10/10 for the manga, and for the anime.. even the film works well. The anime is the only case of a successful adaptation from a manga that manages a decent and (to me anyway) satisfying ending by changing the storyline, even changing the way the world it is set in works. It sounds like it could never work, and pulls the rug out from under your feet in a massive way, but the way it is done is such a genius and mind-bending idea that even changing a few characters completely is forgivable. biggrin quality writing and drawing which gets better as time goes on. And a (sometimes quite harshly) realistic world, no simple good vs evil answers, and with details that wouldn't even occur to most mangaka. I love shouen fight-manga and get hooked on that stuff ridiculously easily, but this has a lot more respect for its readers' intelligence and makes most manga of this so-called genre look immature and silly.

It sounds like the manga is working its way up to a decent ending too. I would be very surprised if such a tightly-planned and paced story failed at the last minute..

My Opinion

Plot/Storyline: well, i can't say that the storyline of FMA is original because there are simply too many shounen manga out there for me to make such a claim. however, the good thing is that this series truly is gripping. it starts out rather light-heartedly with more focus on the comedy and fighting, but as the story progresses, emotions run high and there's more at stake for almost every character. you'll begin to witness more angst, blood, gore and death. furthermore, the plot becomes more twisted and complex, adding to the already enthralling story. you'll begin to wonder what happens next because so much can be revealed with just one turn of a page - and it'll hit you like a bomb. i'm certainly enjoying the way the story's going because it can only mean more action and excitement. it's wonderful, simply wonderful.

Characters: just like what you can expect out of a shounen manga, there's a wide array of characters and each one has a part to play in the progression of the story (some having a bigger role than others). fortunately, the ones in FMA are fun and interesting to read about because they have different personalities and different motives. one thing that i find fascinating about FMA is that i can never really trust a character because he/she might turn out to be play-acting (and doing such a splendid job at it). this aspect adds to the appeal and excitement that the manga carries. another thing that struck me is that FMA doesn't involve much (if not, none at all) "power-up" moments, which is great. you can witness the characters relying on the power already given to them and you can also expect a lot more teamwork (for the good guys and the naughty ones). our heroes (the Elric brothers) are quite amazing; they have a nice blend of goodness, strength, naivety and determination. Edward Elric definitely made me laugh out loud with his brashness and humour; i just adore him. he, along with the rest of the cast, will definitely grow on you and you'll begin to love and appreciate them as you read on.

Artwork: masterfully done. period.

Negatives: the romance between the main character and his mechanic. i've never been a fan of relationships in shounen manga because the reason i read one in the first place is to enjoy the fighting and storyline, not the love that blossoms. it's rather unnecessary and makes the main character appear even more emotionally weak through my eyes. they should save it for shoujo or Fanfiction. luckily, the relationship between Edward and Winry is only a side dish and i don't have to see much sappiness. but because it's still existent, i have to dock 1 point off the rating.

Conclusion: visually jaw-dropping, with an enticing storyline and bad-ass moves. Full Metal Alchemist is a spectacular series well-worth the read.

[Edit by mod, Warning: Possible spoilers]
when I started reading FMA it realy atractd me and I realy enjoyed readong it, but after a while, when it started becoming all dramatic and dark (the seven deadly sins, and people getting killed...)
I dropped reading it, because from a light-drama-comedy it became more tragic and dark..
I realy like good drama, but this is realy not something I expected from this particular manga...
(even though i tured to dislike this manga, by no means it desorves a "1" score, it's pretty nice)

one of my favorite manga even though the relation with the manga it is practically nonexisting. you can understand so many things that with the manga you couldn`t get. and also you can see more sides regarding the personality of the characters.

When I read the manga and watch the anime I hated it at first. I thought it was purely boring as heck. But I just started reading/watching it again this week and I gotta say: I love it! Ed is such a adorable little guy and Al is so nice. Can't wait to read up to the latest volume!!!

Masterpiece in its genre.

An amazing manga, that is so well planned and executed that it simply exceeds the shounen genre.
Do not be fooled by the anime, the story in the manga is so ridiculously better that I almost have to insist people don't watch it. Though it is a fairly good way of getting people into it.
At first glance it might not seem very spectacular, but it builds itself up so masterfully that the lack of flashy characters or special moves (sure, there are those... but in a more subtle way) shouldn't be a concern. This manga is very much content over style. Almost no traditional shounen clichés to be found in it either. Power-upping? Get outta here. Tournaments? Forget about it. Long tedious arcs with tons of fighting? Nope, nada, zip.

Simply put: read this. Now.
