Description
Sakura-Gari is a Taishou-era romance story, ten years in the making. It centers on 16-year-old Tagami Masataka as he is aiming to find his place in life. While attempting to start prep school as a rounin, he encounters Saiki Souma, the son of a distinguished noble of the Saiki Koushyaku family, and becomes part of the Saiki household.

It seems as though this will be the story of Tagami's life, taking us through both him growing up physically and emotionally.

The best of yuu Watase so far

I used to like Yuu Watase's shoujo, but they got worst and worst, and completely cliched. I personally don't like yaoi, but the story and the art are just great. I'm really caught up with is story! I want more!

I LOVE SAKURA GARI

ok at first you get the impression that the "uke", Masa isn't cute because of his haircut. But later on he's really adorable. He's pure and sweet and innocent and his hair gets longer and he has these adorable expressions. He looks cutee later on. Also irl he'd probably be gorgeous.

anyway the art shouldn't matter. The plot is really touching and original. And also if your homophobic you should OBVIOUSLY NOT READ THIS. i mean like some people KNOW its yaoi. there's 2 guys on the cover and its a romance story. hmmm...

well i think its a good story. read! read! read!

Yay, rape?

Clearly, I am in the minority here, but I don't find this manga terribly deep or original at all. First, the plot is very similar to Mizukami Shin's Aigan Shounen, combined with Kunieda Saika's Bannin. Second, rapists are not attractive, no matter how beautiful they are and how sad of a past they have. Finally, there is very little real drama, only melodrama. All the sob stories feel cliche. This is made worse by the fact that the manga apparently takes itself very seriously. At this point, all I can do is cross my fingers for an interesting, non-absurd ending.

I must admit, I was a bit skeptical of picking this one up. It was on my "wish list" for practically forever. And when I finally got around to reading the first chapter, I found it quite distasteful (shoujo mangaka + yaoi? I don't think so...) - so I dropped it. Now, after giving this story a second chance, I cannot express just how much I regret doing that.

Sakura Gari by Yuu Watase is BY FAR, the BEST yaoi I have ever read.
Who would ever have thought that the average shoujo mangaka can conjure such an incredible and touching story? Impressive.
This is also, sadly, one of the FEW times when I read a yaoi for the PLOT. I'm not even joking.
I literally read all 6 chapters in one sitting. And am still starving for more.

BTW did I mention the DRAMA in this manga? Oh, don't even get me started.. Reading this makes me ever so teary-eyed.

So, if you like yaoi with lots of angst and drama, I highly recommend giving Sakura Gari a shot.

No, seriously, do yourself a favour and read it. smile

Normally, I tend to avoid anything by WATASE Yuu since most of her shoujo tend to follow the same formula. But wow... just wow... Sakura Gari is completely different; a much darker and richer story with interesting characters. This is definitely my favourite out of all her work, and definitely worth the read. biggrin

I feel like reading another shoujo

I dislike Yuu Watase's works and read this just because it's her first yaoi. It's really good, but a little boring, and too timid comparing to my taste. I hate how they are hesitating! It's alright if they hug, kiss and separate and die, but constant angst with raping without mutual understanding really tests my nerve. That's too typical of Watase, she's a shoujo artist after all.
Another problem: If she managed to draw such a beautiful man as the seme, while the uke's so short and looks (stupidly) manly?

It's good!

Well, who would've thought that Watase-sensei's actually made a yaoi! To be honest my eyes sort of blinked twice to make sure when I saw the manga's genre... I'm a bit surprised there... But anyway, at the moment for me the story is really dark, sad, but it's also beautiful at the same time, quite different from the usual work she has made so far!

About the unattractive uke and amazingly beautiful seme sort of reminds me of beauty and the beast, which is to me probably one of the reason why I think this manga is beautiful.

It's really good to read something like this once in awhile, not the usual happy lovey-dovey thing with sad ending, or maybe the main female character who sadly needed to be saved by her knight almost the whole story... I'm expecting the next volume! Hope it'll turn out good just as the start of the story!

I can't believe she is drawing yaoi now. I knew it was going to happen sooner or later since some of her previous works included hints or even not only hints of shonen-ai.
I will give this manga a try since i don't mind yaoi.

A very promising story

It's one of rare manga that offer equal amounts of rounded characters, pace, thought-provoking dialogue, psychological thriller, mystery, horror (creepiness, rather), and slow-but-steady character development. And do it well.

I don't believe typical fans of shoujo and yaoi would enjoy this. It doesn't offer the usual fare. Namely, fast-paced smex for yaoi or romantic comedy or drama for shoujo.

It's best for people who enjoy the "American Gothic" type of stories (a wealthy but dysfunctional family struggles against human emotions of all kinds during a national economic depression). Tennessee Williams would love this manga!

It's a historical psychological tale about the dark side of the human nature and it happens to have a "yaoi" element. Anyone who wants a good story will likely enjoy this. There are only two chapters so far (new chapters haven't been released yet), but worth reading. It's a manga worth anticipating too.

It's easy to see it's a difficult manga to translate, so kudos to the scanlation group for doing their best with this.

To tell you the truth: i didn't find it THAT great at all. Probably because of all of those positive comments I had expected something much better. It wasn't bad either. Just a little bit disappointing.
Characters were rather interesting, but I somehow I couldn't get myself to like them. Moreover, ending seemed a bit... pointless? The art was really good, with correct anatomy and all, there's nothing bad I could say about it, except for the fact that it was somewhat "plain" and forgettable.
Aaaand~ I know it was yaoi manga, and I was prepared for that, but. It was a little bit too much. Really. I ended up skipping most of them.
All in all, it was a good read but I don't expect myself to remember I have ever read that. 6/10
