Love lessons

Hey girls, I've taken the liberty of condensing this manga into a single piece of advice for a healthy and loving relationship, so you can save yourself the trouble of reading this steaming 13-volume pile of dog excrement: always keep your lover on a tight leash. Remember, they are not your partner; they are a sub-human plaything. Never give them any power or the feeling that they are your equal. They should be constantly reminded that they are nothing more than one of your passing whims and their absence would have literally no impact on your life. If they--god forbid--start turning their head in another direction, be sure give them just enough attention that they come running back to you, ears perked and tail wagging.

+1 for the art.

Terrifyingly inaccurate portrayal of an abusive teen relationship
by ohkimch
September 2nd, 2017, 1:08am
Rating: 1.0  / 10.0
If this were a healthy S&M relationship, there would be rules, mutual understanding/consent before beginning, safewords, boundaries, etc. This is not, in fact, a S&M relationship, so there's even less excuse for the way he treats her, and the way she is expected to respond.

This is somehow supposed to be light shoujo, an example of a cute, young adult romance. And yet he treats her like a dog? She responds with 'doki-doki'? He refuses to confirm any feelings for her as a sign of 'manliness' while her self worth fractures under his ego??

He refuses to treat her decently, while she (and the readers) are supposed to believe anything he does that qualifies as decent is a sign of his love and affection. It's like Lite Abuse, with the way she is always hungrily consuming his heaping, damaging BS in exchange for tiny morsels of Decency.

The mangaka is constantly glossing over what this would do to a normal teenage girl's self worth and confidence. How a relationship like this would actually chip away at someone. How it could destroy someone.

The paper thin excuse of 'this is a cute shoujo' is contradicted by the darker undertones in their relationship, & does not function properly as a cheerful veneer for the pro-abuse material.

Just. No. Don't read this. Unless you're pairing it with Twilight and Fifty Shades as examples of abusive relationships targetted at (younger) female audiences. Smfh.

Let me just say...

..how much I truly, truly, truly love this manga to bits. It is cliche, yes, but somehow I can't get myself to hate it.
For one, Erika is too adorable for words. I just love her cute expressions and despite being a complete dunce for her beloved,(which is probably the only thing she is capable of,btw.)she is always just so positive in every situation. Kyouya, handsome on the other hand, is the biggest tsundere and a total ass no idiot would seriously put up with. (Unless you are an Erika, who would much rather stay an idiot to salvage a fake romance). Lots of cringe-worthy scenes and dialogues as well, so better be prepared.
Then again, this IS a shoujo manga. You remember you're not supposed to take this seriously,so expecting some realistic turn of events would be rather unrealistic for this genre as well. Not that I'm saying it's not possible at all.
Ookami just managed to execute these well, and that just did it for me. It's direct, no angst (thank god for that too.) funny and light-hearted.

And just in case you feel as if tearing your hair out of frustration because of their hopelessly 'cold' relationship, trust me, it gets way better in the later chapters.

I CAN'T...

OH GOD. I. JUST. CAN'T. I stopped at chapter eight. Maybe, I will continue someday but that someday is probably not in the near future. I initially tried it because the summary seemed interesting and the art was pretty nice-looking and the girl on the cover didn't seem like a dim-wit--turns out, she is MUCH MORE THAN A DIM-WIT. I CAN'T STAND READING THIS. IT IS LIKE RUNNING THROUGH WATER. SLOW AND DRAGGING YOU DOWN BY EVERY STEP. I am not entertained by this--almost not at all. Urgh. I don't get any joy out of reading this and I read manga for the feelings of happiness and engrossed state of mind I get out of reading well written works--this--THIS ISN'T IT. I feel bored and all I can do is hate on the main girl. I can't even remember what her name is anymore and I just read it. I hate her guts, her personality (or lack thereof), and don't even get me started about her logic, morals, and OHH GOD--HER FRIENDS (if you can even call them her friends). Her friends and her have almost close to no compatibility (save for their also lack of personality and fake-ness). I thought this kind of false friendship would be carried out like it was in Ao Haru Ride, where Futaba finds out that she doesn't need her fake friends and gets herself REAL HONEST TO GOD FRIENDS WHO CARE ABOUT HER. That's it, I have a lot more to say but I don't feel like spending so much time on this. Honestly.

Where to start...

I thought I might say something about this manga, so maybe people can try giving it a second thought.
I started reading this since it started and I just did it because I found amusing how the author took the clichés and made them in a refreshing way. I took it from the new perspective, not the annoying one, and that decision makes a difference I think. I just wanted to laugh. Then it started to get annoying for different reasons. I didn't get to understand
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
if he even really liked her or how he even came to like her

But as the story progresses, and even among the dumb actions the female lead takes, there was certainly development and at some point, I started to see an interesting idea, placed under all that. Having noticed that, I thought that even if the story was conducted in an idiotic way, it was actually a pretty good story. I think you have to be unprejudiced though, since there are so much bad stories out there, that some times we don't even want to get near one that can be among those. But i really despise stupid female leads, and I also hate jerk male leads, and also, that combination is specially annoying for me. But I don't think this female lead is stupid, even if she looks like it
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I actually think she has an amazing ability that makes her stand at the same level than kyouya in a really ironic way
and also, even if he is a jerk, I wouldn't say he is the kind of jerk he seems.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
how I see it, he sees in Erika what I said earlier, and some things show that more than being a jerk, he has a problem of character. And that is actually an interesting to see it... also, when you come to understand the story from his point of view, then you can see he liked her since way earlier than what you might have thought

I reread from the beginning and enjoyed it much more after that. I think this is a good manga. It's cute in an unexpectedly refreshing way, and is also serious in a way most people don't believe xD
if you hate stupidity in all its forms, don't read it, but if you think you can be understanding, then give it a shot and maybe you'll discover some sweet and nice characters here, hidden behind the comedy.

Ehh... annoying?

Typical shoujo. I admit at first, I rather liked it, because I thought the situation was amusing, but their relationship doesn't develop at all, I mean, at some point:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
you would think Kyouya would act like a normal boyfriend, but no, he can't stop treating Erika like a dog, and Erika accepts - likes it even.

As much as handsome Kyouya is, it is not a reason to date him, their relationship is so superficial it's annoying. Erika was kind of endearing at first, but since she accepts the way Kyouya is treating her... she has no self-respect and is just dull.
I don't know why shoujo mangakas keep making stupid main protagonist, ending up with some jerk. They may be handsome and smart but why would you keep dating a guy who treats you like s**t? I wouldn't!

Also, just finished reading Ch23 and this part:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
"If I were to be a Gorilla Man, you wouldn't even look my way, right?" just proved the superficiality of their relationship. Erika only likes him for his looks.

So yes, I'm disappointed with this shoujo, since I generally like the series from Betsuma, this series actually would have suited Sho-comi better imo :c

Perfect for the masochist in me.

I personally like stories like this, where:

- Main (gorgeous) protagonist is cold, selfish, insensitive.
- He's all mean to the girl/guy in love with him.
- Veeeerrrry slowly comes to realize that he actually likes having that girl/guy around.
- is occasionally nice to guy/girl, but behaviour mostly follows the pattern of mean-mean-horrible-realizeshesgonetoofar-nice-mean.
- and this repeats.

This type of story makes my heart hurt, but I happen to enjoy that particular feeling once in a while. Not to everyone's taste.

I agree with other people that the female lead is annoying. She is superficial and only has the goal of. obtaining a boyfriend on her mind. Yes, she does get better but she's just so clingy and desperate and insecure uhhh. It's like the only purpose in her life is to please her boyfriend. He eventually does have some pretty good tsundere moments as @circusLad said, but it really takes a while. I really prefer San-chan to Erika-chan. I would still recommend if you like shoujo because it's still pretty good.
Update: Erika is still proving herself to be pretty useless.

If I'm being honest, I only started this manga because the guy was blonde. Of course judging a book by it's cover is never a good thing. What I got from this manga was the regular "he's a jerk but it's okay because he secretly loves her" Despite huge signs that the two leads had a somewhat abusive relationship going on, I still continued because I thought it might've gotten better. Well I was half right. The male lead becomes just a regular tsundere (I'm a sucker for male tsunderes) and wasn't as "Abusive" as in earlier chapters IMO. But the girl... well.. she seemed to have gotten more clingier and just plain annoying. I dropped this at 30ish but I can't deny saying I enjoyed some chapters quite a lot.

TL;DR Guy gets better, girl gets more annoying. Don't understand how it has enough material even though
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
they started dating in Ch.12 and have much more chapters after that. I guess hooray for couple development!

Not for the feminist or "strong female lead" reader...

In my opinion, the male lead is a total bishie... but only look-wise. His personality is overly cold and anti-social. Normally I really like those cliche male leads that are pretty and stand-offish, but this crosses a line. The way he treats the female lead is, at times, ridiculous. A couple of times throughout the story you may find yourself wishing that one of the other characters would just smack him.
That being said, this manga is definitely not for any readers looking for a physically strong, smart, female lead. Also, she may be emotionally strong... but it's to the point of masochism.
