm hated, even if I'm despised, even if I'm useless, I want to prove that I'm better than the main characters!"
Even though this is a Shounen, each page is more text than fight. This isn't because of the normal, making a speech in the middle of a battle, cliché. This is because words get the theme across better than action.
Please be aware.
Chapters 1-12 is a mediocre/ok comedy.
Chapters 13-53 is an OK battle manga that sets up the next arc.
Chapters 54-93 is what gives this manga a 10.
And then up to 140 is a series of Arcs that play on what the previous chapters set up. Lot's of Meta elements."

My opinion of this manga seems to change every time I read it. Sometimes I really enjoy it and sometimes I hate it. I'm not going to rate it because I honestly don't know what to give it...
Let's make something clear: Nobody in this manga is even remotely normal. At first I thought that Medaka was the only weirdo but as the manga goes on sometimes I wonder if she's actually the most normal. I mean, she may be inhumanly perfect in every way but at least she reacts to things in a sensible way considering her abilities. Everyone else in the manga seems like a caricature.
The thing is, none of the problems they deal with in this series are actually exotic or extraordinary. They tackle normal issues that normal high school students might really encounter. But all the characters in this manga are all so exaggerated that they blow everything out of proportion until it seems extraordinary.
Case in point: The money-obsessed swim team. Sure, there are lot's of people in real life who are obsessed with money, but few of them are so jaded that they will proudly proclaim to anyone who might be listening that money is really the only thing that matters to them. But what I really can't get over is...if they are so obsessed with money why did they form a *swim* team? They don't appear to care about swimming at all. Why didn't they get jobs or start a business or something? It just doesn't make *sense* and the author never provides a good explanation.
It's all boke with no tsukkomi. Sometimes that can work but other times it just seems...surreal. Like watching some sort of weird play. It makes me wonder if this story is even set in Japan or if it's set in some alternate reality that just happens to bear some resemblence to Japan.
It doesn't help that there doesn't seem to be much in the way of story progression. The series is stuck in the same repeating pattern. And the current story arc (student council vs. enforcers) is the most surreal yet. I feel like I will drop it from my reading list soon if it doesn't go somewhere...
OK, enough with the negatives. There is a reason I have kept with it for this long: It actually can be quite funny at times. You just have to turn off the part of your brain that is worried about *why* the characters act the way that they do and go with the flow.
**Edit**: Well, that was unexpected. In my original comment I criticized this manga for (among other things) its lack of direction. I said the story didn't appear to be going anywhere...well, now it's going somewhere: straight to mediocracy. Seriously, this setup was never suitable for a shounen battle manga but that appears to be what they want to do with it. Blah, I have just lost any interest I had in this series...

This isn't quite bad, especially for a manga in Weekly Shonen Jump.
The artwork is simply good, with different characters for a change, a nice plot and some pacing in addition to some good scenes.
I really hope this has a fighting chance with the rest of the mangas serialized in WSJ. It'll be a shame if this manga gets cut so soon.

The manga starts rather good, great art, great characters, good and fun story.
It was something light and fun you could read whenever you felt like it.
And I don't know what happened, as many mentioned, the manga just... transformed itself. From a light comedy, it turned into a fighting manga. The main character somehow switched from one character to another, all side characters became useless (what was the character build up from the first chapters for anyway?).
The fighting is rather disapointing, the girl that was classy and cool is now a super sayien in fighting mode.
Well... I just lost interest. I would probably have read this manga till the end if they kept going as it was previously... But now... I'll probably just forget about it.

And I don't know what happened, as many mentioned, the manga just... transformed itself. From a light comedy, it turned into a fighting manga. The main character somehow switched from one character to another, all side characters became useless (what was the character build up from the first chapters for anyway?).
The fighting is rather disapointing, the girl that was classy and cool is now a super sayien in fighting mode.
Well... I just lost interest. I would probably have read this manga till the end if they kept going as it was previously... But now... I'll probably just forget about it.

The school suggestion box; an object that is commonly existent in manga and anime, as well as in the manga Medaka Box. Most of the time, such detail is barely important, which is also true here. Seeing as that is not important, let me throw that aside and explain what to expect from this manga. Simply put, be ready to flip the pages to a tedious, boring manga with extremely long and pointless explanations.
Zenkichi Hitoyoshi is a student at Hakoniwa Academy. At the start of the manga, Hitoyoshi vaguely introduces the character, Kurokami Medaka, the student council president of Hakoniwa Academy, as to what kind of being she is. Without a doubt, a complete monster. Such can be said for the majority of the characters in the manga, Medaka Box, as well. Apparently, this manga is an episodic manga, that eventually turns into an action manga. Sadly, I have not read up to such a point.
From the beginning of Medaka Box, the outer appearance of the manga is a story with decent jokes, only to be shrouded with horrendously long details beside that. I do not comprehend as to why the author of this manga has to stretch the length of the jokes at all. This basically ruins the joke. Putting comedy aside, you basically have an episodic manga. What else is there in this "story"? Well... I actually don't know.
The characters can be considered a good point in Medaka Box, as well as a bad point. In Medaka Box, characters are unique in a way, but the ability to display them is mediocre. In every character introduction, we are given a large amount of information about a single person. In a way, this is great, although, giving us useless information is not. Continuing it with a long summary of the character with 100 words spread over 2 or 3 pages, instead of the possible 40 in a half page or one page, is also not. My favorite part of the characters is somewhat of what I said before, the uniqueness of the characters. Shown as having superhuman abilities, nearly every recurring character is unique in a way. Although Medaka Box can be displayed as being a story with a majority of the characters being unrealistic, at this point, such is a spark of light.
Now then, the art. The art is wonderful. Well-drawn characters, as well as backgrounds and details in art is included in such. In the entire manga known as Medaka Box, this detail is the greatest. Going from regular facial expressions to abnormally unusual facial expressions, you can easily tell what a character is thinking.
What else is there to say? Well, on first impression, I disliked this manga. As of now? I still dislike it. I have never been a fan of Nisio Isin, and would not be surprised to hear opinions being biased of Medaka Box due to the extremely high reputation of his. I have read twelve chapters of this manga so far, and before someone tells me to "read up to chapter 92, then express your opinion," I would like to know something. Who in their right mind would read eleven volumes of a tedious and boring manga just to be able to call it "good"?

This series started off very interesting with the whole business of the "Suggestion Box" and Kurokawa trying to fix up everything. The individual short stories were quite amusing.
This however, was not going to keep a manga serialized for long, and this is probably why the author changed it into the more popular battle manga style - a total 180 flip that was quite unsettling at first.
Its still interesting now with the concept of the abnormals and creating the perfect human, but a battle manga is a battle manga. With the incessant fighting on one side, the plot itself isn't quite enough to make it perfect.
I will keep reading this to see how it unfolds, but the best part of this manga is still the beginning.

I really liked the start with the suggestion box and everything, the scenarios were always quite funny. But as soon as it started to get into the over-the-top battles it just got there and stayed there.
Hopefully it'll achieve a better comedy school life vs shounen battle ratio later on.

What is a friendship? What is effort? What is victory? Medaka Box is a must read manga wich questions Shounen Jump principles wich we are used to see, and for that alone it's a memorable series.
You don't have a male protagonist wich sucks and then gets stronger with training and his friends to fight the evil of the world by killing/beating his enemies, but you have a Monster/God/Overpowered woman that could just be alone and be fine that fights the evil of the world... literally. More than beating people and blaming them, Kurokami Medaka tries to reform everysingle person of the world, no matter what they did, no matter what they are, she will make them at least never do what they did again, and without hurting them permanently. Impossible? Too idealistic? Kurokami Medaka thinks the same... but it's still worth trying out.
Check out this impressive series where just beating someone isn't victory, where just training isn't enough, where friend/enemy labels are overrated, in a world where concepts define power, mixed with your usual brawling, but be careful... your mind might not be prepared for the twisting.

Check out this impressive series where just beating someone isn't victory, where just training isn't enough, where friend/enemy labels are overrated, in a world where concepts define power, mixed with your usual brawling, but be careful... your mind might not be prepared for the twisting.
After reading through the oneshot chapter, I could only think of Haruhi and how she directs Kyon in her daily whims. Medaka is basically a Haruhi that isn't a God, but is still strong-willed and irrational. Zenkichi also surprised me because I thought he would just be Medaka's weak, male counterpart that was somehow still important. It turns out that he is much more complex then that, and certainly not weak. A must read.
I liked the beginning with the introduction of the strange student council president and her conquest for the sake of others.

Since the appearance of the Uzen and his enforcer everything changed to more serious and fighting focused development.
At first, I didn't like the class 13 and flask-plan idea, it didn't fit with my expectations of the development. But I got even more fired up than in the beginning when she trained with her brother and is now fighting in the dungeon below the school. Now I want more of this. Medaka fight-oh!
