This story was well done and i really enjoy the art, but it's more suited for someone who has not read too many shoujo mangas....you know when you can say "oh shoujo typical"....or for those who will start off with this one. Otherwise you must really have time on your hands and not anything else that you are anxious to read. I particularly love this mangaka's almost every work so you will certainly enjoy it, in fact i think this is the most shoujouish of the bunch.

Spoiler!

SPOILER WARNING

I am a guy and I read shoujo also. I really really dislike this manga. I gave it a 5 instead of a 1 because i did not want to bring the average down too much. Since it seems other people really enjoy it. But this is one of my most hatest mangas. The reason i dislike it is the main characters. The main girl is completely in love with the main boy no matter how cold he is. And the main boy does not seem to show any signs of affection for the main girl through out the whole series. Yet in the end they end up together. Their is little to no character development in between the first and last volumes. It is like chapter 1 he is very cold to her. And than in the final chapter he loves her. The main flaw of this manga is the character development. This work has the same problem as her other work Kimi Shika Iranai. Which had a similiar deus ex machina, out of nowhere, lovely ending. Although I did like Minta Na Bakura. Yes I read all 8 volumes.

It's pretty good for an oldie

This was one of the first manga I ever read. I couldn't even remember the name of this until all these years later, when I was staring at Orange Marmalade, going, huh, that title sounds like something. When I was young, this seemed so good. I think I was thirteen or fourteen when I picked this up, haha. I cried a lot reading it because it's full of melodrama. I think you'd be hard pressed to take much of the plot seriously if you're more mature. I think I'd have trouble getting through it without taking what-the-heck-moment breaks if I were to read it again now.
Having said that, it's hard for me to give this a low rating, since it's an important part of what really got me into reading manga. I was a tween, okay. I definitely grew out of this type of manga, but it is pretty decent for such an old work. The style and story line were probably really good at the time it came out---though I wouldn't know, since I was 2 when it was published. It has its moments, though it is pretty typical of modern shoujo (characters and plot).

Cliche, but good

It's horribly illogical. Throw logic out the window. The two parent couples switching spouses starts the plot in motion. But get past that and the 'false incest' drama, and this manga is a fun read. It's got loads of cliche, but the majority of shoujo is cliche. And cliche makes stories work.

I don't understand how many reviews complain of MB being unrealistic or like a soap opera. In my eyes 99% of shoujo is guilty of the above. Fairytale world views and rollercoaster relationships are integral parts of the shoujo genre.

This manga does have cute art, and the story flows well. It also lacks cliches that I find annoying: falling in love with rapist, petty love rivals, flawless bishies (those princes who are cold, rich, perfect; but deep down inside they require healing), and clumsy heroines (can't seem to walk straight without knocking something over). There's also a lot of tennis playing.

Miki is annoyingly indecisive and angst does crop up in later volumes (oddly enough this near-the-ending angst approaches "realism", false incest aside...), and the plot drags eventually. But there's never a true "dark" moment. Cute and engaging- one of my definitions for good shoujo.

I found the story to be quite interesting and character driven. The artwork was magnificent. Wow, Miki is really cute. Though the character development could have been done better, it was quite enjoyable. I'd recommend this for romance fanatics. The last two (maybe three, don't quite recall) volumes really have you on edge.

Marmalade Boy is by far, one of my favorite series! This was one of the first series I read, and I fell in love with it! Although, I have to admit that when I looked at it once before I bought it, I thought it looked stupid. But, I tried it and couldn't wait for the next volume! The story is full of suspense and twists. Although. there were a couple of things I disliked.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Like, when Meiko gets with Nachan. He was too nerdy looking and the age difference was too large. Not right for her. (I wanted her to get with Satoshi Miwa. I thought he was a good fit.)
Also, I didn't think Ginta and Arimi were good together either. They were kind of haphazardly thrown together, but they're not a good couple.

Also, a plague of 90s manga is that they have rushed endings, Marmalade Boy included. It seemed that when everything was settled in the story, it ended a few pages later.

But, all in all, this series is very good! I recommend it to anyone who likes shoujo manga! Although, if you live in the U.S.A., you'll have a hard time finding it since it's out of print. I'd suggest checking a used bookstore, or ebay, or someplace that sells out of print manga.

Woo! I haven't written a review in a long time!
Anyways, I'm glad I remembered to finish this series, since my library didn't have the rest of the manga volumes. >>; I say it was WORTH the read. VERYVERYVERY worth it.

For me, the couples were really easy to figure out, but I think it's just me, since I read too much romance. >> Analyzing who gets with who is my specialty literally, anyways. Miki was a bit annoying when she didn't know who she wanted and when she acts stupid, but DON'T LET THAT GET TO YOU! She makes up for it soon afterward! I liked the development of this novel. ^___^ Lots of sweet moments, but even though there was pretty much only one devastating situation, that impacted the story and I'm sure other readers, SO MUCH.

Agreed? Agreed.

I'm glad that the mangaka went with the ending rather than her other one (she explains it in the bonus chapter at the end). For sure, if she went with the other ending, I would have had to write an ending for myself. That was a horrible alternative ending. -shudders- It's good that she realized it would have been an empty choice. ^_________^

It's a great/amazing/excellent/sweet/loving/heartbreaking manga. Sit down and read it. You'll fall in love. biggrin
