Ups and downs

My third review of this series. It's basically your standard foodie/power hungry Isekai. Not bad. I don't feel isekai readers will care too much so long as the story is decent. It's all power fantasy and random episodic plots no matter which isekai you read. Yes, this guy is a monster, as the title says, but it doesn't deviate too much from the harem/power fantasy norms. Rou's troupe is somewhat related to his control abilities but they pretty much all genuinely respect him too.

One unique part is the family unit closest to Rou acts like an actual family. It's not just lovers giving hearts and kissing at random while sparkles and roses float around. No, they have actual discussions about family problems, whether they want kids, witty banter, etc. I've literally never seen that in any other isekai, so, major plus.

However, my review will still focus on a major issue with this novel adaptation.

It starts off faithful to the novel. Regardless of what you think of the novel's themes, in my book, a manga that veers off and does its own thing is problematic. And that's precisely what the Reincarnation: Monster manga adaptation does.

Let's just say what it is: Rou does a lot of rape stuff. Yeah, that doesn't happen in the novel. In the novel he is instead abhorred by the actions of the other goblins and does not partake. He does, however, admit this is the rule of this world and therefore he cannot interfere.

Those with power make the rules. At that point in the novel, he does not have power, so it makes complete sense. This is shown by the fact he never rapes nor allows rape in his troupe later in the novel (at least in the 600 odd chapters I read.) He stuck to his moral principles and I can respect that from both the character and author.

So, why does the manga do this? Who the hell knows. What I do know is the Mankaga must've gotten a smack upside the head, because, well, the manga is now once again faithful to the novel. So faithful in fact that it's reproducing small details that tended to be overlooked at the beginning of this serialization. So, if you can stomach or skip the early parts, then by chapter 50-60 the story is back on track and better than ever. For that I can still commend this work.

This manga is such a waste of art and context/concept.

At some moment in time you realize you're reading something similar to what an 8 year old child would write about becoming when he grows up. "I'm going to be the greatest baseball player, doctor, fireman/policeman and fire-breathing president of the country ever".

What is strange though is that this manga is most definitely not meant for children yet is so childish. I mean the MC is having orgies with the main female goblins together with the human women, who gladly sleep with him after the MC murdered all the men that accompanied them just a few days ago. Huh? (BTW, there is no explicit content it cuts short of that)

Like one of the translators early on who dropped it said: "This is chuuni sh!t".

Starts out decent but becomes bad fanfiction

I've read the novels and since this stays fairly close to those I'll give a similar review.

This story starts out alright but proceeds to try and rationalize a character so OP that within 9 months of being born he's become the most powerful being on the planet and has become so physically powerful the author claims simply moving him arms to examine himself after evolving causes typhoons that shatter stone walls around him. Until he "learns" the "right way" to move immediately afterwards so we can just ignore that part of how awesome he is.

He practices slavery and is loved for it.

He murders and eats everything around him if he has even the slightest justification for it.

He is a skilled warrior, smith, leather worker, seamstress, cook, strategist, leader and everything else you can think of.

He gets a harem of women who don't get jealous of each other because he creates tentacle orgies and has children that also grow into powerful and intelligent warriors within months unrealistically.

I can go on, and on, and on about how bad this story is. It's kind of entertaining to read if you literally do not think about ANYTHING but what is immediately happening and ignore any kind of logic or consistency I guess, but that's about all the good I can say about it.

He is basically a Black Hole Gary Stu and this story is a bad fanfiction of the escapist "born into another world" fantasy.

A "reincarnation" story but this time it a goblin, sounded different and nice at first but quickly became a "story" about wish-fulfillment and an overpowered MC. It's hard to say that it even has a story, it feels like youre just watching someone level grind and fill out their pokedex.

From bad to worse

ReMonster started out ok, it was a bit boring but it moved along at a decent pace and the development of the civilisation was interesting. The protagonist got rid of the goblin's rape camp and life generally improved for them. Then within literally three issues it descends into harem group sex and the main character capturing humanoids to turn into drugged up sex slaves to be raped. Apart from being generally repellent it comes entirely out of left field as the MC has spent a big chunk of time removing that system. Its also at this point you realise every issue is the same story but at a slightly higher power scale. Pity, it could have been good.

There's not much plot going on, the main character keeps repeating the same thing over and over again. There's not any character growth at all (it's just rinse and repeat) and I personally find the diary style of writting a bit tiresome.

The Story of A Bandit Leader
by Hexxus

Rating: 4.0  / 10.0
That's it. That is what the story is all about. It's about how the MC rapes, plunders, and eats his way to the top. It's starts decently though (I've been reading up to volume 3 before I gave up).
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The story starts as a typical reincarnation story. But not so typical is that he is reincarnated as a goblin. So the early story is how he train himself and his friends, how he uses his superior intelligence to fight superior enemies, and discover new skills. And then he become the leader of his people, and start building an army of mercenary. Now I don't have any problem with that, but I do have problem is rooting for a bad guy. Scratch that, EVIL guy. He would eat anything weaker than him (including humans of course) would imprison any female enemie (he eats all the male of course) and start drugging them before raping them. And minds you, he doesn't just attack his enemy, even if the opponent is not hostile, he would still attack them, because he want to eat them, or rape them.

So yeah, basically a story about a bandit leader. If you the kind of people who enjoy reading about strong people oppressing weak people and a lot of raping and sex, then yes this story is for you.

I'll make a thread on the forum, if you think I'm wrong then prove me wrong.

P.S. If you want to read further just google "re: monster wiki", they would have the story up to day. 400 or something.

Haven't read the novel, yet. But it's not like the manga is horrible. Imprisoning, robbing and etc is quite an orc'ish thing to do imo. And it's quite interesting, at which point did the protagonist lose his humanity? Furthermore it's been 20 chapters only, so idk what story or development some people here were expecting. It's kinda sad to see harem here though, but at least it's, again, quite the orc'ish thing to do. biggrin Hope this gets more interesting. Wint...khm.. War is coming.

A series with an interesting fantasy premise that went from being a potential favorite to the eventual trash. As with many light novels, the addition of an unrealistic, cringeworthy harem foreshadowed that Re:Monster wasn't long for this world. Sprinkle in a couple miraculous coincidences, a MC whose countless abilities make the world trivial around him, and the addition of drugging someone until they're begging for sex and you've got yourself a classic recipe for shit stew. In all honesty, Re:Monster is awful so do yourself a favor and find something decent to read.

FYI, Re:Monster's score is deceiving as it got most of it's 8-10s while only having a few chapters out. If you check the reviews, it quickly goes from a positive outlook on what this series could be to a long string of 1-5s.

good initial premise initially ruined by repetition and repulsive content

initially i was a big fan of the premise of this series. while not groundbreaking or thought-provoking whatsoever, it was interesting and fun.

however, having got 17 chapters in, my opinion has changed significantly for the worse. not only do i find the OP's later actions very distasteful and unpleasant (minor spoilers:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
forcible sex slavery, drugging & rape)
, the story itself has become quite stale and boring.

also the story itself has very repetitive and predictable now, every chapter now is essentially the same, either
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
A. find new creature -> eat it -> gain more OP powers; or B. meet new group of enemies -> defeat them -> make them (sex) slaves (with or without drugging them) -> rape them. rinse and repeat.

i initially considered this series to be mere wish-fulfillment but now have reconsidered that this is essentially the author's (rather disturbing) rape fantasy, in the form of a manga.
